About Sondra Markwardt
We are long time Alaskans. Philip worked with the Forest Service for many years and later became a pastor. He is an avid hiker, a back-packing enthusiast, an experienced cross-country skier and loves white-water kayaking. Sondra’s family came to Alaska before it was a state of the U.S. She considers it a privilege to have grown up in the old, “real” Alaska in a small bush town on the Yukon River. She values the Alaskan native culture and feels that her growing up years, which included a family dog team, were very enriching. Both of us have traveled the world extensively and value other cultures. We love meeting new people, and welcome others to the peace of our home. Our golden retriever dog is part of the enthusiastic welcome you will receive here. We both love the untamed beauty of Alaska and the God who created it. Because of Philip’s experience in the grand Matanuska Valley area and beyond, he will be able to direct you to fabulous outdoor experiences and possibly join you as time allows.
Sondra Markwardt purchased this Studio in 2003
Why Sondra Markwardt chose Palmer
Sixteen years ago, when we were looking for a lot to build our house, we kept coming back to this one because of its peaceful setting and the mountain views in several directions. Because of its proximity to the mountains as well as to the stores in the valley and the closeness to an international airport, we feel it is an ideal location.
What makes this Studio unique
Our two and a half acre lot includes a 1/4 acre of lawn, a rock garden, and lots of flowers, surrounded by spruce and birch trees. We are close to lots of recreation including spectacular sightseeing, fishing, world-class hiking and back packing, glacier tours, Iditarod race center, and excellent Winter cross-county skiing.
100% refund if cancelled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Quiet & Tranquil
The studio apartment was truly an excellent base camp to explore this beautiful part of AK. Sondra had the kitchen stocked with breakfast items allowing us to fix a variety each day. We traveled daily following Sondra and Phil’s recommendations which where spot on. We stayed 8 nights and enjoyed throughly. Highlights included Phil taking us along on his hikes showing us beaver dams, ponds and other neat places. We saw 3 beavers working a new dam. We would gladly return if ever in the area again. You will leave refreshed and blessed staying here.
We would love to have you return here, Kara and Gordon! Glad you had a great time!

Relaxing and comfy
We a had a great stay. The bed was super comfy. It was very clean and cozy. It was a great location to visit our sun playing baseball for the Mat-Su Miners. Our hosts provided everything we needed and then some. We were close to many day trip activities. We would totally do it again. Thanks for a great stay.
Great place in Palmer.
Nice place and friendly owners. Clean.
Convenient to surrounding areas! We explored Hatcher Pass and Independence Mine and appreciated the good advice of our hosts about things to see and do.
I was so pleased with my stay at Birch Grove. It was clean, comfortable and so incredibly peaceful! Sondra and Phil are wonderful hosts and I loved being greeted by Woodruff when I pulled into the driveway. I would love to come back next time I find myself needing lodging in the Valley.
We were in the area for two nights before heading to a National Park. We wanted to hike in the Palmer area at Hatcher Pass and this was more convenient than staying in Anchorage. We had everything we needed at the studio. We very much enjoyed having the kitchen as it helped save on costs with food. There are grocery stores nearby in Palmer and Wasilla. The bathroom was nice with good water pressure and temperature. We did do a load of laundry which was not in the studio, but up a set of stairs. They do have an electronic keybox on the door; it was nice to be able to casually arrive and not be on a set schedule. In the future, we would stay here again without reservation. Clean, cute, and perfect for our needs. The owners were easy to contact, and there were absolutely no problems at all. Thank you for a great stay!
You are welcome here any time! There are a lot more hiking trails to explore!
