About Deborah

Originally from the St. Louis area, I lived in Petersburg from 1998 to 2013. The first time I drove into town looking for a home to buy, the 'Old Petersburg Operahouse' was for sale. Having majored in music many years ago, the old building sent out a siren call for me to buy it! I've been buying and rehabbing in town ever since. In 2011 I opened The Cottage for vacationers. It was a very slow start, and I wondered if it had been the right decision. But soon the Creation Museum guests started arriving--I love my guests! What a joy to interact with these Christian families (many with lots of children :), who are kind and thoughtful...and take care of my home! It was obvious right away that a vacation home offers a much-needed alternative to hotel rooms...most of which cannot accommodate the larger families. Also, the ability to cook your own meals instead of eating out can save money. (And doing a little laundry during vacation can rescue you from a mountain of clothes when you get home...;-) I hope you enjoy the adventure of staying in this historic general store...

Everyone was happy with the accomodations.

  • 5 of 5

There were 28 of us, ages 3 - 82. Family came from Montana, Indiana, Tennessee,

Maryland and Pennsylvania. I was asked how I found this place, (on line). Also

everyone agreed that it was the perfect place to enjoy one another's company, and

the children had plenty of space to play together. The Ark and Creation Museums were close so we all enjoyed visiting those places too. The kitchens were perfect for our needs, and we appreciated the air-conditioning. Thanks so much.

This property is a wonderful home that is clean and set up well for large groups and families!

Friends from AK and PA joined together here for a week and visited the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter! Wonderful home and well situated for our group. The home is well stocked with all the kitchen items one needs when cooking for big families. It is very close to the Creation Museum and about 45 mins from the Ark. We had a fabulous week!

Clean, comfortable, spacious, and wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

5 different families shared this location to visit the Creation Museum & Ark. Family 1: 2 adults, 4 children; Family 2: one elderly lady; Family 3: a couple in their young 60s; Family 4: 2 adults, 3 children; Family 5: 2 adults, one child. We had PLENTY of room and still could have fit another family. We rented the entire home and there are TWO kitchens, TWO laundry areas, etc.

There is a small park within walking distance of this location and a play yard across the street. There's also a huge field across from the park. It's a nice area to walk around.

The owners/managers were wonderful to work with!!

The creation museum is close - no freeways - 15 minute or less drive (including parking). The ark is further away and you can find yourself in traffic traveling there - be sure to use a navigation device that tracks "traffic". There is a Kroger about 20 minutes away - it sells clothes sort of like a Walmart but the quality of everything at Kroger was superb. I would plan on doing most of my shopping there.

We hope to come back and stay at another one of Deborah's Guesthouses - just our family of 6.

Great Stay

  • 5 of 5

This was a really well done and cared for property. Our group consisted of 3 couples meeting half way between Cleveland, OH and Knoxville, TN and there was plenty to do in the surrounding area to keep us busy.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

Wow! That sums up how we felt when we first arrived until we left three days later. Beautiful home, all the amenities, clean and comfortable. We felt right at home the minute we stepped inside. Great size for our group of eighteen ( four families)! We had space and didn't feel on top of each other. We were close to our main destinations : the Creation Museum and Ark Encounter. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hated to leave! Thank you!

This was our 3rd trip to the General Store. My grandsons love it there. They didn't want to leave. Deb was more than gracious to modify my travel dates when I realized we had a conflict with Easter Plans. It's a quiet and peaceful little town. The kids enjoy riding bikes without worry of traffic. I rent often on VRBO, much better than hotel rooms. The General Store is a great find for a vacation destination.
