About Karen Mannix
We feel fortunate to be able to live where we choose and happy to have chosen Uruguay as our home. For the past 6 years we have been renovating an historic property in a lovely, private and quiet neighborhood in Punta del Este. It has been a labor of love and quite the adventure.
Karen Mannix purchased this Cottage in 2008
Why Karen Mannix chose Punta del Este
We were enchanted with the neighborhood of beautiful homes with very large well cared for gardens. Bougainvillia, roses, fruit trees and pines and many birds singing abound. Being able to restore a 100 year old property with stone floors, french tile roof, thick brick walls and well established garden has been a dream come true.
What makes this Cottage unique
We love being able to live in such a neighborhood and yet minutes away from everything we would want or need. Hearing the sound of horses going by, walking to a most beautiful beach, breathing the clean fresh air and great weather suits us perfectly.

Pristine Guest House in the Woods
The property is actually even nicer than it looks in the pictures! Spacious bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, big comfy bed, and a great little patio area next to the pool. It's just a 5 minute drive from the city, and pleasant walking distance to the beach.
Karen and her husband are fantastic hosts! They'll give as much attention or privacy as you desire.
Looking forward to staying here again next time we're in Punta del Este.
Wonderful getaway...Karen & Kenny are gracious hosts Their beautiful cottage was such a treat. Our stay was easy, comfortable and relaxing. Highly recommend as a slower pace alternative to enjoy the beauty of Punta del Este.
So nice to meet you both and happy to know that you had a wonderful time exploring this little corner of the world.
We're always amazed at who happens to come stay and how much we share. To know that you both are in love and enjoy sharing adventures together is the best energy our little cottage can have.
All the very best to you both
We spent 11 days in this lovely casita, and hated to leave. It is nestled into the lush garden of a beautiful old home near the beach. The casita is beautifully designed, with covered terrace, sitting area, eat in kitchen, bedroom and bath.. It is beautifully constructed and very comfortably and tastefully appointed. There is a small pool too. The casita is just blocks from the beach, and an easy drive to shops and restaurants..Karen and Ken are gracious hosts, who showed us their favorite markets and hosted a parrilla in their beautiful outdoor barbeque area. They made our stay in Punta del esta feel so comfortable, that it was truly like being at home away. Highly recommend this little corner of heaven. We definitely hope to return@
Thank you for your lovely review. It was truly a pleasure getting to know you both. It's so wonderful to meet couples who are relaxed and enjoy spending time together. So happy that you were able to play golf at several of the courses and enjoyed the one closest to us the best. We miss seeing you eating mangoes for breakfast and sharing a glass of wine with you in the evening. We would love to have you return, play some golf, work on your book and continue to perfect your parrilla skills.
Two Nights in Punta del Este
This private guest house is perfect! The owners are wonderful hosts and the property is beautiful. This felt like staying at a friend's house - with complete privacy and comfort. The stay was a perfect introduction to the area - allowing us to have a quiet retreat from the condos and apartment hustle and bustle of Punta. We used Uber perfectly to go into town when we wanted and came "home" when we wanted peace and quiet. Thank you for a perfect stay in Punta del Este.
One if the greatest joys we derive from having guests stay in the cottage is meeting people such as yourselves. We're so happy that your first visit to Uruguay was enjoyable. Thank you for the beautiful bottle of Narbona Tannant and great conversation. Thank you for your wonderful review. Wishing you all the very best in the coming new year.
My wife and I had the pleasure of staying here for a very pleasant 8 nights. The hosts, Karen and Ken, were more than accommodating and helpful. The quest house is located in a very nice quiet neighborhood and close to all the beaches and attractions. It was nice to take walks along the quiet and unhurried streets with the fragrance of abundant flowers in the air. Also worth noting is the very private pool and patio area located conveniently just out our door. Two big thumbs up!
We very much enjoyed meeting you both and so glad you enjoyed your stay. It's just wonderful to meet a lovely couple with a sense of adventure. Absolutely loved having a pot luck parrilla and sharing stories.
Wish you both all the best in your travels
Idyllic Cottage in Lovely Neighborhood near Ocean!
We returned home recently after a two-week stay at Villa St. Andrews with Karen and Ken. Their idyllic cottage was just the tonic for both my husband and myself! The cottage is a lovely blend of elegant touches with a colonial Spanish flavor. The interior is carefully appointed to provide everything you might need for lounging and relaxing. The kitchen has modern appliances, all the utensils and china you would ever need, and a comfortable dining area. The bedroom has a king-size bed and the bathroom has a cleverly designed open shower.
It was amazing to learn that Ken (who was a contractor in his “former life”) built not only the cottage, but also the refreshing plunge pool. Ken carefully tends the pool and the phenomenal garden that graces the property. He and Karen have accumulated an astonishing number of vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers to add color to your table and zest to your meals.
Perhaps the most enjoyable aspect of our stay was getting to know Karen and Ken! They are both accomplished in their own right, well-read and engaging conversationalists. An added advantage is that they are quite knowledgeable about the area and, indeed, about Uruguay as a whole. We enjoyed taking in beach shops and restaurants in Jose Ignacio and sampling many of the fine dining establishments in Punta del Este.
Several suggestions for the adventurous: Be sure to try Mia Bistro — an open-air restaurant on the beach a short walk from Villa St. Andrews. Do visit the new, young winery named Villa Eden. It is a bit of a drive, but plan on staying for a large, late lunch. Their chef is excellent. Every dish had subtle flavors to enjoy. And for you equestrians, there is a classical dressage instructor named Mauricio Delucchi who kindly and expertly helped reacquaint me to riding after a long absence from the saddle. His wife, Paulina Morales, manages their establishment, Haras Godiva. It is exceptionally well designed, including an indoor arena to ride on rainy or hot days. Mauricio is an aficionado of the baroque Lusitania horse, as am I. We had lots to talk about and a couple of much appreciated lessons.
VRBO was a new experience for us, but we truly enjoyed it and would recommend it most highly!
Dearest Joe and Pat, Thank you so much for your lovely review. We so enjoyed seeing you upon arrival, pale from the northern winter and exhausted, become refreshed, tan and laughing. We can't begin to tell you how marvelous it is to meet a long married couple, so very accomplished in each of their lives, be so very much in love.
Your passion for life is inspiring, thank you for sharing it with us!
Horses are available close by to rent and ride on the beach and elsewhere. Several Polo fields are quite near.
