About Fern MacMillan

The Vintage Beach House at Sagamore Terrace is owned by family. It was build in 1940 as a summer cottage and later winterized and upgraded to an all year round residence. The original extended family continues to visit and use the house on a regular basis.

Fern MacMillan purchased this house in 1940

Why Fern MacMillan chose Westbrook Center

This home and beach has been enjoyed by four generations.

What makes this house unique

The front of the house faces a large open green space. The walkway to the beach cuts down the middle. Therefore traffic is behind the house and provides a large safe area that is quiet and rural. There is very little traffic and therefore provides a great place for walking or running. All residential in nature and provides beautiful views of Long Island Sound to and from the beach and neighboring streets.

Marvelous house for a family with many adult members

  • 5 of 5

Gathering family from various parts of the country is never simple, but Fern's house proved to be a wonderful place where we could gather folks for casual coffee mornings, evening games and walks down to the beach - all in Dec! Having 4 bedrooms, 2 with Queen beds, one double, and bunkbeds allowed for adults, and adult children to have suitable space for sleeping in comfort. With both a smaller kitchen table and larger dining table in separate areas we even managed to accommodate 16 for drop in visiting. The kitchen was well-equipped for larger groups and my West Coast family was charmed by the clever closets built into the knotty pine walls. The sun porch and the central grassy area leading through the community to the beach appears to be a prime area for summer and warmer weather fun and easy to set up a croquet game or other family fun. Another tidbit - while this is not a house for a handicapped person, my mother who uses a walker was able with help to climb the few steps and enjoy some family time there as well. With only 2 small bathrooms we had to coordinate the timing of 6 showers on a few occasions but were able to manage satisfactorily. The thick binder of information was helpful in some of our decision making. Some locally published historical accounts of the area and the families originally developing this small planned community proved fascinating and added to our appreciation. As we spent most of our time with family in the Chester area we didn't have much time for exploring Westbrook and Old Saybrook but both looked like charming towns. I highly recommend this house and hope to visit in summer some time. Thanks Fern for your advance information as well.

Peaceful, quiet, and rustic

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at the beach house with my two young boys and two older parents. Everyone enjoyed the house immensely. There is a huge expanse of grass behind the house where my boys played, and the beach is probably only 100 yards away, accessible by a flat, paved trail. Pine-paneled walls inside help create a rustic, vacation home feel. There are four bedrooms and two bathrooms so lots of room. We had a lovely long weekend here.

Property was a nice cottage with very good location steps from the calm LI Sound

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was well stocked and plenty of fresh blueberries for breakfast and dessert on the bushes outside. The calm beach was great for my young kids who could easily float around with other family members without big waves to worry about. Lots of fun for the whole family. Felt a little dark with all the paneling, but otherwise a great summer family vacation.
