About Julie Swallow

David and Marie Hazell lived in Russia for eight years working on Bible translation. In 1992, shortly after communist walls began to fall, they moved their family to the depths of Siberia where they assisted with printing the first Scripture portion in the Evenki language. David and Marie also served in Moscow, coordinating translation projects in 70 minority languages of the former Soviet Union. The family's move back to the United States in 2000 marked a new era in their support of international missions work as they now devote their time to starting businesses that promote the principles of the Kingdom of God including giving a majority of company profits to Bible translation and other worthy non-profit endeavors. Why Julie Swallow chose Newburg

Kabekona Hills Retreat Center was established to provide a peaceful place for retreats, and family reunions. The owner's grandfather had a dream of owning property that could provide weary Christian soldiers (pastors, missionaries, and Christian laymen) solitude on lakeside property where they could rest in the hand of the Eternal Creator. Purchasing property in Northern Minnesota on Lake Kabekona, grandfather Bratrud shared his find with many Lutheran preachers and his land became respectfully known by many as preacher's point. Now two generations later with seed money from the sale of the family cabin on Lake Kabekona, we desire to carry on grandfather's dream to establish a peaceful resting place and a place of celebration for those who serve God's Kingdom. Kabekona Hills Retreat Center is a place 'where one road ends and the adventure begins.' Come and rest in the hand of the Creator.

What a wonderful getaway

  • 5 of 5

I have been using VRBO for many years, but my experience staying at Kabekona was by far my best experience. Very seldom are your expectations met when renting a vacation home, here they were greatly exceeded.

The hosts could not have been any more accommodating ,or easier to work with. The pictures do not do justice to the size, or the beauty of the entire property.

We will definitely be planning another trip there in the near future.

Highly recommended

What a wonderful place. We really loved this place. Most of our time was spent in the lake, but there was so much more to do. It was pretty hot that week, so outside activity was limited, but there was lots to do inside. We had a wonderful reunion. Thank you for having such a great place.

Beautiful setting for our family reunion and eclipse watching adventure. The house is spacious enough for lots of people and well stocked with kitchen supplies and dishes. Our grandchildren asked if we could buy it and live there forever. (All 16 of us!)

Beautiful home, property, and friendly staff!

  • 5 of 5

Very friendly and accommodating staff. Our group enjoyed the convenience of having everyone together in such beautiful surroundings. Sunrise and sunsets on the lake are awesome. Catering was a special treat. We didn't have to worry about purchasing food, cooking or clean up. We are looking forward to our next stay.

This place was AMAZING and BEAUTIFUL!

  • 5 of 5

I cannot even begin to find all the words I need to express how wonderful our experience was. We had around 35 family members from the KC and Chicago area meet here for a family reunion. Prior to arriving, I had put together a supplemental list of outings off the property that families could do. DID NOT NEED it at all. The living spaces were perfect. LOVED the sunroom kitchen where we could ALL eat our evening meals together. We spent our days kayaking, canoeing, fishing, swimming (spring fed, very clear and clean lake), playing kickball and wiffle ball, relaxing in the hot tub, and hitting the bike trails. Plenty of space inside and out for group get togethers and for solo retreat as needed (my youngest took self time daily and read in the beautiful sunroom that overlooks the lake.) We also had the barn space and our families staying their loved it as well. On one day of rain, we gathered in the main level of the barn which is a small event space for games, laughing, and dancing. This place is our newfound paradise. The owner, Dave, was great to work with throughout the week and we were happy to have him share a meal and great conversation with us. Julie- the property manager- was amazing and was so kind and generous in working with me to make sure all of our needs were met and questions were answered. We are already planning our next reunion for 2019 here. Such great family memories were made!!!
