About Mandy & Steve Pearce
What a great move, we came to the Isle of Wight in 1995. We have enjoyed raising our four boys in this rural location & happily they still love it here too. One of them now lives in the cottage attached to Barn End. We have an in-depth knowledge of the Island & enjoy all the local facilities, giving us plenty of information to pass on. We are keen cyclists (both road and mountain bike) and ‘The Isle of Wight is one of the top ten destinations in the world for cycling.’ according to Lonely Planet We are also avid walkers, sailors and swimmers in open water and the pool. Steve's mad on catamaran dinghy sailing; we all enjoy water sports.
Mandy & Steve Pearce purchased this Cottage in 1973
Why Mandy & Steve Pearce chose Calbourne
Location, Location, Location! Picture yourself in the hot tub. It's a low light pollution area with very little traffic noise and you're just looking up just enjoying the stars (bring your star gazing map!) first to spot a satellite! There are more than 2000 up there. It's a good idea to bring your dressing gown for the exit tub moment! Being located at the bottom of the downs there is easy access to the cycle and walk ways to Newport (or Freshwater). These then link up with the rest of the Island access paths. Visit Isle of Wight : ‘The Island has 70 miles of coastal path, 500 miles of footpaths and 200 miles of cycle routes to explore.’ It's still within 10 minutes of Freshwater (by car) with the local Sports Centre (inc. pool, gym & plenty of exercise classes), supermarkets, little shops (butcher, baker & fishmonger), library, cafe's etc. Yarmouth is to the north (10 minutes by car) offering a selection of pubs & restaurants, shops and cafes, the pier, a castle & the harbour. Newport is perhaps 15-20 minutes east, offering a larger shopping experience, cinema etc. Locally there is horse riding, paragliding, canoeing, sailing, surfing (the famous Compton beach is just a couple of miles away), paddle boarding, wind surfing, kite surfing, walking, cycling, swimming, Alpaca trekking, golf courses, one is a 10 hole, 3 par and the other a testing 18 hole links course up on the downs, overlooking Freshwater Bay. Plus there's heaps more to do, including the more gentle activities like yoga, pilates, building sand castles or just sitting in the garden and reading The friendly owners are only a phone call away

Another wonderful holiday.
This was our 4th stay at Barn End, our home from home, and we loved it as much as ever. Mandy and Steve are fantastic hosts, welcoming and full of advice about places to visit. The property, with it's period features and quality fittings was as comfortable as ever. The hot tub and large enclosed garden make it perfect for our entire family. We've already booked for next year!!
Great cottage in lovely quiet location
5 of us settled happily into Barn End following a lovely welcome from Mandy including Easter chocolate as well as a huge cake and wine. The cottage is comforable and cosy, with a sunny garden and peaceful surroundings. We particularly liked the log burner, hot tub and games room. Having two bathrooms was also very useful. Mandy and Steve were very generous with the share of their beach hut and kayaks at the perfect Colwell Bay. Steve even took one of the boys out sailing from the beach! Many thanks for having us and we hope to see you again soon.
Cozy, characterful, well equipped
Cozy and clean, fantastic location, lovely owners, everything you could ever need on holiday.
Lovely cottage and host. Hope to come back.
The cottage ticked all the boxes for us (3 adults) but the twin and single bedrooms are rather small with low head room. They would be a bit of a squeeze for more adults though children should be OK. Mandy was friendly and helpful. The hot tub, swing seat and beach hut were a real bonus for us.
The Isle of Wight (new to us) was lovely and we enjoyed the beaches (including a Needles RIB boat ride), the steam train and the alpaca farm. We weren't impressed by the Needles attraction itself and merely using the carpark and walking through it to gain access to the Alum Bay beach and boat trip and to access the bus to the Needles battery.
We were exceptionally lucky with the weather (beginning of September) so wet weather activities weren't required but we didn't notice many options for that.
Fabulous holiday accommodation
This was the perfect place for our family: we all loved having the hot tub, the garden was great for the children and the dog, and the airy central living area was lovely. Mandy was extremely welcoming and everything we needed was provided, with thoughtful touches such as an extra fridge, games to play on rainy days, and cake and wine on arrival. There's plenty to do in the area but would recommend booking a fossil walk with Island Gems at the nearby (dog-friendly) beach at Brook as this was one of our holiday highlights. Oh and the cafe next door does a wonderful caramel cheesecake (according to my son!).
A very comfortable and welcoming cottage in a delightful area
We thoroughly enjoyed our week's stay at Barn End and found the cottage very welcoming, extremely well equipped and with comfortable beds and furniture making it one of the best self-catering places we have stayed at - and we've stayed at many over the last 40 years.
It was particularly convenient for exploring the western half of the IoW with its good beaches, local walks in an AONB and other attractions only a short drive away. Also lots of opportunities for exercising our dog - and ourselves.
Would love to come here again here.

The Tennyson Trail is a short walk from Barn End allowing access to walking/hiking and cycling either toward Newport or Freshwater Bay/The Needles. Giving access to the Freshwater Bay Golf Course.
Barn End is in the grounds of Chessell Pottery which offers ceramic painting and award winning Cream Teas, coffee, cakes and light lunches.
Ideal for walking and cycling holidays straight from the property. There are 200 miles of cycle routes to explore on the Island.
Colwell Bay shop rent out both kayaks and paddle boards, definitely worth exploring!
