Handy and Helen Keller. Handy is celebrated by an annual music festival in July and Keller also celebrated with a festival in June. The Tennessee River brings in many bass fisherman and boaters. We also have one of the few Frank Lloyd Wright homes as a museum in Florence.

We can help direct you with your itinerary and point you toward fun things to do while you are here. Our kitchen is stocked with some basics in the event you wake up and need a snack.

Great place to relax and enjoy the view!
We spent two nights to enjoy the sights around Muscle Shoals (of course the music studios) but our favorite was the Birthplace of Helen Keller. Great tour of her home and the story of her and Anne Sullivan. The house was extremely quiet and I enjoyed some book reading.

Lovely older home
This property is an older home on a fabulous lot. The home sits high on a bluff overlooking the Tennessee River. The view is spectacular! The home is an older home with good bones. The inside is a bit dated, but functional. The beds were comfortable. One bathroom is quite large, the second bath is smaller with a small shower. A larger person would struggle with using the shower. Overall, the home was comfortable and met our needs for the few days we were there. And the view cannot be beat!

Dated
I was unable to make the trip but my girlfriends had a few issues-the home was not ready for check-in, the dishwasher was full of hats (not a typo), the kitchen was dated and needed - utensils, glasses, etc. the beds we're comfortable and the memories will last them a lifetime!!

Relaxing river view
Great place. Highly recommend. Close to many places to visit and enjoy. But best part is the house is on top of a cliff overlooking the Tennessee river. I could sit there for days enjoying the view. Questions were answered swiftly by Clay. Highlight was spending time with Alice, the outside kitty. Thank you Clay for a wonderful place.

About the host

Hosted by Clay Mize

Host profile image
My roots run deep in the southern soil. My ancestors often found themselves in a fight. They were in the middle of the Revolution, at odds during the civil war and together again for WWI and II. Ty Cobb and Johnny Mize called my great-grandfather Uncle Billy.

My father was born in a log cabin. By age seven I understood the meaning of a long row to hoe. In Alabama, playing football is what you do if you want a girlfriend. I got more education than I knew what to do with, while my real education came after going to work.

In addition to the family farm, I worked as a furniture assembler, lifeguard, paper boy, waiter, cookie salesman, and oil field roustabout. Other names I held along the way are baby brother, friend, teammate, quarterback, Christian, entrepreneur, professor, talk-show host, landlord, writer, and coach. Some paid better than others. Now I do what I please and it pleases me to manage a couple B&B’s, coach tennis and write, though I still have a dream or two I am cogitating.

A few years ago, I turned away from the financial engine that had been good to me. We helped thousands and paid millions to families in need. I wasn’t fully aware of my desire to go in another direction, but I now understand I wanted a greater return on my time and energy. I could only find this by investing in children, building community and sharing important ideas. The remuneration is an other worldly form of compensation.

I am working on a new novel. If you read one of my books and don’t get an idea that is worth 100 times the cost of the book, I will send you a refund. Let me know at Claiborne.mize@gmail.com

Same goes if I speak to your organization.
