Hilltop house in the heart of Tuscany with private pool

Bedrooms 2
Space 120 m²
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 6 - 7 nights

About the property

Stunning views, 2 double bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, sleeping 4-5

This 'home' in Tuscany is a carefully restored and enlarged farm building dating back to the 18th century. Its hilltop setting between olive groves and wheat fields, just 1.5km outside historic Montisi, gives it a unique 'away-from-it-all feeling'. Yet the hamlet's bakery, grocery shop, bar/tabac and restaurant are just a leisurely 15 min stroll away between cypresses and olive trees. Views are stunning, with the area around the private pool particularly good for enjoying sunsets.

This is not a 'develop to let' property, but a house that for seven years served as a 'home' when the owners were posted overseas and is now their holiday home.

It is arranged over three floors;

- The top floor comprises a double bed room with en suite bathroom

- The first floor mirrors the top floor, except that it is laid out as a twin bedroom, with en suite shower/bathroom

- The ground floor offers fantastic views over the rolling country side and includes a 25 X 12 ft living room with a well stocked library and fireplace, as well as a fully equipped kitchen with a beautiful breakfast terrace.

Just delightful

  • 5 of 5

The villa is beautifully located, sensitively converted and is ideal for rest and recuperation, with comfortable living spaces and a terrace in the shade of a large holm oak, ideal for long al fresco lunches. The pool is a good size and very welcome for cooling off and exercise. If you forget to bring a book, don't worry, there is a library to suit all tastes and moods. Montisi is unspoiled and pictureque and nearby San Giovanni d'Asso harbours an excellent restaurant, Il Castello - highly recommended. A bottle of Brunello is a must. The wine centres of Montalcino and Montepulciano are both nearby and are good to visit and the village used for filming 'The English Patient' is about 5km away. We will be recommending it to friends and hope to return ourselves one day.

Owner's Response: Seeing that others enjoy our home as much as we do is ample solace for not being able to spend more time in Montisi ourselves. As to the library, so many books, so little time........

Beautiful spot for a honeymoon!

  • 5 of 5

We spent one week at this beautiful, rustic villa. It maintained a luxurious yet informal vibe surrounded by olive groves and indoor home comforts (such as the vast library of books).

Rooms were fitted with comfortable beds, large showers and plenty of fans for the warm evenings. The pool was large and well maintained and there was even a table tennis table for additional entertainment.

We will definitely be back to have wonderful Italian food and wine whilst gazing over the rolling Tuscan hills. The pictures really do show what a wonderful property and location this is!

A Tuscan Dream

  • 5 of 5

In short this is the nicest place we have stayed in our holidays on Europe in the last 5-6 years and a real treat for our first stay in Italy.

If you are looking for beautiful views and relaxation then this is it. We felt at home straight away and kids loved the pool, ping pong and wifi! The views are stunning and we could have happily just done nothing for the whole week.

The rooms were all lovely and the pictures don't do justice to how big the downstairs is or the amount of shady outside dining / seating / hammocks/ sunbathing. The lounge and bedroom are stuffed with books far more interesting that the ones we had bought.

The are some beautiful towns to visit only short drive away. The town is about 20 mins walk which is lovely on a evening. The town itself is small but has a couple of nice restaurants, one of which was Il Barrino which was just fab multi course dinner (no menu the owner just explains what each course is - in English thank god) but great value too. The town has a little shop selling essentials and a lovely bakery which closes at twelve, and there is a big supermarket a short drive away.

Should also mention Adi the guy managing house, really nice and nothing was to much trouble.

So in summary just a fabulous house that feels like a home and I am gutted we couldn't stay for two weeks. When we come back to Italy it will be here.

La torre del cella

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at a property that offered both exceptional amenities but much more than that, in that the enviroment it was situated made it all the more of a memorable experience. We booked our stay more or less as a random choice. Our criteria was somewhere "south of Siena" but we were so fortunate to discover that we had struck it so lucky. The property is situated about 5 minutes drive or 20 minutes walk down a rough track to the charming walled town of Montisi, which just happened to have its local Festa the week we were staying there.

We would recommend the villa to anybody who enjoys the relaxation of a secluded property with the added benefit that you are able to use this as a base to explore the region.

A blissful experience

  • 5 of 5

This really is a stunning setting. The house, as all the other reviewers have said, is beautifully designed and decorated. Wonderful views from the bedrooms. What I loved the most was waking up at dawn to the sound of the nightingale, who also sang as the sun set, and watching the sun as it gradually lit up the mist and hills. Walks in the early morning and evenings through the olive groves were wonderful, watching the deer feeding in the field below the house, or the wild pigs and all the piglets feeding further down the valley, the light constantly changing across the hills - even the thunderstorms were dramatic. The gardens and pool were a delight.

I would highly recommend a cooking lesson at Podere Il Casale, near Pienza, which is beautiful and I loved the cooking; a trip to La Foce with lunch at Dopolavora and then a late guided walk around the gardens; a visit to Lucignano D'Asso and a walk along the white road; a visit to Bosco della Ragnaia, near San Giovanni D'Asso; Monticchiello, which is very pretty; and generally just walking and looking.

We had a great two weeks, despite a lot of thunderstorms and would love to go back. I missed the views from the moment I left.

Car: recommended

Montisi is an as of yet 'undiscovered' medieval hilltop hamlet, where days and weeks are all too short. With Montisi having a bakery, grocery shop, choice of restaurants, and even a 'Cinema Paradiso', one would, in fact, not need leave Montisi at all if a book, a bottle of wine and priceless Tuscan views is your kind of holiday.

On the other hand, such world heritage sites as Pienza, Siena and Montepulciano are all within 20-30 minutes drive. Even Florence and Rome are within easy reach by car, one and two hours respectively, or by direct train from Chiusi.

Although Montisi is not an obvious beach location, a one day trip to the Tuscan coast is very doable with, for instance, Castiglione della Pescaia one and a half hours away by car.
