Why John McLarin chose Front Royal

Location, location, Location- Our cabin is the perfect home base for all your outdoor activities and adventures in the Shenandoah Valley. Our log cabin is secluded and built on a 100 foot cliff above the Shenandoah River with 35 acres of privacy. The Shenandoah River State Park and the Skyline Drive northern entrance are both only a ten minutes drive. The newly built Canopy Tours zip line was just open in the summer of 2014 which takes over 3 hour to complete. If you’re more interested in water activities; swimming, fishing or boating is all just a walk or 10 minute ride. There are three boating companies in the area which offer numerous options for floating down the river. Did someone say wine tasting? There are over 30 wineries within 30 minutes of our cabin with new ones opening every year. We hope you will choose our home base for a memorable getaway. The river can be accessed by walking, but does not have river access for launching boats due to the path to the river.

Great Cabin

  • 5 of 5

Cabin and property were great. It isn't quite as secluded as I imagined, there is another cabin about 250ft away, but that wasn't a problem. It has a beautiful view, even at night!

Beautiful view and secluded, forested property

  • 4 of 5

We would definitely recommend this cabin for a family get together that is convenient to Shenandoah N.P. The only thing that would have made the property more desirable is if the stained, light-colored carpeting was replaced with a different, more durable flooring material. For 6 people, the advertised maximum occupancy, the space would be a bit cramped.

Perfect getaway cabin

  • 5 of 5

This little piece of heaven was a great place for 5 guys that were looking to get away to a location with privacy and of course a spectacular view! The hiking near by was great and the cabin was well taken care of. If only we could have stayed longer

Peaceful, beautiful view, easy to get to

  • 4 of 5

Cliffside was a beautiful cabin with an amazing front porch where we could sit and enjoy the views and listen to the water. The access road was easy to navigate, and having stayed in a few cabins with steep parking, I really appreciated the flat parking area. The layout of the cabin was very nice, and the bed was very comfortable. The only reason I didn’t give 5 stars was because you need to make arrangements with a third party to get the key to open the gate in the driveway. I felt bad because due to my distance away and getting stuck in traffic I had to make Ms Bowers wait up for me that evening. She was very sweet and understanding, but I still felt bad about being unable to arrive at our agreed upon time frame.

Front Royal Area:

Front Royal, Warren County and the surrounding area are rich in history and natural beauty and offer many unique and varied year round recreational and leisure activities sure to satisfy our visitors. It is also known as the Canoe Capital of Virginia. thanks in part to the 39 miles of scenic waterways better known as the North and South forks of the Shenandoah River that meet just west of the town of Front Royal, and the main river that continues toward Clarke County, northward. The North and South forks of the river meet at Riverton, west of Front Royal, where it heads north to Clarke County, and ultimately, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, where it meets the Potomac River. In Warren County the river offers calm waters for a leisurely canoe ride and rapids ideal for kayaking. Boating, rafting and tubing also are popular.

The areas provides numerous opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors by canoeing, tubing, kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, zip lining, wine tasting, golf or visiting of the two wonderful National or State parks whose entrance are only 6 miles from our cabin.

Skyline Drive / Shenandoah National Park:

Skyline Drive and the Shenandoah National Park bring more visitors to Warren County than any other attraction. The park and drive extend 105 miles over mountain tops from Afton in the south to Front Royal in the north, and parallel a 95-mile portion of the Appalachian Trail. The park draws more than 2 million visitors a year; about 500,000 of them enter at the Front Royal entrance on US 340, about a quarter-mile south of the town.

The 195,000-acre park combines protected mountain land with trails and beautiful views. The park's trails, varying from short walks to 12-hour hikes, intersect with waterfalls, streams, old home sites and scenic vistas. Wildflowers, more than 205 species of birds, white-tailed deer and black bear abound.

Admission to the park is $10 per car and $5 for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists. An annual park pass is available for $20.

Shenandoah River State Park

This park is on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River and has more than 1,600 acres along 5.2 miles of shoreline. The park opened in June 1999. In addition to meandering river frontage, the park offers scenic views of Massanutten Mountain to the west and Shenandoah National Park to the east. A large riverside picnic area, picnic shelters, trails, river access and a car-top boat launch make this a popular destination for families, anglers and canoeists. Ten riverfront tent campsites, a campground with water and electric sites, cabins, camping cabins and a group campground are available. With more than 24 miles of trails and a new zipline, the park has plenty of options for hiking, biking, horseback riding and adventure.

Admission to the park is $4 per car for week days and $5 weekends. .

Virginia Canopy Tours

During the canopy tour, participants will enjoy stunning views of the Massanutten Mountains and the gorgeous hardwood forest of the Shenandoah Valley. Guests will learn the rich history of the Shenandoah Valley, native plant species, and the wild inhabitants who make the woods their home.

Participants will soar through the Shenandoah hardwood forest at speeds which can exceed 40 miles per hour and at heights reaching 90 feet above the forest floor - all while attached to two steel cables. The canopy tour finale is an adrenaline pumping 1,035’ zip down the face of the ridge to our rappel.

Allow approximately three hours for our canopy tour, which consists of: ground school, UTV trail ride, 8 zip lines, 1 sky bridge, 1 air stair bridge, 2 nature walks and a rappel.

All participants receive individual safety and braking training and are accompanied by two certified eco-trained guides. Participants are attached to our cables by lanyards whenever above the forest floor. All safety equipment is handled by our guides 100% of the time. Virginia Canopy Tours™ reserves the right to exclude anyone from participation.

Shenandoah River Activities:

There are three boating companies in the area which offer numerous options for floating down the river. The South Fork of the Shenandoah River is one of the nation's best for smallmouth and largemouth bass, rockbass, redbreast sunfish, bluegill, muskellunge and channel catfish. The North Fork, meanwhile, offers anglers smallmouth bass and redbreast sunfish, and the mainstream offers all species except muskellunge.

State residents age 16 and over are required to obtain a fishing license before fishing on inland waters. Nonresidents over age 12 need a license. All persons needing a license also need to purchase a National Forest stamp when fishing in waters within the boundary of the Washington and Jefferson National Forest, except on the North and South forks of the Shenandoah River. Licenses are sold at authorized agents located throughout the county, but not at the county clerk's office.
