Welcome to Flavigny-sur-Ozerain, winner of the most beautiful village in Burgundy! This walled hilltop medieval village is perfectly preserved, and looks as it did in the middle ages. The town was the setting for the movie, “Chocolat” with Juliette Binoche & Johnny Depp.

Flavigny is a charming town, with four places that serve lunch in town (at least two places are open every day in summer) and three places for dinner (usually at least two are open, but occasionally not). There is a small grocery store that is open every day except Mondays, a bakery with wonderful bread and pastries, a bar in town that serves light meals, and a brasserie that serves locally brewed beer and light meals just a short walk outside the walls of town in an old farm building.

Stroll the narrow, curved streets, walk the ramparts, and listen to the church bells chime the hour.

Part of our house dates from the 17th century, and the rest is from the 18th century and is situated at the end of the main street in town, right on the ramparts of the village, overlooking a peaceful valley with cows, sheep and grapevines dotting the hillsides.

Les Remparts is a 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath house, is approx. 2200 square feet and sleeps 6.

The house was featured on the HGTV television series, House Hunters International Renovations, where our creation of two full bathrooms, a WC, and a brand new kitchen in 2013 was filmed. This renovation is documented on the show, which is episode 4 of the House Hunters International Renovation series. The episode is also available on NetFlix (search "House Hunters International RENNOVATIONS France) and on iTunes.

There is more information on my LaMaisonRemparts page, which I cannot type out because they remove it. Use the standard beginning and ending to the name above, and you should find more information about the house, along with a floor plan and more photos.

The walled village of Flavigny-sur-Ozerain dates from the 11th century, with most of the houses built in the 15th & 16th century. The winding streets are lined with hollyhock flowers all summer and you can enjoy exploring the ramparts walk.

There are four restaurants--one true "farm-to-table" restaurant is open for lunch only, a French restaurant usually open for lunch and dinner on the patio or inside, a cafe inside the Anise Factory in their courtyard open for lunch, and a bar, the Maison George, that serves drinks and cheese & meat plates and barbecue, depending on the day of the week for lunch and dinner. The Vietnamese restaurant in town should be open most days during the summer. There is also a new beer brewery just outside of town that serves really nice beer locally brewed beer and snack plates.

This spacious house has beautiful meter-thick stone walls and was built in 1628 and 1775.

The house consists of the ground floor, with an airy lounge off the entry door, with a french door leading to stairs to the garden, a laundry room with a washer & dryer, a brand new bathroom with limestone tile, which includes a shower, toilet, sink and a sauna. On the ground floor there is also an eat-in, open plan kitchen (fridge, freezer, dishwasher, oven & induction cooktop) with a WC under the stairs and direct access to the garden. The Library Bedroom (bedroom 2) is also on the ground floor, with an en-suite bathroom with a rain shower, toilet and sink in an antique cabinet.

Then go up those curving stone steps in the kitchen to our Remparts Bedroom (bedroom 1) with a window seat opening on the view over the forest and valley, and a screened French door that opens to the garden . This room has a WC with sink, and a washroom with a soaking tub/rain shower, and a sink in an antique cabinet.

This floor also has our “Convent Bedroom” (bedroom 3) which has as one wall doors sourced from a 19th Century Convent and a full height screened French door opening onto the garden. The Convent bedroom can be made up either as twin beds or as a queen sized bed. Guests in this second-floor bedroom may use the ground floor WC/sink under the stairway that is just outside their bedroom door, and will have as their private bathroom the full bathroom on the ground floor next to the sauna.

Our large, delightful garden is full of climbing roses, lilies, lavender and hollyhocks. There is a koi pond with a curved bridge for peaceful contemplation, and tables and chairs for hors d’oeuvres and dinners al fresco!

There is a lovely covered pavilion in the garden, situated to take advantage of the view. Under the pavilion, enjoy sitting on the couches to enjoy coffee in the morning, or a glass of wine in the evening! The view over the rampart walls is unchanged since the middle ages—no modernity is visible!

In town is the famed Anis de Flavigny candy store, where the little licorice candies are created in an ancient abbey. They offer tours of their candy manufacturing operation and museum.

A 10 minute drive north takes you past the Flavigny Winery (tastings available) to the town of Veneray Les Laumes, with a large, well-stocked supermarket, a train station and many other shops and services. Twenty minutes away to the west is the medieval town of Semur-en-Auxois, with it’s beautiful stone towers and river.

Flavigny is a 3 hour drive from Paris or the airport, and is 25 minutes away from a TGV High-speed train station which can whisk you into Paris in one hour!

Flavigny is ideally located about an hour’s drive away from the charming cities of Dijon, and Beaune, and is within an hour’s drive of the Champagne and Chablis wine areas, and an hour and 15 minutes away from Côte de Nuits, and Côte de Beaune wine regions.

Come to Burgundy and share our little slice of paradise!

Fabulous stay in a medieval village
Firstly, let me say that Carolyn was wonderful with providing information, quick responses to questions and with very explicit details of how to get to and to the property. The property is a tastefully renovated village house in medieval Flavigny with a wonderful garden / dining setting allowing great views over the surrounding countryside. We were a party of four adults but the house can comfortably accommodate six. The bedrooms are spacious, bathrooms excellent and kitchen / living area is well equipped. Flavigny itself is a lovely village (it was used in all the outdoor shots for the film Chocolate) and is quite centrally situated . We enjoyed a great time visiting the major wine towns of Beaune, Dijon, and Chablis all within an hour's drive with other attractions such as Chateauneuf en Auxois, Ancy Lefranc and other chateaus closer by. There are a few cafe/restaurants in Flavigny and basic food shopping while nearby Veneray Les Laumes can provide all your needs for self catering. If you're lucky you might catch the baguette/croissant man in his little van driving through the village about 8am honking his horn to alert the locals. All in all, a lovely stay and impossible not to enjoy. Barry, Australia

Out of world

Charming village, charming home
The home in Flavigny is beautifully reconstructed and decorated. There is a very well equipped kitchen, comfortable bedrooms and baths and a lovely garden overlooking the countryside. It was very spacious for two couples with a koi pond as a bonus. We enjoyed feeding the fish! The location made it possible to explore the surrounding area . A car is a necessity. The village is wonderful with several good restaurants and of course the Anis factory of which it is renowned. We loved every minute and we’re sorry to have our trip end.

Wonderful holiday location
The house was delightful. It was well-appointed and comfortable, being kept cool.by the thick stone walls. The terrace was a lovely place to sit and relax. It felt very private yet it was a short walk to the local amenities. We enjoyed the bread and pastries from the bakery and the village shop was well stocked. We walked to the Flavigny brasserie and vineyard to sample the local beer and wine - we loved the rose. There was a lot to explore in the area and we had a wonderful week, thank you.

We have always loved France, and have traveled extensively in France throughout our married lives (40 years!). We were introduced to the village by American friends who have a house here, and we fell in love with it. We live in Laguna Beach, California, and have a grown daughter. We try to get to France 5 times a year.

Why they chose this property

We loved the garden and the view and the privacy. The house was pretty rough when we bought it, but we knew we could fix that (and did!).

What makes this property unique

We love our house because of the spaciousness and the view. Sitting under the pavilion with a glass of Burgundy wine and looking out over the valley, it seems like you've gone back in history. The view and the valley are unchanged from medieval times. The sense of history in a house built in 1775 is marvelous. We imagine all of the people who lived here in over the past, and how difficult their lives must have been, and are extra grateful for our cozy beds, bathrooms, heating and internet connection!!
