Stylish 3-bedroom, 1.5 baths, porch + deck duplex by the park, near the beach

This is our 2nd year offering BOTH mirror image sides of our vacation rental duplex, 303 and 305 Strawberry Street. We purchased the duplex fall 2014 and completed renovations on this side in the spring 2015. The atmosphere is coastal woods (restful bald cypress tress line the driveway) with contemporary-style kitchen and baths (plus the original claw foot soaking tub that was just refreshed).

Our property is conveniently located at the crossroads of Cape Charles - an easy walk to "downtown", the beach, and across the street from Central Park. The duplex has a covered porch to enjoy your coffee in the morning overlooking the park (east) and a back deck with table/chairs, umbrella and new gas grill (west), overlooking the fenced-in back yard with outdoor shower. Final touches have just been completed on this style-conscious, comfortable, and cozy coastal weekly rental (right side of duplex; both sides available for summer rental). Please take a look at the photos to see the front and back outside, and each room.

Cape Charles is embraced by water on three sides: commercial town harbor and yacht center (south), public beach (west), and marina (north). It's a wonderful setting if you love the water! Park Place is 3 blocks from the beach (Bay Ave.) and 2 blocks from the shops on main street (Mason Ave.). We are a mile from Bay Creek's two signature golf courses by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, with top ratings by Golf Digest. The area promotes eco-tourism opportunities, including kayaking (even kayak/wine-tasting trips to a local winery), fishing off the town pier, hiking, and birding. You can rent jet skis at the harbor, bicycles, and golf carts. The town often has festivals, planned recreational activities for children and adults, and sometimes shows, movies, or live bands in the Park. The Eastern Shore Birding and Wildlife Festival in early October - fall weather is great here! A walking Christmas Progressive Dinner tour has been held the Friday after Thanksgiving for close to 20 years. Year-round, Cape Charles has live theater performed by Arts Enter and others at the Palace Theater, art galleries, a Brown Dog ice cream shop, ladies upscale consignment, and beautiful spa to name a few of the attractions in town! We have good eateries and, if you like nostalgia, be sure to stop by the lunch counter at Rayfield's pharmacy at the corner of Mason Ave. and Fig. Street. Cape Charles Medical Center is located on Mason Ave. too. Be sure to park your car by BACKING IN on the new angled parking on Mason Ave. FYI, tickets are being issued (and the speed limit in town is 25 mph).

For those who like buying local, seasonal, organically-grown vegetables and fruit can be purchased at Pickett's Harbor Farms south of town.

This 1925 duplex has beautiful soft light from tall windows and a great dining room to gather. Couples, small groups of friends, and families who want to slow down, go to the beach and the park, and relax in this walk-able small town should feel right at home. The kitchen is well and newly equipped, with upscale dishes and serving pieces if you like to entertain, two coffee makers (one is a French press), electric and stovetop teapots, stainless appliances, and an electric griddle for the times when a big breakfast and pancakes for all is just the right thing (even though you might not make all that food at home)!

Free WiFi internet is provided and a new 40" flat screen TV, blue-ray player and surround sound are in the living room.

Park Place is is adjacent to the park and playground (see photo), and the kitchen has a high chair, or youth chair if the tray is removed, plus children's dishes are provided.

Bedrooms: 1 with a king size bed, 1 with a double bed and 1 with 2 twin-size beds. The living room sofa is a double futon bed for extra sleeping space. Linens are new!

Some beach items are provided to lighten the load of your travel here (8 beach towels, 6 beach chairs, 1 boogey board, beach umbrella, beach cart, plus 2 fishing poles and crab nets courtesy of a recent guest).

There is a stacking washer-dryer in the kitchen, plus a few DVDs, games, and books in the dining room bookshelf, along with a few toys/puzzles and potty for young children. Bring your DVDs, CDs, and digital music (iPods, etc.) to enjoy on the TV and surround sound system. For dogs approved in advance, a dog bed and bowls are provided too (a $50 pet cleaning fee will be charged). There is an outdoor shower and small, fenced-in back yard.

We chose to move to Cape Charles from the hustle of northern Virginia in 1997, and raised our son here. Cape Charles offers a very nice quality of life, it's like going back in time 40 or 50 years, and has a great mix of people from all over.

Why Bill Walker chose Cape Charles

Cape Charles is a lovely town right on the Chesapeake Bay, and just short 45 min. drive from Norfolk International airport, and you don't have to worry about leaving extra time for traffic to make your flight! Park Place is a super location - away from the busy (during the summer) Bay Avenue by the beach, and "downtown" on Mason Ave. - but only an easy walk of 3 blocks from each. Being across the street from the beautiful Central Park - it's great for walking the path any time of day, with a playground for children. When there are concerts and festivals in town, they are often in the park.

What makes this house unique

We updated this property so it would be pleasant for our own family members. It is more than "just a rental" in terms of pleasant surroundings, pretty things, some modern style, and convenience. It's a place we might like to rent ourselves, or have our son live in.

There is a great spa (Breezes) on our Strawberry street and the Impact Fitness Gym on Peach Street allows walk-ins for daily fee to use all facilities - free weights, weight machines, spin, and wonderful classes (Total body workouts, Pilates, ab/butt, and thighs - a variety weekly). Great instructor/owner (Jill)! And you can rent golf carts, jet skis, kayaks in town!

Porch Town

Very nice dog friendly home in the heart of Cape Charles. You can walk down the friendly neighborhood streets and meet neighbors sitting on their front porch or stroll to the beach, stores and restaurants. This was our first visit and we loved the charm of this town. The house was very comfortable, nicely decorated with a front and back porch to enjoy the outside. Highly recommend.

A Cozy House in a Cozy Town

Stayed at Park Place 2 in early September. There were five of us (three adults and two small children), and the house accommodated us well. As noted, the house itself is cozy and quaint but spacious enough that we never felt cramped. The owners were easy to work with, and they made the entire rental process a breeze. The location of the house was outstanding -- adjacent to the city central park, within easy walking distance of the beach (which we visited daily), and close enough to downtown Cape Charles to walk there too.

The town of Cape Charles itself was lovely -- many turn-of-the-century (20th) houses, a compact downtown area with several shops, etc., and a nice beach area. It all seemed quite family friendly. The downsides of Cape Charles (we found) were that (1) once you get past the beach and downtown shops, there wasn't a lot to do; and (2) nearly all the restaurants, though they clearly were not fast food restaurants, served fast food style quisine (mostly fried). Undoubtedly to some, this will not be an issue, but for an area that bills itself as a 'destination,' one would expect more variety.

Why only 4 stars for the house? Once again, it is mostly a matter of personal preference. While the house itself was great and well-equipped (especially when it comes to what one would need to go to and enjoy the beach), in a quiet part of town, and the owners more than accommodating, the living room furniture, while functional, was not as comfortable as it could have been. The bathrooms (one full bath and one half-bath) met our needs, but by the end of the week, each of us had grown weary of showering in the small clawfoot tub in the main bath.

All in all, this was a great place to stay for a quiet and peaceful vacation. I heartily recommend it.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We always strive for excellence and try to improve our offering whenever possible. We agree that the futon sofa (an attempt to accommodate a 7th sleeping guest in the living room) was uncomfortable and have replaced it with a more comfortable traditional sofa. The clawfoot tub is quaint and original but not to everyone’s taste. But everyone seems to enjoy the enclosed outdoor shower. We’re surprised you found mostly fast food styled fried food at our restaurants. We dine out often, rarely eat fried food, and very rarely dine out of town. The tiny, “Hook U Up Gourmet” restaurant is our favorite for special occasions. We also love “The Coffee House”, “The Shanty”, “The Oyster Farm”, and “The Coach House” on the golf course, among the many local restaurants. Check with us for a recommendation next time. New shops and restaurants seem to be opening all the time.

Fantastic, especially for families with young kiddos

We had a fantastic stay at Park Place! We especially appreciated all the beach gear provided and made good use of it (beach wagon, umbrella, chairs, and toys). The house is so close to the park, and it's just a few blocks to the beach and a few blocks to the main st. with restaurants and shops. We loved being able to walk just about everywhere during our stay. We had a minor problem with the showerhead for the outdoor shower and Bill came over and repaired it right away. We hope to come back soon!

Amazing first trip to Cape Charles!

We are very happy with our decision to rent at 305 Strawberry Street. To be honest we were a little unsure renting a house that we had never been to before or even seen in person. We read the reviews and looked at the pictures which depicted a beautifully decorated well laid out home that had clearly been updated and maintained to our level of standard. In addition all of the reviews were extremely positive which really encouraged us to take a chance on this home. And boy are we thrilled that we did. The house is the perfect blend of new and improved with old home charm. It is very obvious that the owners take great pride in this home and really want to provide all the things that would make anyone feel comfortable during a vacation stay. From providing beach towels to games and puzzles to laundry and dishwashing detergent. No detail was left out. Our favorite added feature was the outdoor shower! It was just perfect after days at the beach for our kids and the adults too. We only used the indoor shower once all week. Another favorite feature was the front porch and the proximity to the park with the tranquil water fountain. Also convenient being only 3 blocks to the beach and 3 blocks to Mason Ave. We love how walkable Cape Charles is. Everyone that we spoke to was so friendly and engaging. One of our favorite encounters was meeting Foster, the mascot of the Brown Dog Ice Cream Shop on Mason Ave. If we were to make any recommendations we would suggest adding screens on both front and rear doors. We did experience a decent influx of flies coming in from both doors when opened. Perhaps screens would help alleviate the flies from entering the house. In addition the screens would allow fresh air to blow in thorough the house giving the AC a break on those breezier days. We look forward to our vacation already planned in 2018! Thank you! Lovely, convienient and just the right fit

We loved our stay on Strawberry Street. This quaint duplex features everything needed for an idea beach getaway. From the shore decor to the outdoor shower, everything is just beachy here. Our dog loved the back yard and we loved tooling around town in a golf cart. Cape Charles is definitely for us. Thanks to the owners for a great property. We will be back, maybe soon.

This is a perfect rental for a beach week for a couple, a few friends, or family with young children. The park is across the street (great for running and walking). The Cape Charles beach has a lot of sand for children to play and, because it fronts the Chesapeake Bay, seldom any breaking waves. Walk to the beach and the main street for shopping, restaurants, bar, gourmet food shop, galleries, antique shop, and spa. No stop lights and little traffic - this is where you can slow down and relax, enjoy the family and/or friends, and have the simpler, slower placed life style of the 50s!
