Very Private 2.5 Ac Mountain Retreat: True 3 Bdr On Large, Rushing Trout Stream

The Experience: Moonshine Bend is the perfect retreat for plant enthusiasts, animal lovers, bird watchers, and anglers. Here, the wildlife is flourishing, the farmhouse is comfortable and the grounds provide a safe haven for you and nature, alike. Come stay at Moonshine Bend to enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience with mother nature.

What a way, to get away! This beautiful, secluded, and very well appointed country farmhouse feels like it’s miles from anywhere, when in reality… it’s 7 miles to the Blue Ridge Parkway, 15 minutes to Boone, 20 minutes to Blowing Rock and just a short drive to West Jefferson.

Surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, this charming farmhouse has over 1000 feet of a pristine, state stocked, trout stream, known as Elk Creek, running through the 2.5 acre property.

Endless opportunities await you on the farm. Casting your line for that trophy trout, splashing in the swimming holes, hiking, cycling, playing croquet or horse shoes, even catching fire flies at dusk on a summer’s eve.

When you’re ready to venture away from the farm, you’re at the foot of the High Country. To your left, Boone, Blowing Rock, & Banner Elk. To your right, the charming town of West Jefferson. Antiquing, Tweetsie Railroad, ski resorts, horseback riding, Grandfather Mountain, Linville Caverns, the original Mast General Store of Valle Crucis, a Tanger Outlet Mall and Moses Cone Estate are all within a short drive.

When all the activities have worn you out, there’s nothing better than rocking away the time on the porch’s rockers or perhaps a nap in the hammock by the creek would soothe your soul. This is truly a place to drop out of the hustle & bustle and tune in to nature. Where deep breaths of fresh mountain air clear your mind and relax your body. Come feel this relaxation for yourself!

The Home: Come home to the Farmhouse where you will enjoy three bedrooms (sleeps six), two and one-half baths all furnished with high quality linens.

Cook your favorite meals in the very well-equipped kitchen or outside on the grill.

Enjoy the many amenities such as two cast iron stoves, whole-house water filtration system, zoned air conditioning and heating, wireless internet, a DVD player, television, plenty family oriented DVDs and family games and puzzles.

Ample parking is provided with easy access. And safety is a priority with new smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors throughout the house.

Loved this place!

  • 5 of 5

This large beautiful property has so many amenities inside and out. Everything was very clean, beds were extremely comfortable, kitchen had everything we needed and more, nice new washer and dryer, great deck, amazing fire pit, and a beautiful creek. There are some strict rules, including no dogs or shoes allowed upstairs, washing and drying all towels before you leave and driving your trash to the dumpsters, Our cell phones didn't work and there's no cable (there was internet, but we were required to use it sparingly), but we didn't miss them at all since we got to spend so much quality friend and family time in the mountains. The worst part was having to leave this very comfortable and beautiful home! We hope to come back again!

Best vacation in 20 years!

  • 5 of 5

On June 15th we drove 6 hours from Charleston to escape the heat and mosquitoes. We arrived at Moonshine Bend and the "road stress" was instantly gone as soon as we saw Elk Creek. Our sons, 15,12 and 7 essentially turned into river otters for 3 straight days. We couldn't get them out of the creek. My wife enjoyed swinging in the hammock, reading and drinking wine. We went to the Watauga Farmer's Market and to Tweetsie Railroad which were both fun. The best part was not feeling like you had to go somewhere to have fun because the creek was the best part. We saw an otter chasing a rabbit across the creek ( I bet on the otter and lost), we saw a deer on the other side of the creek, more fireflies than you can count and the neighbors chickens came for a visit (the black rooster is cool but beware of the white rooster). I always say in these reviews that we will return but this is the first time that I have meant it. My 7 year old made me promise that we would come back so I can't disappoint the little dude. If anyone gives this place a bad review then they're not the kind of people you want in your life.

This place is a gem!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this beautiful "farm house" on the banks of Elk Creek! The property is pristine and the house is immaculate. My husband and 2 sisters and I rented this property for 4 days/3 nights and couldn't have been more pleased. We have rented other Home Away properties but this one is far superior to any of the others. I would highly recommend it; you won't be disappointed. The house is fully furnished with beautiful antiques and the beds are comfortable and the whole house is cozy. The kitchen has everything you need to cook a full meal, and more! Our only, and I mean only complaint, was the weather. It rained the entire 4 days and the creek was reaching the top of its banks when we left. It went from a gentle little creek to a rushing river. And of course we couldn't have an outdoor fire. Maybe next time. We didn't let the rain ruin our trip--we relaxed in the 2 front porch swings and watched the water rise and listened to the sounds of nature all around us, so peaceful and restful. We identified many migrating warbler species, and even caught a few trout in the creek between rain showers. We will rent this place again! Thank you to Renee and Drew for sharing their awesome house and creek with us!! We had the best time ever!!!

Owner's Response: We appreciate your review and if we could have controlled the weather, we would have dialed in a sunny 75 degrees for you. Rain or shine, as you experienced, Moonshine Bend is a pretty amazing place. We look forward to your next trip. Thanks for staying and taking the time to write a review!

Idyllic setting, peaceful, cozy and a great place for a family Christmas.

  • 4 of 5

The property is beautiful, and this is winter! The sound of the creek beckons you to come and stroll. It is somewhat remote, so the nightlife you seek must be stargazing and the rippling of the water. We found the property clean, well maintained and well stocked. It is not as large as some others, but suited our six family members very well. We were very comfortable. If we are able to return, we hope to do it in the summer in order to enjoy the creek more. We think it rates four and a half stars.

When you’re in the High Country, you just never know what’s around the corner. You could be feeding the bears in the morning, and be on a train heading for trouble in the afternoon. Families build memories and traditions that last a lifetime, all set against the backdrop of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.

Tweetsie Railroad: A Wild West family theme park featuring a three-mile, steam-powered train ride through the North Carolina mountains. Shopping, live entertainment, amusement rides and a petting zoo. Open on weekends in may (fri.-sun.). Open 7 days a week after Memorial Day weekend through mid-August. Mid-August through October, open weekends (fri.-sun.). Operating hours are 9am to 6pm. Ghost train Halloween Festival runs weekend evenings in October. Tom Dooley: A Wilkes County Legend: Presented by Wilkes Playmakers, Tom Dooley: a Wilkes County legend, is the dramatization of the well-known 1868 Wilkes County love triangle that resulted in the murder of Laura Foster and the subsequent hanging of Tom Dula (pronounced Dooley). Folklore and legend feel that he confessed to the murder to protect his true love, Anne Melton. Local musicians will sing and play acoustical instruments and Appalachian square dancing will be featured.

Horn In the West: This outdoor drama in Boone—which runs mid-June through mid-August tells the tale of Daniel Boone’s adventures in the High Country and the little known, pivotal role local pioneers played in winning the American Revolution at the Battle of Kings Mountain.

Dates: June 27 to August 16, nightly except Mondays

Times: 7:30pm preshow; 8:00pm main performance

Grandfather Mountain: The swinging bridge at Grandfather Mountain the High Country’s premier natural attraction entertains, informs—even inspires—young and old, families, and the serious outdoor adventurer.

Grandfather Mountain, the tallest mountain in the Blue Ridge and the world’s only privately owned international biosphere reserve, is non-profit preservation at its loftiest.

A spectacular drive takes visitors to the newly wheelchair-accessible mile-high swinging bridge, thousands of feet above the Carolina Piedmont. You’ll marvel at 360-degree views of mountain ridge after mountain ridge retreating to the distant horizon. Surveys show that the journey to the other side is always the highlight of a trip to Grandfather Mountain.

A world-class nature museum, interpretive programs, and environmental habitats for deer, bears, cougars, eagles and otters offer outdoor education and entertainment. Awesome trails lead to high adventure.

The Blue Ridge Parkway

Called “America’s Favorite Drive,” but the Blue Ridge Parkway is about so much more than driving. Enjoy hiking trails, biking, lakes, picnic areas, bouldering, rock climbing, and of course, some of the most beautiful views in the south.
