Overview

About the property

2 bedrooms, 4 persons. Moveable, luxurious, exotic vacation. Captain and chef.

Sailing vessel (s/v) Beagle Knot is a 38' catamaran. We can accommodate up to 4 guests.

We sail the Virgin Islands during the winter (Nov - April) and we sail Grenada and the Grenadines in the summer (June - August). We invite you to discover these islands and their surroundings, via the sea, naturally.

In the virgin islands there is the choice of three groups of islands: the British Virgin Islands (BVI), the US Virgin Islands (USVI) and the virgin islands of Puerto Rico also known as the Spanish Virgin Islands. The BVI and the USVI can be visited together. The Spanish VI are a little further afield but are worth the trip all by themselves.

In Grenada both the sea and the land base attractions are vying for your attention. We can help you balance both, depending on your preferences.

Your crew, Denis the Captain and LaDonna the chef, organizer and everything else on the boat offer you three levels of service:

Full board: Everything is included, all your meals, breakfast, lunches, munchies, dinners. It includes wine, beer, cocktails, sundowners, etc.. We cook for you, we take care of the dishes. Real vacations for you. We recommend Full Board for Grenada and the Grenadines as restaurants are not always close by.

Half board: It the same as Full Board, except we supply half the lunches and dinners. This gives you plenty of opportunities to discover the local restaurants. This is a great option in the USVI and BVI.

Captain only. Nothing is included except for the boat and the good services of the Captain. You are in charge of provisioning for your stay: food, wine, alcohol, beer. We provide the linens for the beds, the towels, snorkeling gear. You do the cooking, you do the dishes, you top up the water and diesel tanks. I am sure it's a good solutions for some. If your spouse is the one who cooks, make sure to run this by her/him for his opinion!

It is hard to do better than a crewed sailing yacht vacation in the Caribbean. All the pieces of a magic puzzle come together. The beauty of the islands, the sailing conditions, the weather, the water, the food, the bays in which to anchor, the natural wonders, the sea creatures, the food – did we mention the food? What else can we say? Oh yes!! The boat and the crew! We would love to have you aboard Beagle Knot on your next vacation.

Beagle Knot is a Lagoon 380 catamaran built in 2003 out of fiberglass, it is 38 ft (11,5m) long and 21 ft (6,4m) wide. The trampoline, the salon, the cockpit and the galley are about on the same level, up. The bedrooms (cabins) and the bathrooms (heads) are down in the hulls. Catamarans are very stable and don’t rock too much at anchor.

Beagle Knot can accommodate a couple very comfortably, (Queen size bed, own bathroom) or two couples, or a couple with two children. The second couple – or the children – will share a slightly smaller bed (Queen size at the head but narrower at the feet) and will share with the first two persons the above mentioned bathroom.

The social life happens in the cockpit and in the saloon. Both are large enough for at least six adults.

YOUR CREW. Denis and LaDonna, a husband and wife team, have one goal: for you to have a great vacation.

Denis grew up in France where he started sailing when about 12. In the 70’s and early 80s, competitive sailing was his consuming passion. In 1982 he finished 2nd at the 5o5 French championship in the bay of Mount St. Michel, and 21st at the 5o5 World championship in Cork, Ireland.

Forward twenty years and in 1999, Denis introduced LaDonna to the pleasures of sailing on Kentucky Lake. The next year LaDonna and Denis went on their honeymoon to the British Virgin Islands and had the time of their life. LaDonna loved the sailing and over the next years Denis and LaDonna went on frequent sailing trips and visited the Los Angeles area islands, the San Juan islands north west of Seattle, the Florida Keys, Grenada and of course, the Virgin Islands.

The next logical step was to live full time on a boat. This happened in early 2013, LaDonna and Denis purchased Beagle Knot and refitted it to make it ready for you to visit.

Denis has certification in Coastal and Celestial Navigations and holds a US Coast Guard Captain’s license.

LaDonna is an Intensive Care Nurse, a fabulous organizer, first mate and cook. LaDonna is extremely knowledgeable in sea life and an excellent snorkeling guide. Her collection of sea creature photographs is impressive. Some call her the turtle whisperer.

Have the vacation YOU choose. From sunbathing, reading, stargazing on the trampolines at night to hiking, sailing, swimming, snorkeling or paddle boarding, the list of activities is very broad. We love to cook. Eating aboard is very relaxing but there are some really great restaurants and fun beach bars to explore too. The on-land scene runs the gamut from listening to live music, enjoying a family-friendly full moon party at Trellis Bay to people watching – or playing - at some of the wilder places.

If you enjoy scuba diving or want to learn we can arrange this with a local scuba-diving operator. Shopping on St Thomas is a sport all of its own that many enjoy - and not just women. Because this is a duty free island, it is well-known for jewelry, liquor, beauty products, perfumes and electronics. There is also the possibility of big game fishing which also needs to be arranged with a local operator.

The sailing here in the Virgin Islands is fantastic. The trade winds blow steadily and with so many islands to explore you can choose between long relaxing sails and short hops.

Because Beagle Knot is a catamaran we don’t “heel” or tilt to one side while sailing and at anchor the boat doesn’t roll around as much as a monohull. Do you want to learn how to sail? Denis will be happy to teach you.

About Denis Oudard, Captain

Denis and LaDonna, a husband and wife team, have one goal: for you to have a great vacation on board of our boat Beagle Knot.

In the winter (mid Nov - end of Apr) we are in the Virgin Islands. In the summer we move out of the 'hurricane belt'. We go to Grenada (direct flights from Miami) with the Tobago Cays within couple of easy day sails.

Denis Oudard, Captain purchased this yacht in 2012

Why Denis Oudard, Captain chose US Virgin Islands

The purchase of this boat was a long term goal of ours and we had fixed ourselves a deadline. Which worked out really great. On the day of the deadline, we sold our house, and started on our new adventure on the high seas.

What makes this yacht unique

Spending your vacation with us on Beagle Knot will be a unique experience. No more expensive than crowded cruise ships, we offer you a fantastic level of service and mobility. You decide where you want to go (within the constraint of a sailing vessel) and we show you the nooks and crannies we have discovered over more than 15 years cruising these grounds.

We call it 'low brow pampering'.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Notes:
We offer three classes of service. Captain only, Full board and Half board. Captain only. (which is what is priced on VRBO) With this solution, you get the boat and the service of the crew, the captain’s mostly, but the 1st mate cannot help helping. However, you are responsible for the provisioning, the food, the booze, the water, the permits, the preparation of the meals. Whether on board or on land, you are responsible for the captain’s meal as well. (We often stay on board). At the end of your stay you top up the gas and water tanks. Full board. Full board crewed charter includes all your meals on board. You can still go to shore for some lunches or some dinners, but if you think you may want to eat all your meals on board, this is the tariff you need to start with. Half board crewed charter includes all your breakfasts, 3 dinners and 4 lunches. (7 day basis) It enables you to enjoy the wide variety of restaurants in the cruising area and go out on the town.

Simply Outstanding!

  • 5 of 5

Truly, we cannot say enough good things about the week we shared with LaDonna and Denis aboard the Beagle Knot in the US Virgins. Everything was professional, from initial contact, through itinerary planning, payment and the actual vacation. They are wonderful hosts, and took care with our dietary restrictions. The boat is in great condition and very comfy. On the water, they found anchorages that were quiet and off the beaten track, with never more than a boat or 2 around us, however on most nights we were completely alone. They took us snorkeling in unique places, again away from all the usual touristy places, yet safe and always with an abundance of sea life to discover. Would highly recommend to anyone, and we are hoping to enjoy another week sometime in the future. Tim and Joy

Incredible views, great food & super relaxing staying!

  • 4 of 5

Everything was as planned! The knowledge of the Captain Denis & the amazing cooking skills of LaDonna made our honeymoon unforgettable.

We have to admit sailing was not our best, but Denis managed the itinerary to make us feel comfortable without loosing the great thrills, beaches and views.

The condition of the ship is excellent, everything was super clean and perfectly maintaned. Same with paddleboards & snorkelling equipments.

Both worked hard to delight us everytime...We had a great stay!!!

Fifth Anniversary Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our hosts Denis and LaDonna could not have been nicer to us. They were most knowledgeable about all things pertinent to the sailing vacation, were most accommodating, and were easy to converse with. Delicious meals were provided. They knew where to snorkel and were great guides. Visits to the Bubbly Pool, Caves, and The Baths were most enjoyable. Joan required an escort from The Baths to the vessel because of rough current and along came both Denis and LaDonna to serve as life preservers. They made sure that we had transportation to the vessel when we arrived to St. Thomas and when the time came to leave they "discharged" us close to the airport rather than at the marina. The cat was very clean and spacious enough for the two of us. We spent time on the comfortable bean bags just relaxing and sight seeing. Thanks to Denis for the astronomy information! Although we are not big consumers of alcoholic beverages it was noted that "top shelf" brands were available. Just an example of their desire to be perfect hosts. We highly recommend the Beagle Knot and wonderful crew. You will not be disappointed!

Amazing Vacation

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we met Denis and LaDonna it was clear that I and my four friends were in for a great vacation. The boat is beautiful and they keep everything in perfect working order. The quarters are clean and quite roomy considering it is a 38 foot boat. There is no set agenda. We took each day as it came with a small planning session each day to consider what the next day will bring. We brought some ideas and Denis and LaDonna filled in the rest. One in our group needed extra help getting in and out of the boat and they were kind and supportive of his needs. Our safety and enjoyment was their full time concern. I woke every morning finding Denis manning the French Press making great coffee and later LaDonna would make a great breakfast individually for all of us. LaDonna is a great chef in a small kitchen (galley). We sailed, snorkeled, explored islands, hiked, swam, beached, relaxed, paddle boarded, watched the stars, and became more relaxed with each passing day. The boat is their home and they made us feel like honored guests. Denis and LaDonna are interesting and fun people and I enjoyed our time hanging out with them talking about everything. I had my vacation of a lifetime, and so did my friends. Thanks again to Denis and LaDonna.

The best

  • 5 of 5

What can I say about our time on The Beagle Knot other than it was a once and a life time experience. My wife and I were looking for a unique experience for our honeymoon and could not be happier with our deicsion to sail the BVI's. The boat was perfect for the two of us where we had more than enough room and never felt cramped. There is so much to do and see! LaDonna and Denis know all the great spots and make sure you get to all of them. How about the food? We thought we would eat on shore the majority of the trip, but once we had LaDonna's Garlic shrimp we were sold. Her food was incredible and best of all she took the time to type up the recipes and send them our way. My wife and I both agree that the best part of the trip was the crew. Think about that? We were in the most beautiful/relaxing place in the world and our biggest take away was how great LaDonna and Denis were! I cannot recommend them more and look forward to seeing them again soon!
