The house and garden at Uchacq is amazing! We spent two blissful weeks here. Véronique and Didier have created something really special. They were there to welcome us to their home when we arrived, and despite the language differences, they gave us a warm and comprehensive introduction to the place. The house is beautiful, spacious, and remained cool in the hot weather. The bedrooms are big and airy, with generously sized and comfy beds and each with en suite bathroom. The kitchen has everything we needed and is well stocked with cooking equipment and tableware for big groups.
But in the summer, it really is the garden that steals the show. The house is surrounded by a vast space, completely closed off from the rest of the world, that has been beautifully tended to. The sun swings round the house throughout the day so there is always a place to either soak it up, or enjoy delicious dappled shade under the mature trees. As two families with young children, it was an adventure playground, and there is lots provided for games like ping pong and badminton. Needless to say, most time was spent in and around the pool! And you can really settle for the day there as they have a beautiful pool house which provides cool shade and a bar inside, as well as a shaded veranda with space to lounge or eat a meal that you’ve cooked on the big gas griddle/plancha.
Véro and Didier were such generous hosts, and had clearly put a lot of work into their immaculate garden. We had fresh eggs from the chickens every day and, were told we could help ourselves to fresh produce from the vegetable garden. Véronique even brought us fresh bread one morning.
Beyond the property is farmland and pine forests, and there are lots of tracks for walking or running, accessible directly from the garden. Further afield, it is a quiet area, but if you are prepared for a longer drive the coast is not too far and there are some nice places to visit if you know where to go. I would recommend doing some research before you go.
Thank you so much Véronique and Didier (and Matthieu for the translation!), we loved our stay and we were so sad to leave. You are great hosts!
