Beautiful 1 Bedroom Guest Home in the Escalante Canyon

Bedrooms 1
Space 65 m²
Property type house

About the property

1 Bedroom Guest House on 40 acres in the Escalante Canyon

This property is part of a 160 acre private in holding in the heart of

The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, seated halfway

between Bryce Canyon National Park and Capitol Reef National Park.

Located where Scenic Highway 12 ('The Golden Loop') crosses the

Escalante River, it is the hiking trail head to the renowned Escalante

Canyons. The main home (see vrbo 228445) and guest house are the

only structures on the last 40 acres downriver before 75 miles of

wilderness area that runs all the way to Lake Powell.

This getaway is a quaint 2 story 1 bedroom, 1 bath river front guest

home that is perfect for two. The 700 sq. ft. home faces views of the

Escalante Canyon, meadows, cliffs, and river and sits in a lush

riparian oasis surrounded by 600 ft. sandstone cliffs. The guest house

faces away from the main house 600 ft. away, so as to maximize

privacy. Hike from the front door to first class scenic wonders.

Magnificent views can be seen from the living/dining area, and from

the fully equipped kitchen that has granite counter tops, cherry wood

cabinets, and stainless steel appliances. The master bedroom with a

king bed is on the 2nd floor. The bedroom and 6x12 balcony have

beautiful meadow and red rock canyon views. The shower is an oval

glass mosaic tile walk in, no doors needed, with a colorful, local

river pebble floor. The walls of the home are plastered with the

beautiful red canyon sand. The home has excellent wi-fi and no TV. A

high clearance vehicle is preferable for the concreted low-water river

crossing (generally 1 ft. deep).

About Katie Howland 2

About the owners Doug, Miranda, and Katie Howland: Doug is a 35-year designer/builder who built this beautiful home. His youngest daughter Katie lives in Portland with her older sister Miranda. After a career in the arts, Katie now manages the family’s properties. They built the house over a 7-year period in the late 90’s, commuting 7 hours each way from their home in Arizona. Doug now migrate between their properties in Arizona, Utah, and Hawaii. They like to hike, horseback ride, ski, practice yoga, whitewater raft, dance, and travel in their free time.

They also have vacation rentals in the town of Sedona in Northern Arizona and on the North Shore of Kauai.

Katie Howland 2 purchased this house in 1993

Why Katie Howland 2 chose Boulder

Doug came across this property in the early '90s. They fell in love with it not only for its beauty, but also because it is both accessible and secluded, with the Escalante River flowing through it.

What makes this house unique

There are many amazing natural wonders right out the front door and within an hour's drive (see above). Look for deer and wild turkey in the meadow in the mornings and evenings and watch the cloud shadows change over the canyon walls. Head up or down the canyon into rugged wilderness, and return home to comfort.

Best location to explore area

  • 5 of 5

We spent 7 nights in the guesthouse over Christmas. The house is perfectly situated for hikes in the Escalante-Boulder canyons. The house was comfortable and clean. The canyon views from every room were amazing. Truly a spectacular place to stay, thank you Katie!

This is the Perfect Out of the Way Vacation cabin!

  • 5 of 5

WOW!! First I have to say that your property is wonderful. We had a bit of a time crossing the creek the first time, but we had your directions for creek crossing printed out and the suggestions worked perfectly! When we got to the house we just parked and walked around the house and surroundings for about 5 minutes just in awe of the canyon. The house is beautiful and well thought out. I love the Labradorite pieces in the counter (we are rock and fossil people!) and the layout of the place is great!! Walking around of the grounds took us a day and a half, and we found some great rocks within sight of the house. To future guests, If you are looking for a house surrounded by the red rocks that is isolated and wonderful, stay here!! Don't bother adding a TV, the wifi works great and the views of the mountains and the stars are much better without the distractions! The property is well stocked, clean and well maintained. My wife scours these boards looking for places just like this! They have things that you won't need to pack, like aluminum foil, relish and paper towels! We were super close to Escalante the town, and Grand Staircase, as well as Capital Reef, and Hole in the Rock road. The only negative was that we didn't want to leave!

Thanks so much!

A perfect retreat

  • 5 of 5

We spent five days in this retreat in late October. Although all the leaves had fallen from the trees by then, it provided an even more spectacular view of the surrounding cliffs in this peaceful canyon. Down a good dirt road and across the creek (which was not a problem) led us to this cozy home. It had everything we needed - a well stocked kitchen, comfortable bed, a good shower and amazing internet for such a location. Located approximately halfway between Escalante and Boulder City and the Burr Trail, this was a great choice to serve as our base for exploring the surrounding area.

Fantastic place to stay for couples

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Escalante Canyon home for three nights, and had a fantastic time there. The home is amazing, beautifully built and tastefully appointed. This isn't just a rental space; it's truly a home.

I should mention the spectacular setting: few places on earth are as pretty as the Escalante river canyon. The location is just minutes by car from some remarkable places and some exceptional hikes. With few people or services within miles, the home is a great place for self-sufficient travelers to comfortably prepare their own meals and enjoy the solitude.

We had a truly glorious stay there, and look forward to returning.

Absolutely wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

This property took our vacation to the next level. There are so many windows it's as though you are outside, one with nature. We stayed in late October and the trees were glowing gold. Gorgeous! The property is in the canyon floor, amongst the trees. People were looking down from Kiva Coffee House admiring the beautiful view below, which includes this property! (It is not visible from the coffee house, it is nicely tucked away and private) It was so nice to have a fire in the morning, cook a hearty breakfast and then go out to explore the area. Even from bed there are endless night sky views, the stars seem to go on forever. There are even red rock views from the amazing shower! Everything we could need or want was provided, including kindling and wood for the fire. The house was clean and cozy, the owners very easy to work with. It is evident this home was crafted with a love of nature and of the area, the home and its location were stunning. It was the most relaxing and peaceful place we have ever stayed. We would highly recommend this property and hope to return in the future. Thank you for hosting us and sharing this slice of heaven!
