About the property

Old world charm on eight acres of wooded grounds right on the lake

Please note: Before confirming your reservation, the receipt of a copy of the primary reservation holder's valid Driver's License is required.

Step into a timeless place where the magnificent natural surroundings are beautifully matched and enhanced by this stately, elegant and very comfortable and luxurious lakefront mansion of the old-world style. Featuring 3 bedrooms, each with a private bath, each wing of the mansion features breathtaking views of beautiful Horseshoe Lake, a large, recreational lake just 30 miles from Memphis, Tennessee. The home sits on several acres of luscious wooded grounds with stately Bald Cypress trees along the bank of the lake, giving the home its singular character. The Snowden House, built by one of the founding families of Memphis, is the oldest residence on Horseshoe Lake and features many architectural details including a grand marble-floored entrance with a sweeping staircase, a fan window highlighted the antique crystal chandelier, a Carrera marble fireplace and three-panel gilded mirror over the fireplace, all heirlooms from one of the original family homes in Memphis. All of the formal living areas are on the second floor in the style of antebellum Louisiana-style plantation homes along the Mississippi river. Three sets of French doors open out from the formal living room which features 12 + foot high ceilings and signature cove lighting from its beautifully molded soffets, onto the spectacular screened porch which affords a sweeping view of the lake through ivy-patterned wrought iron. There is a large, formal dining area, as well as a more casual breakfast and lunch porch completely surrounded by windows looking out over lake and woods – perfect for lounging away the afternoon, watching the birds and the sparkling waves of the lake. There is a live-in kitchen that is shared with the owner and is available for preparation of simple meals, as well as a charcoal grill for outdoor cooking. And the more casual downstairs area is great for relaxed family get togethers with easy access to the beautiful Horseshoe Lake, which, at one time, was an arm of the mighty Mississippi.

During the summer months a pontoon boat is available upon request for an additional charge, as the lake is ideal for family gatherings and enjoying a full range of water-related recreation. Wonderful picnics under the full canopy of the great oak trees on the bank are a big favorite throughout the summer, as the breeze off of the lake keeps the outdoors pleasant throughout the summer. During fall, winter and spring seasons, the home is a favorite for lovers of wildlife, fishing, bird watching, canoeing, or just building a nice fire and enjoying the tranquility of such an elegant yet comfortable setting.

The master bedroom on the second floor and facing the lake, features a state-of-the-art memory foam topped king bed, upholstered headboard, hardwood floors with comfortable wool area rug. The master bath is your own private marble-lined spa with a sumptuously deep marble-decked 6' long, deep bath with your own private view of the lake, while the marble lined shower sports 6 Kohler shower tiles plus a wonderful, Grohe overhead shower spout. Step out onto the heated travertine marble floor and seep yourself in the luxury of this lakeside master bath.

There are two more bedrooms on the second floor, each with their own private bath and views of the lake. The third floor is occupied by your hostess and is completely separate from the main parts of the house. On the ground floor, guests enjoy a more casual atmosphere where they enjoy a large screen TV, a library bar with a large table for games and other gatherings on rainy days, and men's and ladies' dressing rooms where guests may change into their bathing suits and have outside access to the lake.

On the west end of the property is a private pier with chaise lounge chairs and sun umbrella for sunbathing and enjoying the view, a perfect spot for a swim on a warm summer day!

PLEASE NOTE: the owner lives in her private quarters on the third floor of the home.

About Martha McKay

The Snowden House was built by my grandparents, Bob and Grace Snowden. In 2005, I bought the property from my family and spent several years restoring it to its present condition. While we were born at Horseshoe Lake, we grew up in San Francisco and traveled back to Horseshoe Lake every summer during our childhood, which instilled a deep and abiding love for the home and all of the happy memories there.

For my guests who come to stay at Snowden House, I am available to cater your meals for you if you wish. I love to cook, and can prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner as per your request. Also, please be aware that I live in my own private quarters on the third floor of the home and am available to help with any questions about the area, but also am able to give you full privacy, as per your wishes.

Peaceful, relaxing and a great place to hang out with dear friends

  • 5 of 5

We stayed with two other couples that we have been friends with for 28 years. This was the perfect meeting place for our reunion. Martha was a wonderful hostess meeting all our needs and making us feel this was our home for the weekend. The House was better than expected. Peaceful, beautiful and relaxing. Close enough to visit Graceland, Beale Street and downtown Memphis. Stick with the catfish at Kamp Komfort. And eat at St Francis in Hughes for country cooking. If you like to hang out on the lake rent the Pontoon boat. You won't be disappointed. Thanks Martha for sharing your peaceful plantation with us

Beautiful Home

  • 5 of 5

The Snowden House is a beautiful home with a breathtaking view of the river. We stayed Easter weekend and it was wonderful. Martha is a gracious host and goes out of her way to make sure you have everything you need. We were able to rent the pontoon boat and had so much fun. Definitely worth renting. The sunsets are amazing. Martha had outside games for the children to play and we had an Easter egg hunt. We look forward to another at the Snowden house.

A beautifully appointed historical property.

Our recent stay at Snowden was exactly as presented and more. Martha's love for her home is apparent in every detail and her hospitality beyond compare. We have stayed in homes all over the world. This was our favorite...hands down.

Owner's Response: Restoring the family home to its glory while carefully appointing modern amenities has been and continues to be a labor of love over these past several years and brings its own satisfaction in the results. But what makes the effort the most rewarding is having a family such as Kelly's stay here and appreciate it the way they did. They were a lovely, extended family of three generations, each enjoying the home and its bucolic setting. I welcome them back anytime!

Beautiful Breathtaking and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

The Snowden House is a wonderful place to relax and fall back in time. We loved our family vacation in the beautiful and roomy southern home. We enjoyed many family dinner prepared in the fabulous kitchen. Every morning, sitting out on the back porch overlooking the lake with a cup of coffee was divine. Sleeping arrangement for our large family was perfect. The bedrooms had their own bathrooms and had beds you never wanted to get out of. We were able to utilize the pontoon boat and enjoy the beautiful natural setting of Horseshoe Lake. Martha McKay is a gracious host. Listening to her family history and about the Snowden House enabled us to connect closely to our incredible surroundings. I hope to visit Martha and her lovely home again.

Owner's Response: Nothing gives me more joy and satisfaction than having Snowden House filled with families such as yours. I loved getting to know you all, and seeing you enjoy all the things that inspire me about this place. It made me happy to see your children playing on the lawn and watching the siblings delight in your oldest daughter's one-year-old son, who, after tutelage from each of your children, had mastered the stairs by the end of your visit!! And I loved hearing your stories about the discoveries you made on you cruises around the lake and the interest you had in our native fauna and wildlife. You are certainly welcome to come back anytime and I hope you do so soon!
