About this property

The Karoline: Old World Charm In A 2 Bedroom 2 Bath Beauty By The Charles Bridge

This newly renovated, fully-equipped 2-bed and 2-bath apartment with a living room able to be converted into a bedroom on the 1st floor(2nd floor US) of a historical neo-gothic building just around the corner from the Charles Bridge is for up to 8 guests, and at the same time caters to a smaller, more demanding group or family that wants to have Old World style but in a modern, functioning flat. There are three connecting rooms: the master bedroom with king-size bed(180 cm wide), the living room/sitting room with fireplace(bio-ethynol means real flames but no smoke), cable TV, and a large pull-out sofa, and then the large bedroom with two king-size beds. These rooms all have their own entry/exit doors, so privacy is not a problem. The large master bathroom has a tub/shower, toilet, his and her vanity sinks, and a washer and dryer concealed behind a decorative side panel. The second smaller bath if also fully equipped, with a small sink, shower, and toilet, and both have heated floors. Complementary WiFi works throughout the flat. The fully-equipped kitchen is perfect for making large meals, or even just for a coffee and small breakfast in the morning. Iron and ironing board, all towels and washcloths, and extra bedding are of course provided. Smoking is not permitted in the flat, but we have a small balcony which is perfect for that.
We think that you will appreciate the level of detail that Mark & Mirka put into the flat, from the choice of linens for the beds and selection of furnishings (we have two art nouveau chairs in the kitchen) to the extensive restoration of the ceiling décor and the matching chandeliers. We have really focused on trying to preserve and enhance as many elements from the original construction as possible.

Great stay
Great location we loved finding all the Little restaurants and bars in the back Streets near by. It was a pleasure to Come back to the apartment after a Full day out. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the apartment. We were 2 couples from Sydney.

We cannot praise this property enough. Central to everything but located in a quiet street with restaurants and cafes within walking distance. We were lucky to experience two beautiful snowy days spent wandering to come back to an apartment that was cosy and warm and comfortable. Mark was in contact everyday to answer any questions and the thoughtfulness of stocking the kitchen with some items made for an easy breakfast on our first morning. This property far exceeded our expectations and during our five week journey through Europe has certainly been the highlight. I would confidently recommend this property and will definitely be back.

The Perfect Praha Apartment
What an absolutely wonderful apartment to choose for your stay in Prague. There isn't a more perfect location, central and equidistant from all possible sites, museums and attractions in this very walkable city. The apartment itself is beautiful with that European feel; high ceilings, elaborate plaster moulding, wooden parquet floors. There is even a kerosene fireplace! The apartment is quite well equipped even for dining in. I had leisurely morning breakfasts before heading out. Of course I had a long stay of two weeks! The TV is set up to allow Netflix and other streaming apps. Having a washer/dryer was a Godsend on an extended stay. Mark is extreemly responsive and quite generous. I arrived to a fridge with some basics and his wife? baked some delicious goodies that were on the kitchen table. I would recommend "Taste of Prague", a comprehensive guide done by perhaps a dozen foreigners living in Prague. It's available on line and I found it a better resource than the guide books for just about everything. In short, if I could rate this rental 10 stars, I would! Thank you Mark for your fastidious attention to all the little details that made me so comfortable.

About the host

Hosted by Mark Grein

Host profile image
Mark Grein is originally from the U.S., but on a chance trip to Europe back in the nineties, he was enchanted by the magical allure of Prague and decided to set up shop here, right in the middle of central Europe not long after the Velvet Revolution. He and his wife Mirka are filmmakers, but decided to try their hand at renovation when they bought this beauty in the heart of the Old Town last year. They did much of the renovation work themselves, especially in restoring the original ceiling stucco decoration, spending many hours up on a ladder covered in wet plaster and paint, and with Mirka handmaking much of the decor, like the floral patterns on the fireplace mantle and cabinets.

Why they chose this property

We knew we had something special when we first set eyes on this diamond-in-the-rough. All of the doors in this residential building have wooden entrance doors or portals that are decorative pieces unto themselves. One inside the flat, we saw that the elaborate but faded ceiling decorations were just screaming to be restored, and the original owner had left many of the original details in this old place, such as doors, door handles, parquet floors, windows(including original glass in some of the windows-- look closely and you'll see the tell-tale 'waviness' in some of the panes). The layout was perfect--- three connected rooms, but all with their own entrances/exits, a large and separate kitchen, along with a small balcony. Located on the 1st floor of a neo-gothic buliding just around the corner from the famous Charles Bridge in the heart of the Old Town, but on a side pedestrian street, it just felt like the right place. We think you'll agree :)

What makes this property unique

As with all properties, 'genus loci' is the most important thing, and this flat has got it in large amounts. It is the perfect place to begin and end a walking tour of the beautiful city, and the quaint street has many great cafes, fantastic wine bars and restaurants, and even though it's close to the famous bridge, it's managed to hang to a lot of its local character.
