Traditional local three store family house, from early nineteenth century, with a garden facing south, two balconies and a patio. You have all the attractions of the city center in a walking distance but still, have your own private house. There is a kitchen, washroom, sitting room, piano room and dining area on the first floor, with direct access to the patio and the garden. On the second floor, there are two bedrooms, one quite big with a worktable and a big screen to plug your computer in. Both rooms have comfortable 120 cm beds. On the 2ond floor, there is also a toilet in a separate cabin, and a bathroom with a very good shower. On the 2ond floor is a big balcony facing the garden.
The master bedroom is on the third floor (the loft). It is very big and bright, with a small balcony facing the garden.
We love sailing and have an old wooden boat, harbored in Sweden during the winter. During spring, summer, and autumn we go out sailing for longer periods. During that time we offer our home in Iceland to people who like to travel, just like we do, for them to enjoy the comfort we offer and the vivid life of Reykjavik.
We stayed at this home for our entire week in Iceland and it afforded us a great location for all of our day trips. The three story home was very nice and well appointed. It's proximity to the center of Reykjavik can't be beat.
Our limited concerns were: 1) owners want you to pay outside of VRBO....so you would not have VRBO guarantees. It worked out for us, but did give us pause as they wanted us to pay by wire. We brought cash instead to protect everyone. 2) The home was clean, but it didn't appear that the bed linens had been changed....so we stripped the beds and put in clean sheets. 3) As noted earlier, the location was perfect....except for Friday and Saturday night when we were awakened by loud intoxicated people walking down our street.
Beautiful family home stocked with everything you could possibly need for an enjoyable stay in Iceland. Centrally located 15-20 minutes walk to almost anywhere. Kitchen completely equipped with more than you'll ever need. Beautiful outdoor space.
This is truly a family home, complete with family photos, mementos of trips and events. You will feel almost a part of the family.
This was by far the easiest rental I've had on Homeaway. Quick, efficient and thorough. Excellent people to deal with. Will rent again without hesitation if we return to Iceland.
Thank you Tinna and Ester.
My family and I stayed here for 9 days in August. There is a lot about this house to recommend. First there is the location. It is located barely a two minute walk from the shopping street Laugurvegur with all the shops and restaurants. Turn left and you are a minute from good places to eat like Block Burger or Nudluskalin. Turn right and you are a minute from the amazing bakery Braud & Co. Not one but two Bonus supermarkets are within a few minutes. You couldn't ask for a better location.
Second, you have your own parking spot in the form of a little driveway. In the center of Reykjavik, no hassle parking. That's hard to beat.
The house itself is amazing. On the first floor is a kitchen, a living room, and a music room. Everything is decorated in a cool, eclectic style I delighted in the entire time we were there. The owners are an actress and a musician and memorabilia and posters from their careers are all over the walls. The second floor is reached via a wooden spiral staircase which is a work of art itself. On the second floor you have the bathroom and two bedrooms. If you are traveling with kids, this is where they can stay in comfort. On the third floor is the master bedroom with a TV and its own balcony. All three floors have balconies overlooking the backyard (yes, there is a small backyard) and you can see the Hallgrimskirkja from it.
So this house has it all. Only two things to consider: Wifi was spotty but I highly recommend getting the portable router when you rent a car and that provides reliable internet. The other thing is that you should insist on advance communication on how to access the house upon arrival. You will be emailed a code which allows you to get a key from a secure box around back. That's fine, but we didn't know that. We arrived expecting someone to be there and didn't know we had just received an email mere hours before arrival (the email account wasn't refreshing for whatever reason). So we were sitting there wondering how to get in. My wife left a message on the owner's cell and she called us back and the misunderstanding was cleared up but we had to wait over an hour confused and wondering what was wrong. Insist they email you the code the day before you arrive so you can get right in. Be sure you get all of this straight beforehand and your stay will be perfect. Despite that misstep, I am happy to give the house five stars. It was that amazing.
Charming historic/authentic house right downtown - with a parking spot! Lovely, warm, cozy home with a great shower! It is right downtown -so it can be a little noisy- but such a great location and well cared for home, it's worth it. It's exactly as described by the owner.
The house is on a residential street but very close to the main shopping and restaurant area. We were able to walk to everything in town and it was not difficult to get to the highways for day trips out of the city. The house itself is quite large, with two large bedrooms and one smaller one, a large living room plus a den, and a large bathroom. The garden was beautiful but unfortunately the weather (even in July!) was not conducive to sitting outside. The only drawback is that an apartment building is being constructed very close by so you do hear some construction noise during the day. A final point- the house has it is own driveway which we really appreciated because parking is tight in the city.
It was wonderful to be able to stay in this stunning home. What made it so enjoyable was the fact that the decor and all the beautiful photos and artwork made it feel like a proper home.
The location made the experience even better. I have previously stayed at various properties and this was by far the best! Slight downside - no black out blinds so bring eye shades in summer and only one toilet but would not let that stop me returning there!
Warning to anyone wanting to travel to Iceland - it has become very expensive due to the fall in the Pound and a strong Krona so be warned!!
From the airport there is a flight bus going to the bus terminal in connection with all flights. From the bur terminal there it is a five minutes drive by taxi to the house. If you rent a car at the airport, follow the signs to Reykjavik city center. Grettisgata is easy to find, it is the street above Laugarvegur, the main shopping street.
There are excellent restaurants all around or in a walking distance from the house, with good food at moderate prices. Small shops and local bars are the asset of the area, as well as galleries, museums, cinemas. Live music and theatre can easily be found at a walking distance, at Harpa the music hall, and other venues in the center. Out door swimming pools are numerous in the city and there are golf courses around the City(18 holes).
