Casa Luna Roja is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath, private home with a private pool. We offer WiFi throughout the house. It is our private home, not a condo or townhouse. The house is a modern two story concrete house of 1800 square feet interior space with an ample private pool in the backyard that includes a patio and charcoal grill. The entire property is surrounded by a high wall for privacy and security.

Our master bedroom and bath are located up a winding stark-white staircase. The master has a king size bed with built in closet, a programmable security safe suitable for a 15 inch laptop, air conditioning and ceiling fan. The master bath has double sinks, toilet, a huge tub and separate shower. The master bedroom overlooks a terrace towards the front of the house that is perfect for watching the sun rise or for practicing yoga. The opposite bedroom wall features windows the length of the wall and it overlooks the pool below and the jungle in the distance. A second rooftop terrace overlooks the pool.

Downstairs are two bedrooms. Bedroom 2 features a king size bed, and a built in closet complete with a programmable security safe large enough to fit a 15 inch laptop, air conditioning and ceiling fan. This bedroom opens to the second bathroom. The second bathroom is equipped with a shower, sink and toilet. That bathroom also opens to the hallway across from Bedroom 3,. The third bedroom is equipped with two double beds, a built in closet, air conditioning and ceiling fan.

The living room, kitchen and dining area are open concept. The living area has two couches and an HD, flat screen television equipped with SkyTv (dish TV) and Netflix. The kitchen is fully equipped and opens to the dining area.

The pool and backyard are visible from the entire inside living area. A rock patio overlooks the pool and tropical plants. The large tree adjacent to the pool with the X marks on it is a Sapote tree. This is a tree that has been 'tapped' in the past to harvest a resin used to make chewing gum (Chicle). The ancient Maya considered this a sacred tree.

We are located in a residential area of Tulum, within walking distance of the diverse restaurants and funky shops of Tulum.

We are 2.5 miles from the beautiful beaches of Tulum and about the same distance from the Mayan ruins of Tulum. Other Mayan ruins in close proximity include Muyil, which is approximately 20 minutes away, and Coba which is approximately 40 minutes away. The Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza are 95 miles away from Tulum.

There are many other outdoor attractions close by. Numerous cenotes ring the Tulum area, with Cenote Dos Ojos and the Gran Cenote two of the more popular choices near Tulum. Two 'eco water parks,' Xel Ha and Xcaret are located between Cancun and Tulum, with Xel Ha being only approximately 10 minutes north of Tulum.

The beaches in Tulum are beautiful, with many hotels offering a 'beach club' where you can enjoy their facilities for the day for the price of a drink or meal. Public beaches are also available and beautiful and some of these located on the north portion of the beach also provide views of the ruins of Tulum from the beach.

About Carlos Solis

We are a family of four. I was born in Yucatan, and have lived in the US since I was a child. I am an archaeologist that works in the Greater and Lesser Antilles and the Southeastern USA. My wife was born and raised in the USA and is a geologist. My wife and I met in college, married and have two children, who are now grown and happy to have a family vacation home in Tulum! Our primary home is in South Florida.

Why Carlos Solis chose Tulum

Since I am originally from Yucatan and still have family here, we have always traveled to the area. We brought our children to Tulum when they were little and we have continued to travel to the area for 30 years. When we started looking for a vacation home, we traveled from Cancun south to Mahajual, Xcalak, and the Belize border and back, looking at properties and felt that the funky, bohemian nature of Tulum was for us. The residents tend to be young and free spirited.

We looked at various houses before picking this house to purchase. We wanted a free standing home, not a townhouse or condo and we liked the La Veleta neighborhood, as it offers a mix of both locals and expats.

You see small commercial businesses in the area, and people riding their bikes to school or to work. The neighborhood wasn't like the condo and apartment complexes that we saw that tended to be mostly empty during the week and then flooded with loud tourists on the weekend.

The house itself we liked mainly because of the floor plan that is open and overlooks the private pool outside. As of now, we have no neighbors on either side of our property,so the feeling is almost jungle-like when you look from the roof to the distance. We have a large chicozapote tree in the backyard. You will notice large X scars on the tree. These scars are where the tree has been 'tapped' for the resin that is used to make chewing gum (chicle). These trees have been used for their gum since Mayan times. We also have many birds that visit the property. We feel like it is a special place and we love that we are so close to stores and restaurants.

What makes this house unique

Tulum is what the rest of the Riviera Maya used to be. It's a destination where you still hear the Maya language spoken, where the locals take pride in the natural environment. The town is bordered by the Maya ruins on the north and the biosphere of Sian Ka'an on the south, meaning that future development will always be limited in this part of the coast.

This is a town where you can see the walled city Maya ruins of Tulum, a site that was of major economic importance to the commerce of the entire Yucatan Peninsula and beyond in the late 13th century.

Most of the beach area is still 'off the grid' using only solar and/or wind power to generate electricity, and the building code limits the height of the buildings to 3 stories. Though only an hour and half away from the busy tourist destination of Cancun, it feels like another world.

Tulum sits on a karst platform, providing numerous nearby cenotes (sinks) and caves for you adventurous or passive enjoyment. The area also contains large expanses of protected habitats with a rich flora and fauna for you to explore and appreciate.

Not enough can be said as to the eclectic mix of the people from all over the world coming together to share in the unparalleled beauty, uniqueness and friendliness of Tulum. We hope that you have the opportunity to experience it as our most respected guest.

Easy and Comfortable

This was a great place for my family and I - kids, parents, and grandparent - to spend the week. The owners are very responsive, friendly, and helpful. The place is clean and comfortable. It's quiet and yet a short drive / bike to town and the beach.

An AMAZING place to stay in Tulum!!!

Our stay at Casa Luna Roja was nothing short of amazing. Really love the layout of this more modern home and all the floor to ceiling windows and sliding glass doors. The pool was great and the owner Carlos was so easy to work with and very on-point with having the groundskeeper Rosa and the realtor make sure we were well accomidated and having everything we needed. Highly recommend staying here and when you do, check out the coba ruins. There you can rent bikes for somewhere around 35 pesos and ride them from site to site through the jungle or get driven on a rickshaw if you prefer. In the same day trip to coba we checked out the spider monkeys at Punta Laguna wildlife refuge. Was so cool. This area has so much to explore, we could have used another week!! We'll hopefully be returning soon as our trip was too short!! Thanks again Carlos!! -Rob and Meghan Watsonville, Ca

Spacious and Peaceful Casa Luna Roja

Our stay at Casa Luna Roja exceeded our expectations. The house is clean, open and spacious, with great amenities. During our 10 days stay, the cleaners came once and the pool/garden cleaner, three times. Carlos was very helpful through the booking process and was easily accessible when we had questions. The location is a bit off the beaten track, but perfect for groups who are looking for a quiet and peaceful stay. There are a handful of good restaurants within a 10 min walk, and a compilation of helpful resources, provided by Carlos. We definitely recommend the house and plan to return in the future!

The house is beautiful. It's exactly as described. Feels very clean and new.

We had a great stay. Carlos helped us with any minute detail we needed. The house is comfortable and beautiful and very secure. The location is a bit of a walk from the central downtown area. The upside is the neighborhood feels a little more real. Bikes make the distance really small and manageable.
