Set within a short distance to Yellowstone Park, 3 major world class ski resorts and blue ribbon fishing rivers, this home offers amenities you won't find anywhere else. The classic vernacular farmhouse is set against a backdrop of open fields and willows and water - home to abundant birdlife including Sandhill Cranes, Blue Herons, Bobolink, Canada Geese, ducks, pheasants, song and marsh birds. Rarely can you experience a private pond out the front door and unobstructed views of the many surrounding mountain ranges as well as close proximity to a desirable destination town.
This property has it all and will provide you with an experience of a lifetime.
Imagine yourself casting a line into the trout filled pond or sharing a beach fire under the moon's glow, sitting out back watching the sunrise or out front - the sunset over the mountains or enjoying the livestock in the front or side pastures. Cuddle up next to the warmth of the fire in the Tulikivi stove or cook up a delightful meal on the Wolf. Pick fresh vegetables from the kitchen garden. Gather the free range chicken eggs. Pack your cameras, your paints, your imagination and head to Montana. Learn what it's like to live in a place of such beauty. Learn from the wildlife still nesting and growing among willows and reeds. Walk the wetlands. Smell the fresh ions sweeping off the mountain tops. The Cottonwoods is the place for you to recharge and unwind - find yourself in a vibrant place. Rediscover imagination.
The home features wood and stone accents including a wood burning soapstone fireplace, a gas fireplace, gourmet kitchen, a large master suite with a private gas fireplace and a jetted tub overlooking the pond view, two other bedrooms and bathrooms to accommodate additional guests. Enjoy a cozy media room as well as ample dining area for the welcome meals after a full day of skiing or hiking or site seeing. The full wrap around covered porch provides another opportunity to enjoy each vista. A private sandy beach is the perfect spot to visit or play. Soak in the hot tub facing the Bridger Range.
The 1950's barn doubles as the summer studio for painting, drawing or just a great place to hang out on a hot afternoon with Rex the horse, the seven chickens, Tee and Thee the Turkeys and the four soon to be six Dexter cows. We are, with help from our borrowed angus bull, Biggee who stayed with us this last fall, starting a breed just for the climate and conditions here in the valley. They will be strong sturdy good mothered cows that can bear incredible offspring and keep them safe within the confines of our small farm. They only eat what we raise here at the farm - organically grown clover and native grasses. The hand picking weeds will continue on the south plot. Fencing continues. Painting the landscape begins….
Walk or jog or bicycle on the paths that cover the 40 acres which includes the two ponds and a waterway through the land. Hide in the ancient trees and discover the 'Secret Place' all on your own. Even a true Montana dump hides history buried here over years of farming. This treasure of a property is almost too close now to the town it helped create. Come here and remember how America was started. Farming life - especially organically - is unique to all others. If you have eyes to see open them here.
If you are lucky you will see the eagles soaring, the cranes nesting and the swans flying right above the house. If you wish, sleep in the teepee under the ancient Cottonwoods by the south pond - even an abandoned buggy rests there. This Spring we are trying to attract swans to naturally live here where they were indigenously. Words can't express how beautiful the sun rises in this valley. It will change you to stay here. Smell the clover fields burgeoning in summer.
... Taste some honey...
Privacy. This is not a party venue. It is a very exclusive offering. The Setting - 40 Acres with organically grown hay fields set against a backdrop of mountains, two ponds and live water. It's like stepping back in time to be here...
I don't even know where to start! We enjoyed every minute of our stay at Cottonwood Farm. It is just minutes from downtown Bozeman, so it's incredibly convenient, but it's a beautiful, authentic farmhouse that feels far away from everything. Sally is a gem and made us feel so welcome from the very first moment. We were traveling with two toddlers and were pleasantly surprised to see the house is very kid-friendly. The stairs are carpeted, the porch is level with the grass, etc….it was easy for them to navigate. There is even a stash of old-school kids' toys and VHS tapes! The fishing in the pond kept the guys busy all week, and the whole group enjoyed seeing the animals every day. Rex the horse and the white turkey seemed to be the favorites :) We would stay here again in a heartbeat if we head back to Bozeman. Perfection.
Cottonwood is a slice of heaven. The farmhouse, vistas, animals, pond, veggie garden, Sallie...every single ounce of it is filled with charm. We spent 10 days there as a family & our young children couldn't get enough. In fact, we barely left the premises. Every morning we'd go feed Rex the horse, visit Goldee the Rooster, the chickens & turkeys, & say moooo to the cows. During the days the kids would splash in the pond, chase the ducks, look for Rubee the dog, run in the grass & play with the beautiful vintage toy collection at the house. We went fishing in the pond & Daddy caught a huge brown trout (& released him), which our son was especially thrilled about. During the evenings we grilled food, sat on the porch & enjoyed the beautiful view & quietude. The kitchen had everything we needed to make a nice meal.
Sallie is an absolute gem. She genuinely cares about Cottonwood & your experience there. She was totally respectful of our privacy, visiting us from time to time to check in, oftentimes surprising us with something new. A trip highlight was when Rex the horse had a birthday & Sallie arranged a little party for us in the barn, complete with cupcakes & thoughtful party favors. The kids will never forget that! Since we've been home, they haven't stopped asking when we can go back to Montana, & insisted on sending the animals a care package, including apples for Rex.
We may not be going back to Montana in the near future, but our time at Cottonwood is forever ingrained in our hearts. Thank you, Sallie & The Cottonwood Clan! We miss you.
The Cottonwoods is an amazing property. Stunning inside and out. Spacious, high end, well appointed, pristine and beautiful. Sally is amazing. We only saw her upon request and she was gracious and hospitable. We loved the turkeys, roosters and hens, especially the turkey named Tee. Also, Rex the horse was a favorite. We weren't able to catch any fish on the pond, but enjoyed trying. Only 10 minutes from town, it is extremely quiet and extremely private. No surprises. The teepee was cool and the hot tub was fantastic. The kitchen is big and has all high end appliances. Everything is high end throughout the home, and in mint condition. Again, a super clean, well designed and well maintained home. You can tell that Sally is an artist as the home exhibits design talent with all of its art and artifacts. Uncluttered, airy and bright. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. I cannot say enough good things. We stayed a full week and found it relaxing, super convenient and fun. It is a very special place and its convenient locations made our entire trip a breeze. Thank you Sally! I highly recommend. We stayed with 6 people and had plenty of room. In terms of places to eat - the Cat Eye and the Western for breakfast. Blackbird for dinner and the Ale Works. Check out Stacey's Grill for an authentic burger and steak cowboy tavern. Hart ranch great for short horse ride. Cache Creek Outfitters is supreme for all day horse riding and fishing - ask for Mo and Elliot. Chico and Norris hot springs - awesome. Don't forget to hike. We loved Grotto Falls near the Hyalite reservoir and you plenty of bison on your way there as you cross Ted Turners bison estate. Montana Angler fine for fly fishing guides, but the guide quality really varies. Make sure you get a real fishing skiff with a local Montana born and raised guide.
We were amazed with the property and the house so nice, we never wanted to leave. The house was luxurious, tasteful and better than expected. The pond was great, but we did not catch fish despite four days of trying. Although it was very nice, I wished for more kitchen tools for cooking and a few more utensils. I'd also like a microwave option, although I understand the host not wanting one. All-in-all, our stay at the Cottonwood house was fabulous. Thank you. MH
My first impression was wow what a charming and peaceful place from the outside. The inside was amazing and the views were relaxing! We felt right at home and even forgot we weren't at home! We even discussed moving to Bozeman because the atmosphere was so inviting. Sally was awesome and a wonderful conversationalist. The place was clean and Sally gave wonderful suggestions of places to eat and visit. Google is a great tool to use to find other food places and interesting things to do and see around town! Thanks for sharing your home!!!
Where do I begin? First off, Sally is such a wonderful human-being. She is very passionate about sharing the beauty of nature at its best. She was very respectful of our privacy and made sure she was never invading our space during our stay. I think we might've invaded her space more because we wanted to learn so much about her property and the surrounding areas.
- My kids LOVED egg hunting. It taught my kids where eggs come from and they learned to appreciate it more.
- The farm does not smell like a farm. It didn't smell like anything, just nature!
- Feeding Rex the resident horse was fun for my kids. They loved getting up super early in the morning to make sure Rex gets his breakfast.
- My husband had a great time fishing the pond. He swears he's caught every kind of fish out of there.
- The gourmet kitchen is to die for! I love to cook and Sally had everything I needed in that kitchen. We stayed on the farm for most of our trip and so we cooked a lot.
- Imagine having a hot cup of fresh brewed coffee in the back yard/porch early in the morning with a cool breeze softly kissing your face. The air is so fresh!
- There was more than enough room for 7 people!
- Sally shared some fresh honey comb with us on our last day. That was very generous and kind of her.
- It's close to everything you would need; Target, Kohls, grocery stores, coffee shop, gas stations, and etc. ... you wouldn't know it though staying on the farm but it's literally only 5-10 miles away.
- You can't take a bad photo even if you have the most outdated camera ever.
- Sally's two dogs are extremely friendly. My son couldn't stop talking about Annie (and he's usually afraid of dogs)! On one of the days, we left for Yellowstone and he asked me if we could take Annie with us so she wouldn't get lonely on the farm. LOL
- You may develop sadness on your last day.
I love Sally's concept of preserving nature as much as she can and offering people an opportunity to experience that. My family and I live in a busy city and this experience has really grounded us and made us realize that we need to slow down and take time to appreciate what we have. I would definitely visit again!
Enjoy unparalleled availability and accessibility of a myriad of outdoor adventures as well as the many events featured in the local town. Yellowstone Park is 85 miles away as well as 3 major world class ski areas.
