Venetian Tower in the heart of the ancient island city of Trogir.

Photos and Description of this Trogir holiday castle

Self-catering 2 bed, 2 bath, sleeps up to 6, air-con, historic building.

The Venetian Tower is located in the heart of the old island city of Trogir on the Dalmatian coast. Every corner of this UNESCO World Heritage city is within a few minutes walk including the old stone mainland bridge, the bridge to Island Ciovo, many good restaurants, cafes, bars, art galleries, shops and St. Lawrence Cathedral Square where live music is played most evenings. Due to the narrow polished stone streets cars are restricted to one road.

Centrally located Trogir, 'The Stone Beauty', is within easy reach of Island Hvar, Brac, Bol, Split; Krka waterfalls and many other local beauty spots. Opportunities include scuba diving, sailing, walking, mountain biking and water sports. Local beaches are within a few minutes walk. The 15th c Tower was built by Venetian traders and has been completely refurbished to a modern standard including air-con and luxury bathroom. The unique feature is the top floor quadruple aspect lounge with panoramic rooftop, mountain and sea views.

Getting there: Direct flight from UK to Split International Airport (Code SPU)

Croatian Airlines (Telephone:020 8563 0022) fly from London Heathrow all year.

Website address: We have much more information, photos, details and a booking form on our website. Please click on the link below marked 'Owner's website'.

Car hire.: Trogir is a walled city so, if you hired a car, you would have to park it outside the city walls. There is short term parking within a couple of minutes walk and long term parking about five minutes walk away. You will find much to occupy you within walking distance of the Tower including the beach. The bus station, with buses to Split and Sibenik that connect with the ferries to the islands, is less than five minutes walk. There is also a ferry from Trogir to the islands of Drvenik.

The main roads are good and the motorway is excellent but the country roads are often narrow and traffic can be heavy during the peak season. With this in mind consider not hiring a car immediately and see how you get on. You can always hire one for specific outings.

About Paul Newson

My wife and I run this small holiday business from our home office just outside Bath. We own all

the properties we let and that currently includes two cottages in beautiful Freshford near Bath; one

one bedroom cottage just outside Bath and The Old Museum in Looe, Cornwall and a Medieval Tower in Trogir, Croatia.

We have designed the business on our own experiences of travelling and staying in holiday

apartments. Here are our main principles:

• Be as responsive as possible to any email communication from the customer. We try to

answer all emails within the hour.

• Offer interesting, historic buildings in a beautiful and relaxing environment.

• Offer locations that work well without a car.

• Try to make the properties as close to a “home from home” as possible.

• Work hard to keep the standard of maintenance as high as possible.

• We pay a bonus to our housekeeper if the words “spotlessly clean” appear in a review.

• Make the business of booking as simple and straightforward as possible.

• Trust our guests.

• Provide enough information to enable guests to find the property easily.

• Make the check in as simple as possible.

• Provide a stress-free holiday from beginning to end.

Why Paul Newson chose Split

The Venetian Tower in Trogir was first renovated in 2003/4. Because of it's extreme age, more than 1000 years, it requires constant maintenance. The property is located in the heart of the UNESCO city island of Trogir, sometimes known as the Stone Beauty. The City is very small, virtually traffic free and reckoned to be one of the best examples of a Medieval town in Europe.

The Tower is for you if you:

Enjoy bathing in warm clean water.

Enjoy beach-side cafes.

Happy to go a little further to find an isolated beach.

Like staying in a quite building in the heart of things.

Enjoy visiting areas of outstanding natural beauty.

Enjoy visiting ancient Roman buildings.

Like to dine outside on the Riva within two minutes of home.

Enjoy people of super-yacht watching.

Are happy to leave the car behind.

Like to shop in markets.

Like to eat quality Italian style food and fresh fish.

Want the experience of staying in an ancient historic house.

The Tower is not for you if you:

Want sandy beaches. They rarely exist in Croatia.

Expect international cuisine.

Want to use a car and park it within site of the Tower.

Need a good WIFI connection.

Struggle with stairs.

What makes this castle unique

Enjoy your own Mediaeval Tower and be aware of a thousand years of history.

The top floor lounge has windows on all sides with views over the City, surrounding hills and a glimpse of the sea.

Minutes walk from all the shops, market, bars, restaurants, bus station, ferry terminal, taxi rank and Riva.

A walled city with no roads or traffic issue.

Minutes away from a choice of beaches.

Unique accommodation

  • 5 of 5

Superb place to stay, right in the heart of Trogir old town. Spotlessly clean and thoughtfully equipped it's hard to fault the Tower. The owners have thought of everything, including picnic sets, beach towels, DVDs... there is a real sense that the owners have provided exactly what they themselves would want in a holiday rental. Best of all is the attitude of the owners - there are no "house rules" and you are made to feel completely trusted, a refreshing and unusual approach.

Communication with Paul, the owner, was prompt and really helpful and the directions and instructions clear. The listing is faultless, if anything underplaying how lovely the Tower is.

There is no wifi at the Tower but you can pick up the neighbouring hotel's from the kitchen (almost all restaurants in Trogir have their own free wifi anyway...). The Tower, by its very nature, has steep stairs over 5 floors so probably wouldn't suit anyone with limited mobility.

Trogir itself is a gorgeous town, loads of restaurants and bars, easy access to local beaches via the cheap and regular water taxis and well served by public transport to other destinations. The ferry to Split takes an hour and is dirt cheap. Split itself is an unmissably beautiful city as well. It's also easy and cheap to hire a car via local company Lunar which is perhaps the best way to access places like Krka waterfalls and other sights (Krka is an hour or so away by car).

Can't fault this beautiful accommodation in a beautiful town.

Owner's Response: Thank you for a lovely review. I am glad you made the comment about hiring a car. It is also possible to just go on an organized trip with someone like Portro and make it even more hassle free. Do come again.

Fantastic medieval tower in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay in this amazing property which oozes history & is smack bang in the middle of the medieval city of Trogir. We were just 2 adults. Be aware there are lots of stairs, it is a tower after all. The house-book dates back to 2007 & is entirely made of positive comments both of the property & the area. The owners have added so many helpful little details. Croatia - what a beautiful place & there is just so so much to see & do, try to do as much as you can via the water because that is where this area really shines. All the local food outlets were great value & with equally decent food. Didn't do any self-catering so we tried many of them without any failures but if want to cook for yourselves then everything you need is on hand. I would recommend both the Tower & the area. I would return.

Historic Tower in Atmospheric Trogir

  • 5 of 5

Trogir was a very vibrant place to stay and suited all of our children aged 17, 14 and 11.

The Tower is spotlessly clean and it was a real treat to stay in such an old building. It almost felt like being on a film set within a maze of beautiful streets. There are so many good restaurants ( Konoba Toma being our favourite) to choose from and I really miss the little ice cream shops.

Having Paul sort out our tranfers and emailing us to check everything was ok was a definite bonus.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Terrific Trogir Tower

  • 5 of 5

Our second stay at this fantastic tower in the centre of beautiful Trogir. Such a glamorous location but with very affordable restaurants and bars. Wonderful to look out across Trogir from the top of the tower and watch the swallows. And so easy to access brilliant beaches, such as Medena, via the water taxis on the Riva or take a speed boat trip out to the islands. And a visit to Split via the ferry is also a delight. Brilliant holiday all round.

In Trogir there is a colourful daily market and a Sunday fish market and beautiful architecture spanning nearly three thousand years. Several local beaches are a few minutes walk or ferry ride away. Visit the fascinating Roman city of Split where you will find the Emperor Diocletian's Palace. Make a day of it and enjoy the bustling capital of Dalmatia, taking in the famous Riva, good shopping and the atmosphere of this most unusual city.

The lakes and waterfalls of Krka National Park make a really pleasant, relaxing and cool experience. Make your own way there by bus or consider an organized trip which includes a visit to Sibenik. Any visit includes a boat trip to the collections of falls. The small islands of Drvenik Mali (small) or Veliki (big) is a great day out with it's lovely typical Mediterranean country walks and beautiful bays and beaches. There is a ferry that runs from Trogir several times a day. Other day trips include the Islands of Bol, Hvar, Brac and the city of Dubrovnik.

Plitvice Lakes National Park is a must. Within the boundaries of this heavily forested national park, 16 crystalline lakes tumble into each other via a series of waterfalls and cascades. The mineral-rich waters carve through the rock, depositing tufa in continually changing formations. Clouds of butterflies drift above the 18km of wooden footbridges and pathways which snake around the edges and under and across the rumbling water.
