There are two routes to drive to get to the 'edge of paradise' at Pacific Edge Eco Lodge. There is also the option of taking a national flight and flying into Quepos/ Manuel Antonio being only a half hour from Pacific Edge Eco Lodge, and having car rental agencies in Quepos as well as Budget at the airport.

The toll road to the pacific coast is now open, after 30 years of being in the making, as well as the road from Quepos to Dominical being paved...this cuts down the travel time from the international airport to Dominical to 3 hours or less.

Please ask your car rental agency if the toll road is open, (the yellow route #27) as there have been landslides, during the rainy season, and you may need to use the original route, (the pink route #3/#34).

FROM THE AIRPORT ….both the original Atenas/Orotina road #3 and the way to the Toll road, #27 are both the same, for the first bit.

By car, leaving Juan Santamaria International airport in San Jose the easiest route, avoiding going thru the city of San Jose, is to head west from the airport, toward Puntarenas. About 10 minutes away from the airport, the second overpass is what you want. There will be an exit sign for Grecia, Atenas, and Marriott Los Suenos. Take this exit, turn left and go over the overpass. You will follow the signs for Marriott and Jaco, (see the map below).

About 5 minutes you will have passed on your right a restaurant “Fiesta de Pollo”, then on your left a large restaurant “Fiesta de Maiz”, immediately after this restaurant you will see a sign on your right that says “intersection adelante” [which means intersection ahead], and a small sign blue, white and red that says BCR Turrucares with an arrow to the left, FOR THE TOLL ROAD #27….you will turn left here at this intersection, there will be a soccer field on the left and a blue house on the right, go down this road about 5 minutes, the toll road will appear overhead in front of you, the onramp is the turning to the left before the toll road (do not go under the toll road)..go up the ramp and circle to the right and get on the toll road to ‘caldera/jaco’ are now on the toll road.

Once on #27 there will be 2 toll booths, for a total of less than $2. Immediately after the 2nd toll booth there will be the exits for “Tarcoles - Jaco” take this exit. You are now on the coast road “costanera” #34 (see the map on our webpage) this will take you thru Herradura, Jaco, Playa Hermosa, Esterillos, Quepos / Manwell Antonio and then Dominical...

from the bridge over “Rio Baru” (where there is a police checkpoint), you continue 4 kilometers more to Km. marker #148, the turning is on the left, you will see our sign, a yellow painted rock with Cabinas Pacific Edge, there is also another sign there that is lite at night “Las Olas”. Put the car in 4 wheel drive and continue up the dirt road one km. past the houses on the right, we are the first gates on the left. You are now at Pacific Edge!!!

IF THE TOLL ROAD IS CLOSED…Follow the above directions, however after you pass ‘Fiesta de Maiz’ DO NOT TURN…keep straight going thru Atenas and the curvy mountain road with fantastic views, then coming to Orotina, and after Orotina this Hwy. #3 will merge with the toll road,[after the landslide area], you will have one toll booth, then immediately exit and follow the above directions from “Tarcoles-Jaco”.

THE SECOND ROUTE is thru San Jose, which is 35 minutes east of the airport; this is the tricky part as there are no signs. Ask your car rental agent for a map, to get thru San Jose. After getting thru San Jose you are heading toward Cartago, but you do not go thru Cartago. (See the below map). The road is 4 lanes wide with a pay station, after this you climb a steep hill, and as you start to go down, get in the right hand lane, there will be a monument and a sign for Cartago and San Isidro General..this is where you go to the right!!!, (to San Isidro de General), you will then pass a few gas stations, and start climbing, climbing, climbing. You are going thru Cerro de Muerte, this route tends to get very foggy in the afternoons, and rainy with hardly any visibility. This is why we recommend this road only in the morning, or go the coast route. After about 3 hours you will come down out of the mountains to the town of San Isidro. Turn Right at Mc Donald’s (yes, there are mc donald's here). Follow this road one hour and you will come to the ocean. This is Dominical, turn left and go 4 kilometers, to Km. #148, our turning is on the left and you will see our sign, a yellow painted rock, Cabinas Pacific Edge, there is also another sign there that is lite at night “Las Olas”. Put the car in 4 wheel drive and continue up the dirt road one km. past the houses on the right, we are the first gates on the left. You are now at Pacific Edge!!!

We highly recommend that you get a car, and a 4 wheel drive at that. We are not on the beaten path, but up a steep hill, 1 mile, and 3 miles south of Dominical. It is too far to walk. Having a car will give you the freedom to explore the beautiful beaches, and especially Ballena Marine Park about 15 minutes by car south of us, and to get out for dinner in the evenings. Taxis are costly, and not that many available. You will pay $15 approx. just to get from Dominical to Pacific Edge, one way. The beaches to the south will be $25 approx. and then getting a return Taxi will not be easy, there are none at the beaches, unless you pre-arrange a pick up time, good luck with this.

So, please do yourself a favor and get a car. We can organize a car delivered to Pacific Edge, or the airport at Palmar Sur, if you do not want to drive until you get here.

SURFING, SWIMMING, BEACH WALKING -Driving 5 - 20 minutes north or south of Pacific Edge, you will encounter at least a dozen beaches, some very isolated. Some with World Class Surf, such as Dominical, Dominicalito, Punta Dominical point break, and Playa Hermosa.

The Whales Tale, south of Pacific Edge near Uvita, is a rare tombolo, a geologic formation, where sand was deposited at the base of a rocky island over centuries of tides which connected the head to the coast, creating this 'whales tale'. This is the beginning of Ballena Marine National Park, the beaches south of here are all more protected with smaller waves from the reef and rocks offshore.

This is where the Humpback Whales migrate to have their babies from both the north and south hemisphere. A tour with Dolphin Tours is a must. They also provide boat tours to the Cano and Corcovado National Parks.

HIKING ~ BIRDING ~ ZIPLINE - Pacific Edge is fortunate to be only 10 minutes away from the world known private national wildlife reserve, HACIENDA BARU, consisting of 330 hectares, with several ecosystems, including mangrove swamps to primary rainforest. A safe haven for Monkeys, Sloths, Ocelots,Jaguarundis, Anteaters, Kinkajous,Tyras, over 220 Bird species, and the Olive Ridley and Hawkbill Turtles. Several tours are offered, at Hacienda Baru..canopy exploration, with platforms, and ziplines also rainforest experience walks, either with or without guide; there is also the butterfly and orchid gardens; if lucky you may see the turtle egg's hatching, and the turtles being released into the Pacific Ocean there.

KAYAKING - is another great adventure, both ocean or river and is the only way to see the caves between Ventanas Beach and Pinuelas Beach , a tour called 'caves and waves',

or also kayak the mangroves.

REPTILANDIA- is a great place to learn about our local snakes and meet a komodo dragon. Fridays is feeding day.

REPEL- the local waterfalls of Nauyaca and Diamante, you can also spend a night in a cave behind the waterfall, provided by 'Tree Of Life Tours'.

The best waterfall in all of Costa Rica, Nauyaca, is nearly in our backyard. Horseback trips with breakfast and lunch included is a 'must do'.

Bring home dinner ~ Dorado, Mahi Mahi, Tuna.

You can relax in one of two lookout towers 'miradors' at Pacific Edge and see toucans nearly nose to nose with you, 95 species have been spotted on our premise.

The swimming pool is also a nice refreshing place after a long day at the beach.

There is a very large information book in your cabin with all the tours and restaurants in the area listed for you. We gladly make any reservations for you.

Memorable and distinctly lovely

  • 5 of 5

My wife and i have traveled all over this great country and had yet to stay at this hilltop gem. The views were amazing. Clean and crisp yet jungle rustic. Susan and George are great hosts and the service was excellent. The drive to the top is worth the views and the 2 miradors which enhance views are over the top, literally.

We saw tucans, monkeys and even a wild boar (below) and of course, heard the congos from the far off deep jungle hillside.

The rooms, kitchens decks etc..all fantastic. only 4km from dominical and 10 KM from our favorite beach, playa hermosa, just to the south.

George, susan - thanks again. we wish you the best of luck and hope to be back soon. Pura vida!

This is an out of this world place anchored more in the realm of magic! The true eco-lodge Pacific Edge is nestled on a ridge with out of this world views of the Pacific and its coast line as well as of the exotic tropical forests and mountains. Here you truly feel part the magical Earth.

All cabins are impeccable with amazing ocean view balconies and with all the comforts to satisfy the most demanding eco-traveler. And just a few steps away from a delightful swimming pool where you can relax and enjoy a cold beer in the company of monkeys and toucans that never fail while you watch a stunning orange yellow sunset over the ocean.

George and Susan are awe-inspiring world sailor travelers that not only are great hosts but after a few visits I can call them mis buenos amigos.

Awesome place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our one week stay at Pacific Edge. From the gorgeous views, the relaxing hammocks, to the wildlife we saw every morning and evening, it all was great. Our hosts were great and happy to answer any questions we had. The owners were away for a few of the days and the couple that was looking after the place were helpful too. The cabins are more than you need. They were clean and comfy. We stayed in Cabin 2 for a few days and then moved to the bungalow. The bungalow was huge with lots of space and great balcony. The location of the hotel is good. Just a few minutes drive to the beach and restaurants close by with really good food. We went to a few different beaches that were nearby. Dominicalito Beach was a favorite spot of ours that wasnt busy and had calmer waves for floating around. I enjoyed cooling off in the pool and watching the sunsets. We spent a month in Costa Rica and this was our favorite area and place to stay. I will definitely come back!

Relaxing getaway!

  • 5 of 5

A friend and I spent 4 nights at Pacific Edge in mid-February. What an ideal place to relax after participating in a Habitat for Humanity Build in another part of Costa Rica. Susan and George were helpful and fun. Susan has compiled great guidebooks for each cabin that provides a wealth of information about local beaches, activities and restaurants. I love that she also supports and sells the crafts of local indigenous artisans. The cabins, located on a hillside and in the forest, were charming and comfortable -- with a hammock on the front porch and a table and chairs to eat outside. Fans in the cabins made sleeping comfortable. Loved the toucans and monkeys that passed through the property many early mornings and late afternoons. The pool was great and the ocean and forest view was spectacular. Three dogs - Burrito, Wilson, and Charlie - are on site. Great addition for a dog over like me. George and Susan have both led interesting lives and I delighted in their stories. I hope to return again to this hidden gem and recommend it highly if you want a restful retreat with some interesting activities. Dominical area is not overwhelmed by tourists and the nearby beaches were not crowded. Nearby activities included small boat trips to see Dolphins, turtles and sea caves, horseback rides to a spectacular waterfall, and hang gliding.

Perfect place to relax in the jungle

Totale Empfehlung!
