About this property

Nature Lover's Paradise - 2 BR/1.5 Bath, Pool & Gardens on the Beach

On three acres of jungle and gardens, with 50 meters of beachfront, this open-air home, accompanying gardens, and a small pool, is perfect a couple or a family.
We are set up for 4 guests, in two double beds, in the two bedrooms. Beyond that, it is an additional $20 per day to bring in more beds and bedding. We can accommodate up to eight in the main house.
Finca Sombrero y Camisas offers an alternative to a full-service lodge.
Plus, good wifi if you need it.
Comfortable, yet simple, this beautiful beachfront home is off the beaten trail.
Wake up to howler monkeys and enjoy sunrise across the Golfo Dulce from the pristine beachfront, as you sip your morning coffee. Scarlet macaws fly overhead in pairs. Toucans swoop through the yard. As many as four types of monkeys have seen spotted on the property in one day. Spider and squirrel monkeys fly overhead from tree to tree, and howlers and white face monkeys pass through here as well. And if you are lucky, you will spot the occasional sloth.
There is something here for everyone: waterfall hikes and repelling, tree canopy tours, horseback riding, bird watching, yoga classes and surf lessons from locals. It's private and peaceful, yet walking distance to a handful of Mato Palo surf breaks.
Great for families and guests of all ages.
Curl up in a hammock, or hang at the pool, and enjoy nature all around you. And if you don't feel like cooking, there is a great restaurant within walking distance.

This is truly a jungle experience, in an open-air home, complete with insects, bats cruising through around sunset, howler monkeys at the break of dawn and birds signing, hummingbirds buzzing the flower arrangements, and animals that will come into the kitchen at night if you leave food out.

Due to the open-air nature of our home, no loud parties are allowed.

It's not for everyone, but most are thrilled to be immersed in the rawness of nature, yet in the comfort of your home. It truly is a once-in -a-lifetime experience for most of our guests. And for those world travelers, they attest that they've never been at a place with so much biodiversity, yet right on the beach.

This open-air home and accompanying gardens and pool, is set up for 4 guests, in two double beds with a mosquito net.
Additional $20 per night per person for up to eight total in the main house.

PLUS: Check out our new rental on the property that sleeps four: La Joya, right on the beach with a view of the waves and Golfo Dulce / Pacific Ocean. Great for a smaller group, or add to the amount of people in the main house to accommodate a large group.

Wonderful Jungle Property
We had a great stay in this beautiful property. As described, it is like a tree-house in the jungle--the walls are open, we had hummingbirds darting in and out. I thought the heat and noise of the jungle might be too much, but actually was very lulling, and felt great to go to sleep and wake up with the sun and the sounds of all the birds, monkeys, insects and more. The kitchen is very well-equipped. We arranged for a local cook to prepare meals several evenings with food we purchased at the grocery store in town, and she did a great job. The showers are outdoors, which again is great as long as you are comfortable being one with nature. The caretaker who lives on-site did a great job of helping us with any questions and arranging tours at our request. We enjoyed surf lessons, kayaking in the mangroves, horseback riding on a deserted beach, and an amazing day seeing so many animals at Corcovado National Park. We also just enjoyed swimming at the beautiful beach right on the property, and cooling off at the pool. The wifi worked great, which made my teenager happy, but even better was family time enjoying the gentle surf, amazing stars, and unbelievable wildlife.

An experience...
This is an experience that you likely haven't had before...You are in an open-air home with only curtains between you and nature. Lots of room, one inside toilet upstairs. You'll share the house with crabs, lizards, spiders, and more. You'll hear howler monkeys and macaws at 5 AM and the cicadas at night, but surprisingly, not as loud as we expected. If you are there for a thunderstorm, it is amazing with the rain pounding down around you, while you stay nice and dry inside. Unfortunately, we didn't see anything other than hummingbirds, a coati, and lizards at the house. When we walked up the dirt road, we were able to see howler monkeys and white-faced monkeys, but we had hoped they would be on site. We did follow the sounds of a group of macaws while on site to an almond tree where they were feasting. The pool is refreshing as it was hot - 93 most days. The beach is rocky and not for sunbathing or easy to get down to. Surfing a 20 minute walk down the road at the official beach looked great - really long runs, but still rocky, so not a typical beach. Oscar was amazing. Arranged a night hike for us and we saw spider monkeys, tarantulas, cockroaches, snakes, frogs, scorpions, and more. Martina's, the restaurant, is good. You won't want to leave once you are at the house. It takes 30 minutes to get from town down a VERY rocky and bumpy road. With a large 4-wheel drive, we blew out a tire and saw others experience the same fate. Thanks, Oscar and John for everything!

Jungle living
Deep in the heart of the Gulfo Dulce in the sweet little village of Matapalo. This place is glamping at it's finest, with an awesome camp kitchen and a pool. We saw macaws and spider monkeys EVERY DAY! Even a spider monkey with her baby coming to eat from the trees right next to the house. We also saw agouti, anteater, armadillo, hummingbirds, and many beautiful small birds drinking nectar from the gardens. There's an awesome expat bar and restaurant in very close walking distance, Martina's that serves food and drinks, and the beach Pan Dulce is a short walk or drive with awesome resorts nearby where you can go for food or drinks. Oscar, the caretaker who lives onsite, hooked us up with a last minute trip into Corcovado. Oscar is incredibly caring and we felt so safe and cared for! The teens had a bit of a challenge dealing with the heat and lack of privacy, but they pulled through and had a life changing experience on the Osa Penninsula! Thank you so much for the experience! Highly recommended.

Great Jungle Experience
We enjoyed our stay at this jungle property. The house was well-equipped and clean. You are definitely in the jungle and wildlife viewing was great. Walking on the beach with macaws soaring and monkeys in the trees was definitely a one of a kind experience.

I have been traveling in Latin America since my teens, starting in Baja California, all the way to the tip of South America. Found this special place in the early 90's, and made it my 2nd home.

Why they chose this property

Surf brought me here. But when I bought it I had already spent some time, and gotten to know the area. The wildlife, the beach, the community of Ticos and international community, and the step out of time, all are part of why I am here. And did i mention the
MONKEYS?

What makes this property unique

We are on the beach, and in the jungle. Caretaker and his family are also a BIG plus- convenient access to town and amenities, without renting a car or driving. As well as transportation, we offer a guide, cook, coordination of tours, and other services to make your vacation the best!

DRIVING DIRECTIONS:
We are near the tip of the Osa Peninsula, 10+ miles south of Puerto Jimenez, on Hiway 245, a gravel road.
Puerto Jimenez is a 45 minute plane flight from San Jose, on either Nature Air or SANSA.
Taxis can take you from town to our property, or you can drive, with a rental car.
We are closed during the heavy rainy season, October.
When you cross a new bridge, about 10 miles south of town, you will see Ojo del Mar Lodge on the left, and we are the next driveway, with our sign at the entrance- Finca Sombrero y Camisas. Across the road is Escuela Carbonera. If you get to Buena Esperanza Bar you have gone a little too far.
We can also arrange to pick you up in town, and take you shopping before coming out to the property.

PLUS:
Check out our new rental on the property: La Joya, on the beach, with a view of the waves and Golfo Dulce / Pacific Ocean.
Great for a smaller group, or add to the amount of people in the main house to accommodate a large group.
