The Karoline: Old World Charm In A 3 Bedroom 2 Bath Beauty By The Charles Bridge

Bedrooms 2
Space 95 m²
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 2 - 5 nights

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 2 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

This newly renovated, fully-equipped 3-bed and 2-bath apartment on the 1st floor(2nd floor US) of a historical neo-gothic building just around the corner from the Charles Bridge is for up to 8 guests, and at the same time caters to a smaller, more demanding group or family that wants to have Old World style but in a modern, functioning flat. There are three connecting rooms: the master bedroom with king-size bed(180 cm wide), the living room/sitting room with fireplace(bio-ethynol means real flames but no smoke), cable TV, and a large pull-out sofa, and then the large bedroom with two king-size beds. These rooms all have their own entry/exit doors, so privacy is not a problem. The large master bathroom has a tub/shower, toilet, his and her vanity sinks, and a washer and dryer concealed behind a decorative side panel. The second smaller bath if also fully equipped, with a small sink, shower, and toilet, and both have heated floors. Complementary WiFi works throughout the flat. The fully-equipped kitchen is perfect for making large meals, or even just for a coffee and small breakfast in the morning. Iron and ironing board, all towels and washcloths, and extra bedding are of course provided. Smoking is not permitted in the flat, but we have a small balcony which is perfect for that.

We think that you will appreciate the level of detail that Mark & Mirka put into the flat, from the choice of linens for the beds and selection of furnishings (we have two art nouveau chairs in the kitchen) to the extensive restoration of the ceiling décor and the matching chandeliers. We have really focused on trying to preserve and enhance as many elements from the original construction as possible.

About Mark Grein

Mark Grein is originally from the U.S., but on a chance trip to Europe back in the nineties, he was enchanted by the magical allure of Prague and decided to set up shop here, right in the middle of central Europe not long after the Velvet Revolution. He and his wife Mirka are filmmakers, but decided to try their hand at renovation when they bought this beauty in the heart of the Old Town last year. They did much of the renovation work themselves, especially in restoring the original ceiling stucco decoration, spending many hours up on a ladder covered in wet plaster and paint.

Mark Grein purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Mark Grein chose Old Town

We knew we had something special when we first set eyes on this diamond-in-the-rough. All of the doors in this residential building have wooden entrance doors or portals that are decorative pieces unto themselves. One inside the flat, we saw that the elaborate but faded ceiling decorations were just screaming to be restored, and the original owner had left many of the original details in this old place, such as doors, door handles, parquet floors, windows(including original glass in some of the windows-- look closely and you'll see the tell-tale 'waviness' in some of the panes). The layout was perfect--- three connected rooms, but all with their own entrances/exits, a large and separate kitchen, along with a small balcony. Located on the 1st floor of a neo-gothic buliding just around the corner from the famous Charles Bridge in the heart of the Old Town, but on a side pedestrian street, it just felt like the right place. We think you'll agree :)

What makes this apartment unique

As with all properties, 'genus loci' is the most important thing, and this flat has got it in large amounts. It is the perfect place to begin and end a walking tour of the beautiful city, and the quaint street has many great cafes, fantastic wine bars and restaurants, and even though it's close to the famous bridge, it's managed to hang to a lot of its local character.

Well equipped apartment, perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in this apartment. The location was perfect, right by the river and Old Town, so we were able to walk most places. It was easy to sneak home for a toes-up in the afternoon, and then head out again after a quick rest. The apartment itself is decorated beautifully, and is bright with lots of windows. It is quiet, with no noise heard at night. We appreciated that along with the washer there is a clothes dryer, not often found in European rentals. We also appreciated the welcome nibbles offered at checkin, as we were hungry from our train trip! We would definitely stay here again when we return to Prague, and highly recommend it!

Gorgeous property in perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED our stay in this apartment. Everything was perfect. The apartment was immaculate. Despite being in an historic building, the bathrooms were renovated and updated to modern standards. The beds were comfy, ample fans were provided, the kitchen was fully equipped with everything you could need, Detergent was provided, etc. Mark offered to arrange a cab from the airport, and our check in was as smooth as possible. We were given a map and lots of tips about things to see and do. Overall, this was a perfect stay. I would highly recommend to anyone and I will definitely stay again when I return to Prague.

Beautiful, Comfortable, and perfect location

  • 5 of 5

A great location for our visit in Prague. We were greeted by Klara with a yummy surprise and a beautiful apartment.

Mark made it easy from the moment we greeted our driver to the day we left. Prague is really looks like a fairytale setting. The list of restaurants were great and recommending Marketa's tours was the cherry on the cake. We were well taken care of by Tereza on our tours. She is soooo knowledgable. It was too short of a stay but one my family will never forget. The foliage was amazing with Cherry Trees blossoming everywhere, as well as apple and pear trees. Weather outstanding! Loved our stay! Thank you for everything.

Great location, great hosts, great stay!

  • 5 of 5

Mark made it very easy to book our stay and arranged an airport pick-up for us. The apartment was stocked with wine, beer, orange juice, milk, cheese, bread, etc. upon our arrival It was great to have some basics in the apartment during our stay. The apartment was beautiful and in a good location, walkable to everything. Klara meet us at check in and gave us a good overview of the city and recommendations to nearby restaurants. Our party of five was very comfortable in the apartment. It was nice to have the second bathroom and shower, even if it was very small. We left a smalll ring behind. Mark let us know that we left it right away and agreed to ship it back to the us. I highly recommend the apartment for a family or small group traveling together.
