About Linda McDonough

Our family went on houseboat vacations cruising the Mississippi river and skiing at Chestnut Mountain Resort when we were growing up. We loved the area so much my parents looked at property to buy in the Galena area. The first piece of property they purchased was in 1966. The cabin was eventually built in 1983.

Linda McDonough purchased this cabin in 1983

Why Linda McDonough chose Illinois

Our parents built a cabin for guests and family to stay in when they visited. After they passed away, we decided to rent the cabin out 5 months out of the year. We haven enjoyed vacationing there for many years and would like to share it with others.

Great family getaway - private time on beautiful property while still close to fun places

  • 4 of 5

Simple family fun on the private lake! Fishing, swimming, relaxing, and more just 2-3 hours from home. Cabin is comfy with enough amenities to feel at home. Hard to believe you can wind down that dirt road, hit the lake and forget the rest of the world so easily. When you want to step back into society, Galena area is just 15 mins away. Deer, owls, cranes, turtles, etc all over. Just sit and watch.

Great property, great location, great time.

Great private cabin retreat

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our 5 day stay. Perfect place for our family of 5 with 3 young kids. Cabin and lake were great. Everything we wanted in a lake vacation.

Quiet little cabin with so much to do

  • 4 of 5

Our family of four had a great time at this cabin on the lake. The view was beautiful and we saw lots of wildlife everyday (deer, turtles, frogs and even a raccoon). The canoe and paddle boat were perfect for getting a closer view of the far ends of the lake. The water was so clear that you could see the fish swimming in the shallower areas. The kids really liked the sandy beach and the boat house was well equipped with sand toys and life jackets. The kitchen was also extremely well equipped - we were able to find everything we needed. Not surprisingly there were a lot of bugs out there, so make sure to bring plenty of bug spray. Also, if you get a rainy day, or just need to get out of the house for awhile, I would recommend the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque, Iowa. The kids really liked touching and feeding the Stingrays, as well as watching the River Otters and Crocodile. Thanks for the great experience!

My Three Sons

  • 5 of 5

Spent 3 nights at the cabin, and have already discussed with owner to return the same weekend next year. The privacy, lake access, quality of lake water, swimming, boating, and fishing were exactly what I was looking for my 10 and 7 year old grandsons and 30 year old son. The cabin was comfortable for sleeping but especially for relaxing, cooking and enjoying meals. The Apline Slide at Chestnut Mountain, only 10 minutes from the cabin, was the highlight for the grandsons. Gelena is 20 minutes away for shopping, restaurants, minature golf, etc. If you are looking for a remote, picturesque, relaxing rental this cabin fits the bill.

A great retreat

  • 5 of 5

The cabin is a little hidden gem. Fishing was good as well. The lake is overpopulated with fish. We could dozens of bass, they were just all 10"-12" long. If you like to catch fish, you will have a blast. If you are looking for a trophy you won't find it in this lake. It needs to be fished with some proper conservation techniques. The lake is crystal clear and I can only assume spring feed. We had a wonderful and peaceful stay. The gas grill was a great touch. Not having to worry about bringing fuel, as the propane was provided, was just great. We will be back when the weather is warmer.
