Private cottage with full kitchen, bath & loft sleeps 4. Beautiful prairie view
About Vicky Radel
We both grew up in the area and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1972. After high school we moved to the Minneapolis/St. Paul area where we lived for 30+ years and raised our family. Over the years we often spent time at Steve’s family farm. In the early 2000’s, with no one living there anymore, the farm site was becoming sadly dilapidated -- yet the land, trees and water continued to hold a great sense of peace and beauty. We decided to buy the farm site, not quite knowing what we would do with it but wanting to preserve and restore its beauty and share it with others. We cleaned up 100 years worth of metal and junk and planted 6 acres of wildflowers and grasses to add to the hundreds of trees that were already there. The process took several years. During that time we made weekend journeys to camp at the farm and do the work we could. We quickly found ourselves reluctant to leave at the end of the weekend. We decided to build a small home with plans to perhaps retire there. In 2007 we moved into our new home (although we are not retired) and have been here ever since. We are so grateful every day that we are able to live here, enjoying the quiet beauty of the prairie, its sunrises and sunsets, the star filled night skies, amazing birds and wildlife, and of course our pet chickens who entertain and feed us (eggs only!) We both have a keen interest in art. Steve graduated from University of Minnesota Morris with an art degree with a focus on sculpture and continues to explore his favorite medium. Vicky is pursuing her own interests in photography and encaustic painting (painting with pigmented wax). Our newest project on the farm is her new art studio. Vicky is also is an experienced practitioner of acupuncture and has a clinic in nearby Wheaton.

Why Vicky Radel chose Wheaton
Since our house is small, we realized we needed additional room for guests. We found an old granary a mile away and had it moved to our site. In the spirit of recycling, we transformed it into a beautiful guest cottage that we have decided to share with people looking for a peaceful retreat like ours. We love our decorating projects and have incorporated antiques and furniture from our parents and grandparents, barn doors from an uncle's abandoned farm 1 mile north of us and the horseshoe we found while digging the foundation. The original granary floor is refinished and a screen porch lends that relaxed country feel. The cottage is about 200 feet from the house, where sight lines and trees maintain a sense of privacy for both buildings.
What makes this Cottage unique
It is hard to find a truly quiet place in our busy world. A place where the city lights don't interfere with the view of the stars and a place you can find solitude if you wish. Long walks along the river (or on the river in winter) with the interplay of nature and wildlife are nourishing to the heart and soul. You can read or write a book while sitting on the porch or by the fireplace. You can watch the birds at the feeder or see water fowl at area refuges. Perhaps an eagle will fly over as you sit by the river or go out in the canoe. The deer walk through the property regularly. Whether it is a special event or a week long getaway the beauty of the prairie's big skies will greet you.

Quiet secluded cabin to get away
A nicely renovated cozy granary. It was very quiet. It sits on the owners property, perhaps 300 yards from their house. They have mowed paths that wind through the property as well as a little creek. I certainly had my share of fresh eggs!
I had a special situation where I needed Wifi, so it was unfortunate that the cabin itself wasn't equipped with it. This was stated in the check-in instructions, but I didn't notice it until I arrived. Vicky did, however offer to let me use their 3 season porch where it was available. I would just recommend that the internet be removed from the property
We had a really nice stay at Redpath Retreat. Lots of conveniences and thoughtful touches -- we took advantage of the lovely screen porch, cooked and grilled our own meals and caught some beautiful sunsets just west of the property. It was really wonderful to be able to bring our dog, too. Feeling refreshed! Thanks for a great long weekend!
Relaxing getaway in a well designed, well stocked cottage
This cottage is amazing. It is roomy, yet small with every foot of space well used. It is also beautifully decorated with original artwork and photographs. Since Steve grew up here when it was a farm, plat maps, newspaper articles and artifacts are throughout the cottage. Walking the mowed paths through the property and watching the changing clouds was very relaxing. Chickens and bird watching as a plus.
Beautiful, peaceful, no traffic noise, wonderful hosts
This was my first stay here, but not my last! Steve and Vicky are wonderful hosts, they thought of everything. Fresh eggs from their chickens in the refrigerator, a robe and slippers waiting in the bathroom, clean, cozy, beautifully decorated cabin, 40 acres of land to stroll and enjoy, nothing but the sound of birds, chickens, and the wind. I just left, and I can't wait to go back!
Amazing, just what I was looking for.
Everything was perfect and well thought out in this place. Just cozy and had everything I needed. Thank you!!!
Perfect, Once Again
We stayed here this time last year too, welcoming in the new year with reading and cooking and taking walks. We love it here so much. It is cozy and feels so secluded, even though the owners live on the same property. We appreciate the coziness of the cabin, the fresh eggs and occasional rooster crow, and the perfect quiet. We plan to come back again in Jan 2020 if not sooner!
Enjoy the peace, quiet and beauty of all of natures seasons in our lovely private cottage. Our farm sits on a creek surrounded by 40 acres of wildflowers and prairie grasses. It is located on the west central Minnesota prairie and is home to abundant wildlife. Watch the sun rise and set and enjoy campfires under star filled night skies. A great place to get away from the everyday hustle and bustle of our lives and back into the nourishing embrace of nature. Enjoy our meditation garden, walk the trails, watch our entertaining chickens and gather their eggs for breakfast. You can canoe on the creek that flows through our property or skate or cross country ski on it in the winter. The area is on a migratory route host to many birds and waterfowl. Especially alluring is the peace and quiet of this country respite.
