Wonderful place to stay with a great view and fantastic to relax. We've really enjoyed to stay there and maybe one day we'll be back. Small house but everything's there you need.

Very beautiful and quiet place!

The road to the house is very steep and narrow, but we were there very satisfied and we are thinking about the return next year.

A perfectly relaxing escape

  • 5 of 5

This property is absolute heaven and probably my favourite place I have ever stayed. It is well equipped and has the most amazing garden overlooking the sea and banana plantations. There are no immediate neighbours so you have perfect peace and quiet and you can walk down to a very quiet pebbled beach in about five minutes. We were even lucky enough to spot dolphins from the garden one morning.

You can walk to the nearest town (Madalena do Mar) via a closed road which takes about 10 minutes - it doesn't have a shop though and the restaurant choices are limited so I'd recommend this property for people planning to have a car and to do some self catering (the BBQ is excellent!).

Altogether an amazing and relaxing spot in Madeira that is perfect for a peaceful holiday and well located for some of the excellent levada walks.

Car: necessary

The village of Arco da Calheta is situated on the south west coast of Madeira, about half an hour’s drive from Funchal. The south west coast has the most sun and the least rain on the island.

EasyJet fly most days from Gatwick, Stansted, Bristol and Lisbon , TAP most days from Gatwick and the holiday charter firms fly from lots of airports around the UK although these flights are mostly just on a Monday.

We recommend a hire-car and to collect it on arrival at the airport.

The house has access for cars, but for someone who has experience in driving, we do not encourage motor traffic on the section linking the regional road and the house (they are about 200m), it is very steep and on a rock.

Calheta is fast becoming the most popular town on the South coast. It has the most interesting marina which is full of privately owned boats and yachts. Many of these offer trips out for dolphin and whale spotting, trips to the Desertas Islands, deep sea fishing and lots more. Along the side of the marina are may snack bars and restaurants where the atmosphere is electric and you mingle with the locals and tourists alike. In the evenings even live entertainment can be enjoyed. Just some minutes walk away is a protected golden sandy beach which runs very gradually into the warm blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean and ideal place for young children to dig on the beach and paddle or swim in the water. There is a large well stocked supermarket which serves all the needs of the self catering client and a bank with instant access machines. In Calheta town is ‘Casas das Mudas’ an international art centre. Madeira is a year round plant lovers paradise and has some not to be missed attractions at the Botanical Gardens in Funchal and the gardens at Palheiro.

There are walks available of all grades.
