If you need to decompress and get back to nature- this is it! In the evening, sit on the dock and listen to the loons. Be transported to another time. Other available activities include: hiking on The Border Route Trail, kayaking, canoeing, ATVing, and getting lost in yourself. The canoe and kayak are included for free with your stay.

What makes this cabin unique

There are very few lakes which directly abut a federally protected wilderness- this is one of them. McFarland Lake borders the 1 million acre Boundary Waters Wilderness. From the dock you can literally paddle right into the wilderness via two access points: John Lake, and Pine Lake. There is also the famed Border Route Hiking Trail, which lies out the back door. Take a hike along the high bluffs that comprise this part of Minnesota. You can see for miles into the wilderness and beyond...

Relaxing, secluded get away

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time relaxing in this clean and cozy cabin. The stars at night are incredible, and there was easy access to many hiking trails. The pontoon rental was fun, and we enjoyed using the canoes and kayak.

Very nice lake home to spend ten days!

  • 5 of 5

Very beautiful lake and lake home to spend our vacation. We enjoyed use of the pontoon boat and used it extensively. Very clean cabin and we did our best to keep it that way when we left. Had a couple days of cool and rainy weather. That did not stop us. We spent part of a day in Grand Marais and part of a day in Grand Portage. Made good use of the internet and television while we were the there. Most all of the conveniences of home. Hopefully we can stay again soon. Greg and Robin Carlson

Perfect relaxing retreat

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at the cabin. It was the perfect get away. The cabin is remote and off the grid but with all the comforts of home. We enjoyed the use of the kayak and the canoe. I would highly recommend renting the pontoon along with the cabin. I would also recommend a truck or a SUV for the drive to the cabin. Wifi and satellite TV kept our teenagers content. We were glad to be able to bring our husky who really enjoyed herself as well. We loved being at the cabin so much we did not explore the area as much as we intended because we didn't want to leave!

Great summer vacation spot

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time enjoying the lake with the pontoon, kayak and canoes. Swimming was great with the clean and clear water. The fire pit and sauna were a great way to end the day. Also enjoyed hiking on the Border Route Trail. The cabin was fabulous. Everything exceeded our expectations.

McFarland Lake lies at the end of the Arrowhead Trail. This is a semi-remote location! Your nearest shopping is 19 miles away in Hovland. Full Services are available in Grand Marais- 40 miles away. The last 17 miles to McFarland Lake are via a county maintained gravel road. Passenger cars and low clearance vehicles are not recommended, an SUV would be better. Something like a Suburban would be perfect. The last two miles are snowed in during winter months. Check conditions with owner.
