About LaVonne Garcia

I grew up on the Iron Range and spent my high school years living in Ely. I feel a strong connection here and love spending time with family and friends.

My late husband and I spent most of our adult working years in Minneapolis where Dan worked in advertising at Brown and Bigelow and I as an R.N. at Mt. Sinai and later Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park. I am currently retired.

LaVonne Garcia purchased this cabin in 1985

Why LaVonne Garcia chose Ely

We spent most of our weekends and vacation time in Ely with family in our early married years so when the opportunity to buy our own place came up, we knew we wanted to be on Eagle's Nest Lake 2. The lake is clean and clear and fishing is good. You are more likely to see pontoons than speed boats.

What makes this cabin unique

I love our lake home because it private but not remote. The two porches are great for relaxing and enjoying observing birds and wildlife on the lakeshore and lake. Bearhead State Park is just down the road with many hiking trails, and great swimming beach. On rainy days, enjoy visiting the International Wolf Center, Bear Center, the Soudan State Park underground mine or numerous shops and restaurants in the Ely area.

Home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week full of low key family time. Cabin was completely - and I mean completely - stocked. Thank you for all the extras!

Great place to get away!

  • 5 of 5

This is a great place to stay if you want to get away to a nice quiet lake! The water is clear and very nice for swimming. LaVonne greeted us when we arrived and showed us around - very nice. There is everything you need for the week, two refrigerators so plenty of room to bring your food for the week, all linens, everything you need for cooking, lawn chairs and beach towels. Kayaks and paddle boat where fun and there are plenty of "floaties" for the water. We didn't catch much for fish, unfortunately, but did find wild blueberries! So had fresh blueberries, blue berry pancakes and blue berry smoothies - so good! Lots to do in nearby towns if you want to go for a drive. It's a very quiet lake, we met the neighbors, the were very nice. All around great time and would highly recommend it!

A relaxing vacation in a beautiful cabin with a million dollar view

  • 5 of 5

The cabin overlooks the lake & is very close to the waters edge providing a million dollar view of the crystal clear water. It is so relaxing sitting in the screened in area listening to the songs of the loons on the lake. One day a cow moose & her calf swam across the lake only a 100 yards in front of the cabin. We caught Walleye, Northern, Large & Small Mouthed Bass & had several fish fryes during the week. We also packaged & brought home fish to enjoy as well.

The cabin is well maintained & is stocked with all needed items in the kitchen & bath rooms. We were a day late getting into the cabin due to the severe storms that toppled trees blocking roads & falling on power lines where there was no power. LaVonne did an awesome job getting the cabin ready for our arrival as soon as the power was restored & the roads open.

We had such a wonderful time & enjoyed staying in this beautiful cabin that we have booked our vacation for next year and are anxious to return to the peace & solitude you experience while staying in this cabin.

We enjoyed the cabin greatly. We had a lovely stay. We were comfortable the whole week. Lavonne was a gracious host and met us the first day to show us the cabin and surroundings. The view of lake from cabin is outstanding. We will stay here again.

Bearhead State Park
Car: necessary

Eagle's Nest Lake 2 is located between Tower and Ely, Mn just off Highway 169. Lake 1 and 2 are connected by a channel allowing use of both lakes. It is a clear water lake and is home to walleye, northern pike, bass and pan fish. This is a lake you will be more likely to see pontoons than speedboats. Kayaking is popular here. Bearhead State Park is just up the road and has many hiking trails, a great swimming beach and picnic area. It is common to see eagles, deer, beaver, and occasional black bears in the area.

On rainy days, you may want to visit the Soudan State Park underground mine for their historical or physics lab tour. There is also the International Wolf Center and the Bear Center near by. There are many good restaurants and shops to enjoy in Ely. Also, local museums will show you Ely's mining history. Visit historical Burntside Lodge and enjoy a pontoon tour with local guide. There is much to keep you busy in the Ely area.
