The base rate is for 6 persons. Each additional person is $50 per night up to a total of 10 people. Children are counted in the total number but children under the age of 2 are free. Our off season base rate for 6 persons is $250 a night and our high season rate is $350 a night for 6 persons.

Important: We limit the total number of persons on the property including day guests to 12 people, due to the limits of the water and septic systems and out of respect for the neighbors. So if you are thinking about a wedding or some other sort of large gathering this is not the right home for you.

If you have a group of 14 that wish to spend the night then you might consider also renting the cabin that is next to our home but with different owners. It sleeps 4 and the VRBO listing for it is

Bumstead Spit Beach House is one of the most unique properties on Lummi Island.

Very private, it’s nestled on two acres, well away from the road and includes 200 feet of level, pristine beach (with a boat ramp and two mooring buoys). This property is perfect for boaters, kayakers and canoeists. Launching and recovering your trailerable boat is a snap. It’s an easy put in for kayaks, canoes, rowboats or stand-up paddle boards. You can leave your boat on a buoy or pull it up to the top of the ramp for easy access. From the beach you can make sure the ferry is running and on schedule.

If you aren’t a boater you can at least enjoy a parade of boats as they pass by the house: yachts of all description, sailboats, purse seiners, Lummi Nation crab boats, tugs and work boats. The orange inflatables are the Coast Guard fast response boats which can hit a top speed of 46 miles per hour. The equally fast moving black bottom boats are Homeland Security and Customs. During the whale season the large whale watching boats will steam by.

Our beautifully decorated family friendly home looks across Hale Passage at Portage Island, Bellingham and Mt. Baker. The home comfortably sleeps 8 people with a minimum four night stay in high season and 2 nights in off season.. Sorry, but we do not allow pets.

Seaside living is enhanced with dramatic view-capturing windows, vaulted ceilings, an open loft, and warm wood detailing. French doors lead to a huge deck for great indoor-outdoor access, and there is even another deck down in front at the beach edge.

There are two bedrooms on the main floor each with its own bath. Up a spiral staircase to the loft you’ll find another double bed with a sink and there is also a double mattress on the mezzanine In the outbuilding there’s a studio with a hide-a-bed and bath with shower. There is also a multi-purpose room great for yoga or for the kids to spread out their toys and games. We reserve the two car garage for our own use (boat and tool storage).

We have two inflatable kayaks and an inflatable dingy(along with life preservers) for your use. Bicycles can be rented on the island. However, there is one bicycle on the property available for guest use.

We are located within easy driving, walking or cycling distance from the ferry landing, grocery store, post office, library and the Beach Store Café. All located less than 1 mile away.

A short 10-minute ferry ride takes you from the Mainland to Lummi Island, which has a year round population of 900 people. Day trips can easily be made to Vancouver BC, Seattle or Mt Baker. You are a half hour from shopping destinations in Bellingham, Lynden, and the Canadian border.

Saturdays feature a seasonal farmer’s market from June through August. You can purchase fresh produce, pastries, and the local artists have their work available for sale. On the island you will find two restaurants, The Beach Store Cafe and the almost world famous Willows Inn featuring 2015 James Beard award winner—Blaine Wetzel, and a weekend sandwich shop located next to the Islander store. The Islander is a general grocery store which also carries beer and wine.

During the summer months the unique reef net fishing fleet catches salmon in Legoe Bay on the west side of the island.

Two churches on the Island hold services Sunday mornings--Island Chapel meets at the Lummi Island Grange Hall across the street from the post office and about a block north of the ferry dock. The charming century old Congregational Church is a short distance away on Legoe Bay Road.

The Island has a number of great massage therapists who can provide in home service. You might want to consider using Lummi Island Concierge to take care of your meals for the first day or two. You’ll find our kitchen well-equipped with some basic staples on hand: cooking oil, sugar, flour, salt and pepper, baking soda and baking powder and coffee.

All Lummi Islanders agree that when we get off the ferry and drive onto the island we can feel the energy shift to a calmer, mellower vibration. Bumstead Spit Beach House can be your launching point for water sports, beach combing, hiking, biking or browsing on the island. Or, if you choose, you can just stare at the view from the deck or the beach and ponder how you might be able to move to an island some day soon.

About Richard Smith

Our extended family includes: a novelist, an architect, a chiropractor, a housing manager, an aircraft mechanic, a retired insurance peddler, a volunteer coordinator for our land trust, a few stay at home moms, CEO of a software company, a college administrator, a community activist and a whole bunch of really cool grade and middle school kids.

Richard Smith purchased this house in 2014

Why Richard Smith chose Lummi Island

The Smith Family is a bit obsessed with Lummi Island having first purchased waterfront property here in 2001. Now, as a group, we have three houses and another six acre view plot. We couldn’t resist Bumstead Spit Beach House. We know that it is truly unique for many reasons not the least of which is the ease of launching and recovering a boat from our own private boat ramp. Even without the concrete ramp it would be an easy place to get boats of all sizes in the water because of the gentle grade and the size of rock on the beach which gives great traction. There is rather deep water directly in front of the house but to the south it is quite shallow at low tide and one can walk out a great distance. Also the water is a bit warmer there making wading and even swimming more pleasant. With a large extended family who congregate on the island on most holidays and for summer vacations Bumstead Spit, in addition to our other two homes, provide us with room to sleep almost everyone in comfort. And, who knows when another Smith will want to move to the island full time.

What makes this house unique

There are only an handful of homes on Lummi Island that are right on the beach, have privacy and a yard big enough for activities like volleyball, badminton or croquet. On the entire island there are only four or five places where one can ramp a boat. There are even fewer places that enjoy a more than 180 degree view. From Bumstead Spit Beach we can see all the way to Vancouver and the ferry docks on both sides of Hales Passage. To the east we look between the Lummi Nation and their Portage Island across Bellingham Bay to Bellingham and Fairhaven. Beyond is magnificent Mt Baker and other Cascade Mountain destinations. To the south Eliza Island and in the distance Chuckanut Drive. The house is built on the back edge of the spit up against a steep hillside which blocks noise from the road above. At low tide a long beach walk is possible. The house is amazingly comfortable and inviting. It’s five minutes to the ferry dock. From the mainland side it’s only thirty minutes to downtown Bellingham.

But why leave? Stare at the view. You’ll soon have what a lot of us have: “Lummiitus” defined as “having no desire to leave the island.”

Top notch!

I wish I could stay forever! The house is beautiful and the island is serene and quiet. We had eagles right outside the back of the house, watched the ferry come and go, and enjoyed walks in the beach looking for treasures. There are many beautiful books to enjoy in the window seat. The kitchen is well equipped and lovely as well.!The Cafe in town has amazing food! Our host was welcoming and accommodating. We are all leaving here much calmer and happier people!

Fantastic house - comfortable & spotless, with an amazing view!

  • 5 of 5

We've rented houses on vrbo for years, and this is probably the best one yet. I can't say enough good things about this house - it was so comfortable and convenient! The house was spotless, we felt like no one had rented it before us. The kitchen is fully stocked for a large group, lots of throw pillows and blankets to get cozy in the living room, wifi and tv worked great, the upstairs room has loads of kids toys and books that our son really enjoyed, and the bedrooms/bathrooms downstairs were perfect - we felt right at home. We had 4 people there for a week (2 adults, one 11 year old and one 2 year old) in the winter and it fit us perfectly, but we could have easily fit more people in. On a clear day, the view of Mt. Baker is beautiful - and on a clear or cloudy day, the view of the water is gorgeous too. We loved looking for shells/rocks on the beach and even just sitting in the window seat in the living room looking at the view with a cup of coffee. We were sad to leave, we liked this house better than our own!

Mi casa es su casa

  • 5 of 5

This home has everything you need. It's clean well maintained and very comfortable. The view of Mount Baker is basically unobstructed, the Cascades of Southern Canada and a local seal right off the patio. In the mornings we had eagles and evenings we shared with a doe feeding in the yard. We were absolutely at pease on Lumni Island.

We were a group of a few families and really enjoyed our stay! The property is beachfront and the views are incredible. We canoed, we made beautiful meals and drank wine on the patio while watching three beautiful deer. Highly recommend and give it my highest review of 5 stars!

There are three land trust preserves on the island that allow visitors to take hikes on the trails. Mtn biking not allowed on the trails.

Curry Preserve – 2449 N. Nugent Road

(lower entrance, park in the mowed areas to the right and left of the driveway) and Tuttle Lane (upper entrance, park in the pull-off on the east side of the road).

Exploring the Curry Preserve can take as long as you want and is easy wandering on footpaths through the fields and forest. The Trust’s Community Garden and Orchard project is located near the Nugent Road entrance.

Otto Preserve and Heritage Trust Resource Center – 3560 Sunrise Road.

The trailhead is beyond the parking lot. A trail map is posted in the kiosk. The main Loop Trail is a lovely walk through mature forest and is well protected in light rains due to many sheltering trees. The Loop Trail, together with the Baumgart Woods and Walden Walk side trails, are an easy 1.4 mile walk.

Baker Preserve – Seacrest Drive, about 1/3 mile south of the Sunrise Road intersection, on right.

A trail map is posted in the kiosk. This is a vigorous hike up a steep, winding trail. The hike is 1.64 miles to an overlook with views of the San Juan Islands. Sign-in at the trailhead kiosk is required to help the Trust manage this special property.
