Time has changed many things, but not the beauty of the Kings River area. The River still tumbles clear and pure over the rocks. Several smaller water falls lead the way to the largest fall known as 'Kings River Falls.' The old grist mill, known as Chimney Mill, once stood where Kings River Falls is located. Here the water cascades over the rocks into a pool of clear blue-green water. This is an ideal location for those who love to hike and see the 'beauty of the wilderness.' Kings River Falls area is a hiker's paradise.

About Jerry and Joan Johnson

We both grew up in this area. Both families' ancestors came to this area in the late 1800 and early 1900s. We retired from our job about 2 years ago. My husband retired from trucking and I from teaching. We finished building our cabin in October 2014. We wanted something to help supplement our retirement years and allow others to enjoy the beauty and quietness of the area.

Jerry and Joan Johnson purchased this cabin in 2008

Why Jerry and Joan Johnson chose Witter

My husband and I inherited this land from my step-mother and dad after their deaths. My step-mother lived on this place for 62 years--10 years as a widower. She and my dad lived here together for 22 years. This piece of land has a lot of historical ties to this part of the area. This area has long been visited by many who loved to hike and see the natural beauty of the wilderness area--relatively untouched by man.

What makes this cabin unique

Chimney Mill Cabin is located by the historical, old homestead known as the Squire Burton Williams Homeplace. Looking out from the wrap-around porch, you can see the old house and cemetery, which is the resting place for many who helped settle this rugged area of Madison County.

We have added several items to the cabin that makes it a unique and special place--the old Kings River Falls sign that used to be at the old parking lot (a head board for the bed upstairs), old gate from the garden spot (headboard in the green room), old barn wood (used for kitchen cabinets and island) from the old barn that once stood where the cabin is today, the old kitchen sink and white cabinet was my grandmother's and the fireplace mantle was a hewed log from the old barn. The porch swing also has special meaning--retirement gift from my coworkers, when I retired from teaching. As you can see, this cabin has a lot of unique features that makes it a special place for our family.

Come here to relax and soak in hospitality

We absolutely loved this cabin! It was perfect for relaxing and enjoying the nature around the cabin. We look a lot of pictures and walked to the falls. Make sure you have everything you need before getting to the cabin because you won’t want to make the trek back to civilization to get groceries. It is a long way from no where, but very much worth the drive! I highly recommend this property and the owners were delightful to work with.

A little piece of paradise away the hustle and bustle

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved staying here! Three families (two with young children) stayed here, and there was plenty of room for everyone to spread out! The property was absolutely beautiful, and definitely worth waking up early to watch the sunrise on the porch! Plenty of flat mowed land for the kids to run around in. And they hike to the falls was wonderful! Can't recommend this place enough.

The huge dining table was great for our large family so that we all got to eat together. And most importantly, no wifi and no cell service! This was the break from technology we needed in this fast paced world we live in.

A couple of things not listed in their "what is provided" list, it looks like other guests have left spices and condiments over time. So you may not need to include this in your grocery shopping list unless you're specifically needing something. Also, there was a pack n play already in the cabin. Again, not sure if this is the owner's or if someone left it, but definitely inquire about it beforehand if you're needing one!

Thank you for a wonderful stay, and we are recommending you to our friends who need to get away!

A few times in life your expectations are wildly exceeded. We were apprehensive about finding the place, but made it there without a mistake thanks to the good written directions. The house had everything we needed. It was central to all of our sightseeing. Absolutely gorgeous and we are definitely coming back

Chimney Mill Cabin is located close to the community of Boston. Five important rivers have their origin within a stone's throw--White, War Eagle, Little Mulberry, Kings and Buffalo. It is located in the southeast part of Madison County on Arkansas 16 that for 40 miles traverses 'the roof of the Ozarks' whose average elevation is 2300 feet. The ridge along which the highway goes separates the basins of the White and Arkansas rivers. Here are found magic scenery and the genuine Ozarks of yesteryear.

Within a few hundred feet of the cabin, sets the historical home of Squire Williams, who migrated from Kentucky on horseback in 1829. In 1868, Squire Williams began to hew the logs for the dream house he had long cherished in his mind. He also cut its chimney stones to precision measurements. The home is not far from the bluff that served as home for Williams family from 1865-1868. Williams also built a grist meal powered by water on the river and ground grain for settlers for miles around. Be sure and look for the indentions in the rocks that shows where mill sat when visiting Kings River Falls--this was the site of the grist mill owned by Mr. Williams. This was once known as Chimney Mill Pond (this is where the name of the cabin came from).

The cabin is within seeing distance to the Arkansas National Heritage Commission area of Kings River Falls. The hiking trail to Kings River Falls is approximately 1.8 miles round trip and relatively flat, easy hike, so it's good for families too. Upon arriving at the falls, you will notice a small stream that comes in from the upper side of the river. Be sure and follow this little creek upstream a bit, to enjoy a series of waterfalls that come down off the top hill. When the water is high , it definitely worth your time to check it out.

Kings River Falls is also located near some popular areas such as: Hawksbill Crag, Glory Hole, Lost Valley, Ponca area for viewing elk and the Buffalo River. This would definitely be a place for someone who loves the outdoors and all the beauty untouched by man.
