This cozy three-floor apartment is one of four units in the Historic 'Mule Barn', a Crested Butte landmark. Once used to house mules for use in mining operations, the Mule Barn was moved into Crested Butte in 1970, and made into unique and artistic apartments. This apartment is like a treehouse within a barn; it is a work of art, with beautiful woodworking, stonework, and a spiral staircase (hewn from a tree with a chainsaw). The apartment is rustic, simple, and very comfortable, but not a 'luxury' accommodation. This home sleeps six, with three bedrooms, a full bath, and a half bath. The first floor has two bedrooms, one with a full-sized bed and the other with two twin beds, and a shared full bath. The second floor is the main living area, with a living room with a wood stove, kitchen, dining area, high ceilings with sky lights, and a half bath. The third floor is a loft bedroom with a queen-sized bed. Access to this room requires ascending a ladder, and is not suitable for small children. This ladder can take some getting used to, but our mother had no trouble with it into her 80's. There is a yard with a deck and a balcony. Amenities include two mountain bikes, a charcoal grill, washer and dryer, wireless internet, HD TV, Apple TV, stereo system, a Clavinova piano, and lots of hummingbirds in summer. You can easily walk everywhere - to downtown in five minutes, to the grocery store in under 10 minutes, and to the bus stop in two minutes that takes you to the Mt. Crested Butte ski area (free bus every 20 minutes, every day). You can hike, bike, and cross-country ski from your front door. The town of Crested Butte has many excellent restaurants, shops, and boutiques. Just down the street is a park and recreational area, popular among kids and adults, with nice music in the summertime. At nearly 9,000 ft and at the end of the road, the town has a 'top of the World' feeling, surrounded by spectacular mountains covered with snow in winter and wildflowers in summer.
My wife and I live in Bozeman, MT. We love the outdoors, and come to Crested Butte whenever we can.
Bennett Link purchased this barn in 1995
Struck by the beauty of Crested Butte, our family began going to the area over 40 years ago. This home has been in our family for almost 20 years.
We bought this place because of the unique and creative woodworking and stonework, and its beautiful location.
We had a great week in August at the Mule Barn with another couple. Plenty of room for everyone with comfortable kitchen and living room. Centrally located within a short walk to Elk Avenue/Downtown. Will definitely be coming back!
This was such a great location in Crested Butte, a short walk to downtown. We had a truck with a trailer and the parking at the place has nice deep spaces, that worked out well. Inside was clean, the decor is definitely interesting, with hunting and barn themes. Cool loft bedroom.
I have been vacationing with my family every summer to Crested Butte since 2004 and the Mule Barn was absolutely great. Crested Butte is a really special place for me, and the Mule Barn truly captures the special vibe and uniqueness of CB. It is rustic, yet refined, and my wife and kids really thought is was awesome. The loft was a huge hit with my kids. I would highly recommend the mule barn to anyone who is looking for a comfortable, and rad place to stay in CB. Another huge bonus that I failed to mention is that the Mule Barn is a short walk to downtown CB and it's location couldn't be more perfect. Thanks!
We have stayed here the last two years for our ski trip to Crested Butte. What a fantastic spot. The Mule Barn is full of character and has everything you need for a weekend stay. It is within walking distance to the ski shuttle and all the downtown fun. Staying here will not disappoint.
We spent 3 nights here a few weekends ago and loved the place. Very unique layout and simple, easy walk to town and to ski shuttle. The picture of the horse in the bathroom on the main floor is so real it freaked us out on more than one occasion! I recommend going to the bathroom before going to bed if you sleep in the loft because climbing down in the dark to go to the bathroom proved to be quite the adventure.
My husband and 4 children stayed in the mule barn the week after Christmas. Our children thoroughly enjoyed the plethora of snow and outside lawn .. They were entertained for hours!
This place is honestly a GEM. It is so unique and rustic, we found new decor and secrets every night the whole week! I was cooking dinner in the kitchen and literally said "This is the homiest place we have ever stayed. I literally feel like this is MY home!" It was not stale or stagnant, but so well lived in, so WARM. My favorite part was that it was fully stocked-- tissue, toilet paper, paper towels, crock pot, baking sheets etc. Even salt, pepper, seasonings, olive oil, coffee -- the list goes on! It saved me a million headaches for things I had forgotten. Such a great experience. I don't have enough good things to say about our incredible experience.
My husband and I enjoyed the loft upstairs and put the kids in the downstairs bedrooms-- it was a bit chilly downstairs but the bathrooms have heaters and warm up in a jiffy!
Location was great, 10 mins from ski resort, but bus to the mountain picks up about a block away, we just chose to drive. Super close to town, just perfect!
I think it's safe to say we would not stay anywhere else in Crested Butte! Thank you Bennett! A+++
