About Jean Buckley & John M. Thompson

We were lucky enough to work on the idyllic Island of Lana'i in the mid-90's and during that time, had the opportunity to purchase a new plantation home.  Our then 3 year old daughter named the house 'The Pink House' and it has been referred to by that name ever since.  Lanai is old Hawaii, with a slightly foreign feel. It is a place where you can still swim with spinner dolphins and green sea turtles while counting the whale breaches and not seeing another soul for miles on a sandy beach. We currently live in the mid-west and dream of the utopia of Lana'i and escape to paradise whenever we can.

Jean Buckley & John M. Thompson purchased this house in 1996

Why Jean Buckley & John M. Thompson chose Lanai City

The Pink House is set in a quiet neighborhood in Lana'i City, where you will feel you have stepped back in time, to old Hawaii. This is life in the slow lane. You can dine on the front porch and view the gardens, the forest, the sunset after using the new barbecue grill. Walk to the pool, the movie theatre, tennis courts, Golf Course or Dole Square, and return home to the comfort of the Pink House. Lana'i is home to the best climate in the world....without the crowds that normally accompany perfect weather. 76 degrees with light trades in town, with cool nights for great sleeping....and sweet dreams.

What makes this house unique

The Pink House is surrounded by gardens including palms, papaya, lime, tangerine, avocado, banana and coconut. There is lemongrass and kaffir lime growing steps away from the front door. Bird of Paradise, ginger and heliconia flowers surround the house. You can shower off the beach sand at the outdoor shower. Enjoy the art filled walls of the Pink house,

and relax on the soft leather sectional as you unwind at the end of another magical day on Lana'i. State TAT tax ID.

Loved our "unplugged" stay on Lanai!

  • 5 of 5

The Pink House is a great way to experience the local vibe of Lanai City. The home is a modernized plantation house located in a great location that is in easy walking distance to the market, local restaurants, shops, etc. Oh, and be sure to check out the movie theater (it's really nice). The daily afternoon breeze (nature's air conditioning) made it perfect for relaxing on the porch with a cool drink after a day's adventure around the island (Hulopo'e Beach is truly exceptional). The home is very clean and cozy and was perfect for our family of four. We've been to Maui, Kauai, Oahu, Hawaii, and now Lanai and they all offer a different experience. If you're looking for a very quiet escape from the crowds, traffic, and tourist atmosphere, then Lanai might be the ticket for you and staying at the Pink House is highly recommended. We look forward to returning!

Incredible stay in Lanai

  • 5 of 5

Wow...we so loved our stay at the Pink House. The house itself is absolutely beautiful throughout the inside and outside. Everything was just perfect for us. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful making for most excellent sleep at night. The air is much cooler than down by the shoreline, so open windows and ceiling fans are all that is needed.

From the house you can literally walk to anyplace in town or you can drive if it is raining. This is not a touristy place so do not look for any of that in this area. Saturdays they have a farmer's market in town...bring your appetite for some great foods. The local folks are very proud of their new theater so we took in a movie one evening...be sure to take something warm to wear as they keep the air conditioning super low.

This is the house to stay in for a visit to Lanai. There was literally nothing negative to report...a perfect stay for us.

Best Home in Town!

  • 5 of 5

Had the privilege of staying at the 'pink house' for 4 days and we really enjoyed our stay. Lanai is a quaint town with a lot of history and an old plantation feel. The 'pink house' has to be one of the nicest places in town. It is located on a corner lot just above the market and really close to everything that Lanai has to offer. Having stayed and seen several places, you'd be foolish not to book this home. The home boast beautiful views, modern appliances, beautifully landscaped surroundings and a feel of old Hawaii but with all the amenities your accustomed too. Being able to see the beautiful island during the day and coming home to a picture perfect sunset from the balcony while sipping a good glass of wine.... does it get any better than that? Take it from me, don't shop price! This place is worth every penny and we'll be back in a few months as Lanai and the pink home is truly something special.

Fantastic Stay in Lanai

  • 5 of 5

My family of four stayed two nights in the Pink House. We loved it and should have stayed longer. This was our first visit to Lanai and did not know what to expect. The town of Lanai City is quite small and much less touristy than places we have visited on other Hawaiian islands, but there is an excellent movie theater, community swimming pool, grocery store, and a handful of restaurants within walking distance of the house. The house itself was lovely and clean. We will stay here again on future visits to Lanai. The house manager, Gail, was kind and helpful. While on the island, we visited the Lanai Cat Sanctuary and the Garden of the Gods (would recommend both). We also had a snack and drinks at the Four Seasons Lanai Manele Bay, followed by a few hours at the beach below the resort. This beach was fantastic and a highlight of our trip.

Pretty in Pink

The Pink House

We just returned from a memorable week’s stay at the Pink House. We appreciated all the thought that went into making this a comfortable, cozy place to stay. The kitchen is well appointed with ice cream scoops, good knives, juicer, salad spinner and even a bread maker (with recipe). A grill is on the front porch, if that is your preference. There is an herb garden in the front yard for seasoning your home-prepared meals. We enjoyed eating at the bar, table and on the porch.

The furniture is beautiful and comfortable. There are blankets for snuggling in for the evening ---we did use them while watching a movie.

The beds were comfortable and sheets divine. It is so quiet at night!

The artwork is cheerful and works well in the home. There is a small library of books. We especially liked those on Hawaiian fish. It was helpful after our snorkeling adventures.

The guest book for the house has maps and menus for the local dining establishments. We tried the juice bar, Blue Ginger, The Lanai City Grill and Pele’s. We would recommend them all! We also enjoyed the art at the Mike Carroll Gallery.

The people of Lanai greeted us warmly and were very helpful. This is a community where you feel inherently safe wherever you may venture. We hiked much of the island and walked Lanai City every day.

This is a wonderful place to relax and feel at home.
