About Sally Colwell
I was born and raised in Maryland, right outside Washington DC, and studied environmental science at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR. I came to Hawaii to work on an organic farm for the summer and couldn't bear to leave, and have been here for eight years now. My husband, Allan, grew up here and has a deep connection to the island. He is carpenter, landscaper, fisherman, and general jack-of-all-trades. We live in the caretaker house (with a separate yard and driveway) on the property with our two daughters.

Part of the ‘ohana
This place is such a warm, inviting—home away from home. Our host Sally has a beautiful home and treated us with such genuine aloha that it reminded me of my childhood and we left feeling like a part of the family. Everyone was definitely content, relaxed and happy with our stay. I cannot wait until next year and hope to be back again soon.
Wonderful Family Time at Red Gate
Red Gate was a very comfortable property to relax in after a busy day experiencing the Big Island. My husband and I travelled here with 5 young adults. There was lots of space in the house to spread out and have some peace and quiet ( on the front porch or in the screened in back porch) or to hang out as a group in the dining living room areas. The sunset views over the ocean were spectacular every night. What we did not expect, was how well stocked the beach gear was. There were beach towels, snorkelling equipment, water shoes, and chairs. The yard was very private and very lush with many different fruit trees. It was a beautiful spot to spend time. Resident cat Andy checked in on us every night, which we loved. The driveway is a bit tricky to get out of at night, as the traffic on the highway seemed constant. We had to inch our way out to make sure the way was clear. We would highly recommend this unique home to future travellers.
Great place to stay!
We really enjoyed our stay here. We had 2 families of four and there was plenty of room for everyone. Clean property. There were lots of amenities we took advantage of- the coolers, beach towels, snorkel gear, boogie boards- things you need at the beach but can’t bring along with you to Hawaii. Great communication and Sally even showed our girls what fruits we could eat( the bananas and lychee-yummy). We lived sitting out on the lanai in the mornings drinking coffee. Awesome experience.
A Great Stay!
A charming old home set in a beautiful garden. Our family enjoyed our stay here - thank you Sally and Allan!
Wonderful time in paradise
Mahalo nui loa to Sally & Allen . We had a wonderful time in Red Gate. Thank you very much for your hospitality, kindness and helpfulness. We had everything we need and more... The house is very luxurious, the garden is full of beautiful flowers, trees and tropical fruits. And it was amazing to listen to the cookie frogs and tropical birds. The best concert I ever had! Greetings to Andy & Paddyfoot. Mahalo nui loa for everything <3
Stunning, spacious home with wonderful caretakers!
My annual work trip to the Big Island was truly a success in part to our stay at Red Gate. My crew and I were able to rest peacefully after long days of work. The kitchen was gorgeous and well stocked, the dining room and living room were beautiful for large groups, the bedrooms were quiet, clean and comfortable. Wonderful plantation home with window screens throughout that allowed for cool breezes at night after long warm days. Loved the morning breakfast nook too! Listening to tropical birds and frogs and chickens while you have some toast is the best.
The grounds are also stunning. Sally and her family are so generous and accommodating to anything we needed while also dropping off fresh eggs from their chickens and apple bananas before our long shoot days! We will most certainly be back!
