Garland or Donna Riggs
About Garland or Donna Riggs
Garland was born and raised in this area with family history that goes back several generations. His great grand father started the first telephone company in St Francis County and owned the local newspaper from 1913-1937. His Grand Dad was a well respected man that contributed to the Annapolis Community for more than 50 years, which now is creating a walking park in his memory. Donna is from Boston, Massachusetts area where they met 20 plus years ago while working on the BIG DIG, which was at that time the largest construction site in the USA. In 1998, motivated by a more simple, slower life style and the desire to spend more time with his daughter, we moved from the Boston area to Roselle, Missouri.
Garland or Donna Riggs purchased this Cottage in 1998
Why Garland or Donna Riggs chose Fredericktown
We were in the area visiting family and on our way back to the airport we saw this piece of property was for sale and decided this would be perfect.

Cute little space
My kids really liked the extras that were left for them at check in. The frisbees, bubbles & marshmallows made their down time much more enjoyable
We enjoy making small surprises for our guest and friends if possible in this one bedroom cottage. Though with an open floor plan space tucked up against a pasture 10 miles outside of town the perfect size to enjoy the area..
The Mc Neills and guests seem to enjoy the local sites .
We hope to see them back in the Arcadia Valley area...there are wonderful pristine rivers to add to the adventure..along with state parks.
This quaint and cozy cottage was clean and comfortable. The owner found out we were there for a death in the family and was genuinely compassionate and sensitive. She hugged my wife in and way that sincerely said I am sorry about your loss and I want to help if I can. The location is quiet and only 15 mins to town where you can find anything you need. The owner was helpful from the beginning to the end and I have to say a beautiful person that treats others as royalty.
Quaint and Peaceful Cottage
I loved my stay at this beautiful cottage. I wish I could have spent more time there. The hosts left me goodies and made me feel very welcome. They were the most pleasant hosts I have encountered. I will be back.
Good place to stay for my weekend getaway
I booked this cottage for a weekend trip as my "base camp" for visiting the state parks in the area. Everything was as described. As a bonus upon my arrival, I had beer, fresh blueberries and half a watermelon in my fridge. This place is located directly off of Highway 72, so it takes only 10 to 25 minutes to reach Taum Sauk, Elephant Rocks or Johnson's Shut-ins. Additionally, Silver Mines Recreation area and Millstream Gardens Recreation area are nearby.
Donna and Garland were very welcoming and provided tips for worthwhile excursions. I had a very nice stay.
Fun For Four
My husband, myself, and another couple stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed our time. The owners were very pleasant, quiet, and hospitable. The house was situated on a great lot. There were minor issues with our stay, but the personal touches from the owner's made the stay much more enjoyable. We appreciated the location as well. The house was situated between many local attractions and we enjoyed the Arcadia Valley Mountain Music Festival. Thanks for the hospitality! We hope to see you all again in the upcoming years!
Outstanding Country Getaway!!
Owners were very friendly. Several personal touches made for an inviting stay. Great for kids or romantic getaway. Tranquil spot with a good vibe. Felt relaxed as soon as we settled in. Many state parks nearby and close enough to town if needed. Treated to a big bonfire and other nice surprises. Would definitely return for a visit.
Just north of Arcadia the town of Pilot Knob hosts a Civil War Museum on an actual Battle site with a spectacular reenactment of the Battle of Pilot Knob every 3 years. This years battle is Sept 27-28, the 150th anniversary. There are many conservation sites, parks and rivers including Elephant Rocks State Park, Johnson Shut-ins, Mill Stream Gardens, St Francis River, and the Black River just to name a few. There are antique shops, thrift stores and a must see, is The Plunder Palace.
You can also check out the Whistle Junction Museum, an old train station with a real caboose, Ursuline Academy, and so many others. If you are looking for sporting supplies, check out Arcadia Sporting Goods, they have over 1500 guns on display, Even if you are not looking for sporting goods, I recommend stopping by.
There are several small towns with 30-40 min drive with even more shops and attractions.
