Overview

About the property

A palapa structure located on a large private hillside lot bay view.

Welcome to Alma de artista (soul of the artist)! Located on the hillside overlooking Playa La Ropa beach and the Zihuatanejo Bay, Alma de Artista is a delight for the senses. Surrounded by fragrant gardens, my home is a unique al fresco palapa structure encouraging harmony with nature. Neighbors are local hummingbirds and butterflies.

Nestled in the upper half of a large lot with only two neighboring houses the compound is secure and fenced for privacy. A turquoise infinity edge swimming pool is located steps from your bed and is shared with only one other unit.

The home is the summertime retreat of an ex-pat artist who draws inspiration from being with nature. Alma de Artista is perfect for artists and those looking to refresh their soul.

The space is constructed on two levels. The bedroom suite with king size bed faces the bay and the sky. Breakfast in bed will never be the same again. A tropical hardwood desk space and WiFi are available to connect with your friends and family.

Hidden under a pergola is an open air rain shower with river rock flooring. Adjacent is a private enclosed toilet. The vanity features a re-purposed African bowl used for the sink.

The lower level incorporates a large al fresco living area with guest nest perched over a natural rock. Kitchen amenities include a full size refrigerator, microwave, counter-top convection oven and hammered copper sink. All utensils, cookware and dishes are provided. Drinking water is delivered as needed. Daily housekeeping is included.

Ceiling fans, 20' ceilings and ocean breezes provide a comfortable environment. A washer and dryer are available for guests use. Linens and towels are included.

The owner lives at the far end of the land and is available for any questions you might have. No pets as the owner has a dog and cat on the property. Street parking is available. The entry stairway descends through tropical forest to arrive at my home. As you walk through the gate one first encounters an enclosed Zen garden leading down to the pool area and house. My home is not handicapped accessible as there are stairs.

One can walk to the beach which is about a 15 minute walk. Or via taxi which is available 24 hours a day.

Come experience the sensuous, romantic atmosphere of Alma de Artista. It will be an experience you won't soon forget.

About Michael Hackett

I am originally from the Midwest of the United States however lived many years in Melbourne, Australia where my family had moved to in the 1960's. My education has been in art and architecture, school at RMIT in Melbourne. I returned to the USA in the 70's moving to Boston and then to Philadelphia, eventually settling in Los Angeles, California. Through the years I have traveled through out Europe and the Middle East yet found my place of heart in Zihuatanejo.

Michael Hackett purchased this bungalow in 2008

Why Michael Hackett chose Zihuatanejo

My heart responded to Zihuatanejo while traveling here with friends, staying at the Hotel Amuleto, which is a few steps away from my present house.

I was searching for a gentler simpler lifestyle away from corporate chaos and found the property in 2007. I designed the house as to my needs wanting nature and a tropical environment. Never have I regretted the decision to leave Los Angeles for this region of the world.

What makes this bungalow unique

The property located on a hillside above the beach was a great find for me. A friend and myself decided to purchase the land and design and build our homes. Essentially leaving most the land to the trees and natural rock formations.

I planned my house to incorporate as much of nature as could be done. It is a spectacular location overlooking the bay and beach and out to sea. I love watching ships and boats come and go. Local sea birds fly at eye level, hummingbirds, butterflies are generally in the garden every morning. The sounds of the tropics at night fascinate the senses and puts me at peace.

I have always fantasized of having healing place for others to come to and find peace as I have and this is why I am offering my home to you.

Heaven on Earth

  • 5 of 5

There are no words to accurately impart how wonderful Michael and his slice of paradise are. I had the most magnificent vacation to date in my 44 yrs. Tears fell from my eyes when I left. The home truly blends with nature, and is super clean despite not having solid walls. A maid came Monday, Wednesday and Friday. She was wonderful and so hard working. The day bed with the wind chimes is the perfect place to drift off on an afternoon nap. The compound is very private, which I loved being a quiet private person myself. I spent my days lounging in the pool that has an incredible view. Truly from every angle the view is worth more than gold. The kitchen is fully equipped to prepare food (minus a stove) and there is a very large supermarket not far to shop at. I froze beautiful fruits and made morning smoothies. Michael is kind, welcoming, non-intrusive. He has a great sense of humor, and I miss him already. I am plotting my return...

We really enjoyed our stay at Alma De Artiste !!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time at Alma De Artiste. From the moment we met our host Michael and arrived at the place we instantly felt welcomed and at ease. Michael did everything to make sure we were well taken care of and had everything we needed, he even arranged for a taxi to pick us up at the airport and fresh baked goods for our first morning. We loved that the place was designed such that it embraced open air living, combining and inviting the outdoors into the home. All of the furnishings, artwork and details were welcome touches that portrayed a sense of thought and beauty. We had the most amazing view to look at both day and night. Michael arranged a maid to come in every other day to change linens and clean, she was very sweet and did an amazing job. We couldn't have been happier and were pleased we could walk down the hill to the beach or get a taxi for around $3.50 US into town. I would highly recommend this place !!!! Steve & Cindy

Private Paradise Perfect for Two

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a week here and the property was perfect for us. Our host, Michael, has created a perfectly lovely open air retreat, complete with his gorgeous artwork. The view is just fantastic and the furnishings were simple but perfect. The bed linens and towels were very nice, and I think the pillows were better than any others we've slept on. The kitchen is equipped with everything we needed to actually cook, the shower had hot water whenever we wanted and the washer and dryer worked well. WiFi was always on and pretty quick, pool was cool but clean and refreshing.

Michael was a wonderful host. He made sure we had all the phone numbers we needed and even drove us all around town to show us the restaurants he liked and the markets that we could stock up at. He also helped arrange for our airport pick-up and return as well as on-site massages.

Getting around was very easy; Most days we would walk down to Playa La Ropa and either hang out there or take a cab ($80 pesos) or combi ($17 pesos) to the town center. Takes about 15 minutes to walk down the hill. Our favorite beach, Playa Las Gatas, is another 15 minutes walk from La Ropa. For a shorter walk the Amuleto is right next door and has a great restaurant, and Suspiro is just around the corner.

We really enjoyed our stay and hope to come back very soon!

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was simply AMAZING. My wife and I loved every aspect of Michael's place. The views, the colors, the sounds and the seclusion make this a special place. On top of that, Michael is a great host with information about Zihua and the BEST food. We look forward to our next visit!

Perfect. Just perfect.

  • 5 of 5

My two daughters and I spent 10 wonderful days at Alma de Artiste... what a wonderful, exotic, soulful home. The location is perfect for late afternoon lounging away from the hubub of la ropa and las gatas... the evenings are absolutely magical in this amazing perch... with the lights of Zihua sparkling like diamonds across the bay. Michael has crafted a singularly delightful experience that integrates seamlessly into the surrounding environment ... you are immediately connected to something beyond "vacation". Michael's art fit's the space perfectly and elevates the experience even further. We will return to this special place many times in the future. Thank you Michael for creating such a wonderful place and making it available to us.

If you aren't staying here, you should be!

  • 5 of 5

This is a one of a kind property that is perfect for a couple. It is very romantic, and peaceful. The pictures on the VRBO site understate how beautiful this is. I agree wholeheartedly with the other 5 star reviews. Be aware that there are some steep steps to get to the road. They are safe, and not difficult, but you need to be aware. We did not have a car, but relied solely on the taxis, which are always available on five minutes notice, and are very inexpensive (40-50 pesos). Michael includes a local cell phone with the taxi number preprogrammed, and many times the taxi was waiting for us at the top of the stairs before we could get their. Also, there are taxis waiting at all the beaches, and are plentiful throughout the City, so we never had to call for a taxi when we were out and about. I recommend that you go to Playa La Ropa, which is a short 5 minute taxi ride from the property. It is great for swimming and beach walking, and there are several good restaurants. There are several places on the beach to get very good 60 minutes massages for 200 pesos (12 US dollars when we were there). The beach is family friendly, but also very romantic. I recommend you have lunch at El Manglar. The food and service is great, and having a 3 foot long iguana stop by the table to visit is quite a treat. You will not find a more gracious host than Michael. This property is a good value.
