Coolest Place We've Stayed

  • 5 of 5

This houseboat is amazing. It has all the comforts you could want (full kitchen, fast WiFi, heating, plumbing, etc.) while still being on the water!

The common area was surprisingly spacious, and the bedrooms were a bit smaller but more than enough room for three people (two sharing one bedroom, one in the other) with shelves for clothes. The kitchen is fully stocked, and there are added amenities like a speaker system, TV, candles, books, etc.

The shower is over the toilet, but there is a squeegee to use to mop up the water so the floor doesn't stay too wet.

The houseboat is in a lovely neighborhood with many great bars, shops, restaurants, and grocery stores, but is quiet at night and not full of tourists. It's about a 20 minute walk to the central downtown area and is close to trams and bike lanes.

Mario was very responsive in helping us set up the reservation, and his assistant Paulo was very nice to meet us at the boat when we arrived and see us off when we left. I would love to stay here again.

A Magical Sail on an Amsterdam Houseboat

  • 5 of 5

The three of us, a couple and myself, were excited about staying aboard a houseboat in Amsterdam. It did not disappoint. A quick ride on Tram #1 from the Central Station, brought us to the boat on a lovely canal. We were thrilled.

The concierge, Jorge, was there to meet us right on time. He was friendly and considerate as he showed us the boat's systems. It's well-appointed with virtually everything one could need. (It did not have a washer/dryer, but there's a laundromat five minutes away)

The two bedrooms are at either end of the boat with comfortable full-size beds which each sleep two. The shower bathroom is compact and nicely heated by a radiator. We'd turn it on early in the morning for a toasty shower later. The kitchen has everything one needs for cooking.

The main living room is comfortable with a sofa and large dining table. We spent much of our time there, occasionally watching the flat screen TV.

I loved waking in the night to the lights and low purr of a boat passing in the canal. The reflections of the water made beautiful rippling light on the ceiling. There was indeed a magical feeling to this boat.

Yes, this is a lovely, affordable property. Simple, comfortable, centrally located. There's a nice mix of shops and restaurants in the near vicinity.

If you are a party of 1-2-3 or 4 coming to Amsterdam, I highly recommend this boat. It will give your stay a special, memorable quality that even a four star hotel cannot provide.

Comfortable digs with great location

  • 4 of 5

No luxury but very comfortable for two couples and comes with a tranquil canal view. Great location just near enough to all the Amsterdam attractions without the noise and crowds. Very convenient to the Schiphol Airport Express ... two blocks away, 5€ and runs every 10 minutes. Really everything you need for a great Amsterdam stay.

Owner's Response: Hi Alan, thanks for your review. I am happy you guys had a nice time, but I can't really understand your comment that the house was too small for 3 people?!? Next to toilet/shower and kitchen, there are 2 double bedrooms and a large living room... I surely accept your critic, but I want you to know that looking at the avarage space in typical houseboats in Amsterdam, or even comparing to a standard apartments, I can tell that this is surely not small. I hade many groups of 4 people before and never had such a remark, so don't get me wrong, I appreciate your comment, but need to point this out for other people reading this thread to get an objective point of view.

A fascinating experience, a few suggestions

  • 3 of 5

During booking, Mario was very helpful; he was flexible in adjusting to our dates and times, and he responded quickly to our many questions. We were glad that he took the initative to send payment requests so that we didn't forget the deadlines. Since I'd mentioned looking forward to thanking him in person, he was there to greet us, after which his property manager provided a thorough orientation to the houseboat.

The houseboat was in a perfect location - close to the bustle of the city's sights, yet in a quiet residential area, with nearby shops, groceries, bakeries and restaurants. We enjoyed walking to Dam Square in one direction and to the Rijksmuseum in the other, rather than using the tram. Some advice: leave early to explore the city, as sidewalks become crowded at peak times.

Inside the houseboat, the living-dining room was roomy enough for the six of us to relax and plan our outings. For this, we all appreciated having good Wi-Fi access. The dining table easily sat six people, and we loved sitting there, looking out the big window and watching both ducks and canal boats pass by. We ate our main meals out, so the small kitchen and refrigerator met our needs. The two bedrooms both had enough space, comfortable beds, and open shelving units for storing clothing, etc. The bed in one room was a low platform-type bed common in Europe, requiring some agility in rising from lying to standing. This room lacked a door, limiting privacy. Finally, the bathroom was a style we hadn't experienced before. The shower didn't have its own enclosure. A shower curtain contained some of the water, but not all. Showering left the bathroom floor wet, and a squeegee was available for coaxing the water into the drain.

Suggested areas for improvement are: 1) The two people using the couch/sofa bed noted that it smelled strongly of cigarette smoke and was uncomfortable for sleeping. The property manager said plans to replace the couch are underway. 2) We couldn't open two windows to take maximum advantage of cross-breezes. 3) As we settled in, we noticed an extremely unpleasant smell in the bathroom. We called the property manager who came to investigate; when he left, the room had a more acceptable lemon scent. However, the unpleasant smell was again faintly evident by the end of our stay.

Staying on a houseboat on one of Amsterdam's famous canals was a fascinating experience. We hope our suggestions will make it even more so.

Owner's Response: Dear Diane and rest of the family, Thanks for your feedback and detailed suggestions. The sofa bed has been eventually replaced just a few days after you left. In any case I am not renting the houseboat to 6 people any longer, so that will just be a comfortable and new sofa. As for the shower, it is an old fashion one and I cannot change that really easily. And about the smell, I will investigate further, since we did not receive other feedback on this. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed your stay and I appreciate the suggestions. Thanks and greetings to your family, Mario

Great stay on a houseboat

  • 5 of 5

We had a terrific three-night stay on Mario's houseboat; we were two senior couples. Mario greeted us and got us set up with everything we needed. This was our first stop after flying from Canada, and was perfect for overcoming jet lag and exploring the city on foot.

We spent lots of time watching boaters go by in the canal, it was great fun watching the people in all their different kinds of watercraft.

Lots of great dining and drinking within a couple of blocks.

Thanks Mario for a great start to our vacation.
