About this property

Distinctive farmhouse on a hillside with panoramic views over volcanic landscape

Our holiday home in the tiny rural hamlet of Groslier is the ultimate getaway. A converted farmhouse, the property commands stunning views across the beautiful landscape of the Auvergne. It’s a perfect base for exploring this wild and beautiful part of France: nature is on your doorstep so you don't need to go far to experience the impressive array of flora and fauna on offer. There are numerous towns and villages to explore, many with impressive Medieval and Romanseque architecture. The Auvergnats are proud of their culture, so there are plenty of fairs, musical events, shows and exhibitions to choose from. Restaurants in the area offer a superb cuisine based on wonderful local meats and cheeses, and for the adventurous there's a cafe renowned throughout France for its lunches of frogs' legs! The house is in a popular area for walking and cycling and is not far from picturesque lakes for boating and swimming.
The house is spacious and well equipped, with the living space on the first floor to take best advantage of the fabulous views. There are three bedrooms, two double rooms on the ground floor, sharing a bathroom, and a large family room on the second floor with its own bathroom. The first floor is a light open plan living space with a fully fitted kitchen, comfortable lounge with log burning stove and dining area.
The property benefits from WiFi, UK FreeView and French TNT Sat TV, electric radiators in every room, dishwasher, washing machine and cooling fans.
The house is surrounded by two acres of land, mostly laid to meadow. There is a terrace with patio furniture and a barbecue for guests to use. Access to the house is via a fairly steep drive, but there is ample parking for multiple vehicles. The house is at a fairly high altitude of 1,100m in a very rural area up a winding country lane - ideal for more adventurous cyclists!

Wundervolle naturnahe Lage

Great house with a view
Very cute et clean house lost on the middle of Auvergne. Amazing view from the garden. I recommend this place for calm (the only neighbors are cows), hiking and to visit this beautifull region.

Merci à Lucy pour sa souplesse dans les dates et pour ses infos bien utiles! Le lieu a été très apprécié et les environs également, même si nous avons beaucoup pris la voiture.

About the host

Originally from Blackburn, Lancashire, I now live near Bedford with my husband. I work as a business valuer in a large accountancy firm. I am a keen viola player, and my viola travels to Groslier with me whenever I come. I serenade the cows while my husband goes off on his bike around the local roads...

Why they chose this property

I visited the Auvergne with my parents when I was a teenager, and loved the area. After getting married I brought my husband back here and he loved it too. We bought the house in 2004 (in retresopect, rather foolishly!), when it was nothing more than a derelict shell with no connected electricity or running water. We embarked on a fairly tortuous renovation project (it's tricky when you are mostly in another country!), eventually completing the basic works by 2007. By 2010 it was - at last - all decorated and ready for its first season of rental.
My husband and I love coming here, to get away from the hustle and bustle of home life and enjoy the fresh air and countryside. We enjoy walks and visiting the local shops and restaurants, and my husband gets out on his bike whenever he can.

What makes this property unique

Without a doubt the view is the defining feature of this house. We never tire of it, and with the seasons and the weather it constantly changes. It's lovely to sit outside with a glass of something and watch the buzzards and kites spiral overhead during the day, or spot the bats leaving our barn to go hunting at dusk. Inside, we've made it cosy and comfortable, and on a wet day I like nothing more than to curl up on the sofa with a good book!
