About Pat Roclaw and Harry Lang

The current owner has opened up the property to birders & other naturalists interested in hiking & exploring the natural wonders of the grounds following in the tradition of the former owner "Doc" Potter, local beloved veterinarian.

Pat Roclaw and Harry Lang purchased this farmhouse in 2003

Why Pat Roclaw and Harry Lang chose Salem

Originally, in the 1800's, the entire 100 acres was farmed. In the 1920's, a stream bisecting the farmland was overrun by beavers, who dammed the stream causing it to overflow into the surrounding area.

In the 1970's, the naturalist owner, Doc Potter, a veterinarian, took this flooding as an opportunity to create a wetlands. Today, this beautiful marsh is home to the Great blue herons, kingfishers, mallards, otters & white-tailed deer. Milkweed, cat-of-nine tails, thistle (nijer) & many species of grasses are abundant.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The peace, quiet and serenity of the property. An old farmhouse, dating back to 1794, having only 5 owners yet, with all the updates of a 21st century home & not located on a main thoroughfare.

Double thumbs up!!!

  • 5 of 5

My family (wife and 10 and 9 yr old) spent 4 wonderful days over the President Day weekend. Because we made a late decision to go skiing; we ended up renting in Salem NY. But what a blessing. The 45 minute car ride to Bromley Mt wasn’t as bad as I expected; basically four turns and you arrive at the mountain. The pictures of the house and property are accurate but they don’t tell the true story. The views at breakfast was like a postcard (the beauty of nature; mountains with wild life and only a couple hundred of feel from the main road). Also, my kids had an awesome time sledding in the snow on the property. Walking up to the “Look Out” shed is quite the workout but riding down the property was a BLAST (the property is listed to be approx. 100 acres) … double thumbs up!!!!

Great for family vacation

  • 4 of 5

The house is large and comfortable - our family of five had plenty of room to spread out but also wonderful places to gather. We wished the temperatures would have allowed us to spend more time snowshoeing on the property - it is very beautiful. Host was very responsive.

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

My brother and I returned for our second annual get together. Everything was as nice and comfortable as I remembered. The grounds and scenery are beautiful. I love the country, rural setting which is still only a short ride to all the amenities you need. I especially like going into Manchester VT and visiting the Orvis store and outlet. This year, I bought some nice boots I wore while exploring the coverts. The new caretaker, Phillis, was very friendly and helpful.

A True Gem tucked away with all the beauty you wish!

  • 5 of 5

As is the case with all VRBO rentals, you are always taking a bit of a leap of faith, but you read reviews to better your decision. The most recent that appeared on this rental, was a negative comment from the previous renter. Let me tell you, the review could not have been more wrong. From the moment we inquired, Pat was extremely helpful in ALL aspects, questions, etc. no matter how big or small the question. Once we decided to book, it was as if we received VIP concierge treatment. She even offered on several occasions due to a pending storm, to arrive a day early, free of charge! She emailed things to do, suggestions and many other things to make sure our family got the most of our experience. The pictures truly do this historic home no justice. From the moment we pulled into the driveway, we new we had picked a true gem. The grounds, the house, the layout. All of it is beautiful, serene, peaceful and any other comparable adjective you want to insert. The home is extremely cozy. Not small at all and extremely accomodating. The beautiful fireplace in the family room was our favorite as well as breakfast in the kitchen area which overlooks a beautiful landscape of the lake, lots of snow, all the birds coming to feed. Our kids got to enjoy a great day sledding right in the back yard as well. Plenty of good spots sledding, snowman making and a great snow ball fight! We hiked the grounds quite a bit and make the walk up to the observation cabin. The scenery was amazing. We will upload pictures to our review when we return.

The town of Greenwhich is a very short drive away . We also took the drive to Dorset and Manchester VT, which was a short 30 minute drive, but extremely scenic.

Our only negative? That we couldnt stay longer as kids had to get back to school. But, we will definitely come back to Pat and Bob's place for another family get away. Truly loved their hospitality as well as their beautiful home!

Simply a bizarre and unexplainable situation. A beautiful house starved for care

  • 1 of 5

Let me start by saying that we have stayed on over 15 VRBO homes since 2009. In that time I have never written a negative review. Here I'm not sure how to start, with the events that happened or how we were treated by the owner and caretaker.

When we arrived we found dog poop in one of the bedrooms, the thermostat broken and the house around 50 degrees.

We cleaned the poop, replaced the batteries and tried to warm the home. The wood burning stove was wonderful. The main fireplace in the living room was another story.

We opened the damper and started a fire. For the first few seconds it was fine and then the smoke filled the room. We immediately called the caretaker who came and tried to start a fire in the same way we did with the same unfortunate result!

He informed us that the house had been empty for a while and that no one informed him of our arrival. He felt that the chimney was clogged on top by animal or ice. He alarm promised to return in the morning and inspect from the room. This inspection never came.

The next day we heard a crash of something in the chimney and then water dripping down.

We lit a perfect fire with a proper draft. This was not only a missed opportunity by the owner but a dangerous situation.

We tried to contacted the owner almost daily since New Year's Eve and was just contacted Tuesday and told their chimney sweep determined it was our fault. This is preposterous. Even if there was a shadow of a doubt, their caretaker verified our "technique" that same evening.

This is nothing short of them shrugging off their responsibility

Not only this!

In our first text to them back in November we informed them that we had a lab, they then sent us an invoice thru the site which we paid in full.

Not only have the homeowners not given a credit for our troubles. They stole $200.00 of our deposit for "pet cleaning". Can u imagine this especially since the caretaker has a dog and there was "beautiful evidence" of this upon our arrival!

We are thoroughly aggravated by the situation. They have a beautiful home. All that is needed is better care and customer service.

I hope this review is helpful and the homeowners will take heed to the repercussions of their ill will

Owner's Response: Maybe an unexplainable situation can be explained as the allegations of a venegful, cheapskate visitor holding a resentment. When Mr Bruce S, aka "the fireplace guy" reserved our home for the New Year's Weekend (commonly celebrated w/heavy drinking) we initially had a hard time getting him to pay the 2nd half of his deposit. After 2 auto reminders from VRBO, we sent him a message asking him if he was still interested. Mr BS responded by paying along w/sending us a scarcastic smiley face. We thought that was uncalled for. We had a premenition he might be trouble. If he has rented 15 VRBO residences, he should be familiar w/VRBO payment policies. We should not have to beg him to pay. As well, he was not honest & did not check off "pet fee" when reserving. In subsequent pre-arrival VRBO emails, he revealed he was bringing a dog. We realized he was trying to cheat us out of our pet fee & decided to deduct it from his refundable deposit. As to the "fresh" dog poop, what other dog was present? Our "caretaker" is a tenant who rents an apt. adjoining our house. Since we leave prior to guests arrival, we post his phone number for questions/problems guests may have. He turned on the 3 thermostats prior to Mr BS arrival. When Mr BS arrived, he called me & said the downstairs heat was comfortable but, the upstairs thermostat was blinking & the temperature was 58 degrees not 50. We mutually agreed it must be dead batteries & he would pick some up, since he had to leave to pick his wife up at the supermarket & liquor store. My last words to him were "Remember to open the flue, when you have a fire in the fireplace." He assured me he was a Boy Scout & knew how to light a fire. Approx 8 pm our tenant called informing us the living room was filled w/smoke & the cause was the flue had not been opened. He thought it best that since the guests had been drinking, to inform them that they should try again the next night & this time to open the flue first. Mr BS texted me the next day asking for a 1 night credit since he could not enjoy a fire. Mr BS posted this review the same day he received his deposit back minus our pet fee. The VRBO home sharing concept is based on trust & honesty. Unfortunately, sometimes one rents to guests who scam the system. We rented our primary residence to strangers, trusting they would take care of our house as they would their own. Now, we are left with the cost of cleaning our living room furnishings &walls of smoke damage.
