Welcome to our Kailua Beach House!

May 2017 NOTE: We have replaced the thin, slated windows ("jalosy" type) in the bedroom with a double-paned, insulated window (see photo). This has dramatically reduced "road noise" for the bedroom! Most of our guests have said that they had no concerns at night, but a few have commented on the noise from the street. We wanted to address this concern and make sure that the evenings are quiet for all of our sleepers!

Large 1-bedroom stand-alone “cottage”: This 600 sq ft unit has its own separate entrance (we live in a house behind the rental). There are no shared walls, and there is a fence between the rental and our house – you will have more privacy here that in other “attached” rentals. The bedroom is large (160 sq ft), and the living room, kitchen, & eating areas are super roomy. The roomy trade-off is that the bathroom is small (no tub – shower only).

Excellent Location! We are located less than 2 blocks down the road from Kailua Beach, and also just a few blocks to the main ‘Kailua Town’ with restaurants, shops, & stores – there is no need to drive to the beach, or to dinner. For those of you who know about Kailua and want to rent here, you will love our location! For those of you who have not stayed in Kailua before: Kailua is a small town (40,000 population) right across the island from Honolulu. The beach here is amazing – Google it! – it is about 2.5 miles long, with year-round gentle, warm, clear waters, and soft white sandy beaches. This is the town and beach where President Obama and his family stay over Christmas. It is an awesome tourist town for people who prefer to have a more relaxing, quieter Hawaiian vacation. But, if you want to hit the shopping and nightlife of Waikiki, it is only a 20-30 minute drive over to Honolulu.

Full kitchen! We have a full kitchen, including a dishwasher, Keurig coffee maker, microwave, place settings for 8, and all the usual kitchen utensils and tools. There is also a nice stainless steel propane BBQ outside for burgers, grilled fish, kabobs, or whatever you’d like. Most 1-bedroom rentals have only a hot plate and a sink, so this is a nice addition.

Parking: The unit has 1 off-street parking spot in front of the rental, so your car will not have to be on the side of the road.

Sleeping for 2-4: Very comfortable, new, pillow-top King Serta Perfect-Sleeper bed in the bedroom, with additional sleeping for 2 on the 2 fold-up portable twin mattresses (which are more appropriate for school-aged children than adults).

Bathroom with shower only (no bathtub), but freshly painted & updated. Includes hairdryer, and comfy plush towels.

Beach Stuff! We have 3 boogie boards, folding beach chairs, a small cooler, & several beach towels for our renters to use. If you want to try paddle boarding or kayaking (a must for Kailua vacationers!), then the best beachside rental place in town is right nearby.

WiFi and Cable TV: Yep, we have both at the unit.

Ambiance & General Info: Our rental is in a neighborhood, and we live on the property as well. THIS IS A NO-SMOKING PROPERTY. The nights are quiet, and since this is a residential neighborhood, it is not a place for loud gatherings or late parties.

Cute and comfortable

We stayed here for a week with our two boys, ages 1 and 4. Bonny and Rob were excellent, and even provided a pack-n-play for our baby to sleep in, which was a huge benefit to us not having to bring our own! The location is ideal, an easy walk to both the beach and the main shopping district with multiple grocery stores and many great places to eat, and there are even paved sidewalks. The king bed was really comfortable, and the four of us all slept comfortably in the bedroom with the boys on foam mats/ pack'n'play. The kitchen is very well stocked with all the equipment, dishes, and basic food items (vegetable oil, ketchup, rice, etc) you could want to cook your own meals, which we did! The only caution I would give to those sensitive to these factors would be that the main living area can get pretty warm in the afternoon (AC unit is only in the bedroom), and at night there is a fair amount of road noise and light from the nearby street. We live in an urban area so weren't bothered by it, so just leaving that info to help others make their decision. Next time we visit Kailua we will definitely check this listing first to see if it's available!

Great location and experience!

Bonny and Rob are terrific hosts and made our stay very welcoming and comfortable. The beach house has everything you need to enjoy your stay. The location is perfect, a short walk takes you to the beach, shops and restaurants. Fresh markets are held on Thursday and Sunday mornings with a large selection of fruit and veggies and just a short walk away. A large outdoor community pool and library are also near by.

We really enjoyed our stay!!!

I very much enjoyed my stay and I definitely will consider returning next year. It's close to the beach and town and you just have to tune out the traffic on Kailua Rd.

Clean and close to the beach!

My husband and our 20 month old son enjoyed our stay. The house is well equipped with all that you need to cook your own meals and play at the beach. The location is convenient to the beach and downtown. While other guests have complained about the road noise, we found that it was quiet at night, and only during the day that traffic is noisy. So if you plan to be at the beach or exploring the rest of Oahu during the day this will not be a problem. The walk to the beach is about 8 minutes and is easy enough to do with all of the beach gear you need for the day.

Great experience!

We started out as a week rental, but ended up staying 20 days. We found the rental to be exactly what we expected, nicely decorated, great size for a one bedroom and excellent location! The kitchen is well-equipped, many other rentals I looked at only had a small fridge/kitchenette situation. This was great for us, we cooked quite a few meals there. The kids (5yo & 3yo) slept on the fold-out mats for the 20 days and they worked just fine. Like most homes & non-hotel rentals in Hawaii, there is only AC in the bedroom. There are a couple hours in the afternoon when the living room gets hot, but with the fan and all the windows open, it's doable. Of course, we're from FL so we're used to worse humidity, lol. Outside of that 2-4pm time period, the living area is very comfortable, with breezes flowing almost continuously through the louvered windows on all sides. The AC in the bedroom worked fine for kid naptimes & bedtime, very comfortable. From the house, you can walk an easy 7 minutes to the beach, passing a few shops along the way, including Kalapawai market. Bob's Pizzeria is great, their "slice" is 1/4 of an extra-large pizza and the kids loved shooting the restaurant-furnished water guns at the birds on the patio. You then have to stop at Island Snow for some Shave Ice! You can even walk to Kailua Town (we didn't because we had a 3yo & no stroller) but it was a 2 minute car ride.

We were moving to Kailua from the mainland and Bonny was a PLETHORA of information!! She was so helpful with so many ins & outs of moving, suggestions for areas to live, all kinds of information. She emailed me several times before our trip with information about moving. She is great as a rental owner too, attentive & responsive. My husband started work during our stay so we had 2 rental cars for a week. She was quick to move one of their cars to make room for both our cars to park at the property.

I would suggest this rental for travelers that are looking to experience Kailua and Hawaii as a local. This place is EXTREMELY affordable for what you are getting in Hawaii. If you want constant A/C and chocolates on your pillow, you will need to spend A LOT more to stay in a hotel. But then you won't be in Kailua because there are none. If we hadn't moved here, I would plan on staying here again next visit!

Good location but needs some tlc

We stayed for 8 nights at KBH and thought the location was good. Easy travel into town, beach and into Waikiki.

The unit does have everything that is described but it is an older place and the cleanliness was not up to our standards. It needs a good scrub! Interior doors/baseboards and cupboard doors were very dirty, and outside windows showed dirt. Easy fixes especially if the unit is being cleaned after each renter. We bought sanitizing wipes to clean around door handles; to wipe black marks off doors etc. I had to clean the air conditioning unit filter as it was caked with dirt/dust). There are also some repairs needed ( broken window levers, the couch is not very comfortable to sit on - seems like frame is broken, and the bathroom fan is old and didn't work well,. Very noisy while running).

The unit is located on a very busy street so the traffic was loud especially during the weekday mornings.

There is only air conditioning in the bedroom so we found it to be too humid some days even with the windows open, and my husband found it too too loud to keep running at night. The small bathroom especially has poor air circulation so the bath towels started to smell funny after 2 days.

Overall it was "fine" for our stay.

Owner's Response: I am so sorry to hear your feedback! We take much pride in our rental being very clean and having everything in perfect working condition. You are correct - the bathroom fan malfunctioned and a front portion of the couch frame developed a crack and started to sag during your stay. Both are now repaired/ replaced. I wish you had notified us of these things as soon as you noticed them – we are always available for these types of urgent concerns (& non-urgent questions!), and would have fixed them promptly during your visit! For future renters reading this – please contact us immediately if anything like this happens, and we’ll get things fixed quickly! We also gave the cleaning feedback to our cleaner, and had an “extra” level of cleaning done after your stay. The humidity is out of our control, unfortunately – that’s the nature of the windward side of the Island: it’s warm and very humid. Towels and wet clothes will start getting musty within a day or 2 – thus the A/C, washer/ dryer, drying rack, and large stack of towels. :) The Waikiki / Kapolei side of the Island (where the resorts are located - there are no hotels in Kailua) is much drier, so folks desiring less humidity might prefer that area over Kailua! Mahalo for your feedback – it helps us keep our rental in good shape!
