About this property

Lovely stone home with garden, in a castle near beach and 1 hour from Venice - 3

Casa La Vicinia is situated in one of the oldest private castles of northern Italy. The owners have lovingly restored three beautiful stone homes supplying them with all comforts.

It has its own private garden, closed with a fence in order to guarantee the privacy of the guests, who also have access to the gardens of the castle.

On the ground floor there is a dining/living area with a bed-sofa, armchair, several chairs, carpet, desk, small tables, cupboard, sat-tv, wooden table and chairs, drawer.
There is also a fully equipped kitchen.
From the dining/living area you have access on a lovely arched portico and on the garden for al fresco resting and eating. There are a wooden table and chairs, a round table with chairs, a BBQ and deckchairs.

On the first floor there are:
-a vast open space area with double bed and a
-a large double room.
Both open space area and double room have a cupboard, drawer, bedside tables, chairs, desk, mirror, carpet and each have their own bathroom with shower, sink, bidet and wc

All efforts have been made to offer a wonderful stay.

The castle complex is formed by the main building, surrounded by a series of beautiful stone buildings once used as guards’ houses, administrative and judicial centre, stables, artisan workshop, granaries, archives, rice mill and tower.

On one side the main building is connected by an arch to the church of St. Nikolaus, formerly castle’s chapel which was donated to the village (catholic masses on Sundays) and on the other side there is the ancient tower.

The setting is really beautiful and the whole is surrounded by lovely gardens, crossed by spring-water streams and rivers.

Strassoldo is a precious gem of a lovely and still unknown region which is not overrun by tourists. In fact, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, has many important historical sites, a lovely nature with many different wonderful landscapes ranging from high mountains, through rolling hills and green plains to rock or sand beaches.

The castle is situated in a very central position from where it is easy to reach all these attractions.
Only to mention a few, #Venice is reachable in 1 hour's drive, the ancient Roman colony of Aquileia (the second biggest colony of Rome) in 10 minutes, the golden beach of Grado in 20 minutes, the beautiful town of Udine in 30 minutes, the marvellous Adriatic Gulf with the town/port of Trieste in 38 minutes, Slovenia in 35 minutes and Austria in 60 minutes.

The guests can relax, make very nice walks in the Friulan countryside, go biking through cute little rural villages, go swimming in the nearby Adriatic Sea and make nice day excursions to many interesting regional sites and towns.

The region also offers the possibility to taste excellent Friulan wines and food.

Wonderful location and bui a quiet corner of Italy
The accommodation was well within our expectations. Spacious bedrooms, nicely furnished, maintained and well equipped. The bathrooms were clean and adequate. And the bonus of all bonuses was our hosts. We simply could not ask for more, both Lella and Midia bent over backwards to make our stay a pleasant and memorable one. We had several wet days and how nice it was to be given a freshly baked pie as compensation for the bad weather. On other days were were given freshly baked bread, wine and chocolates. Despite the weather we were able to see the surrounding areas and particularly liked Grado, Palmanova. We managed to visit Udine in the pouring rain and catch up with a mosiac master. We highly recommend this property and everything it has to offer.

Lovely, wonderful stay
We had an amazing time in Strassoldo. One of our favourite short term stays we have had. The unit was spotelessly clean, and had all the conveniences you could think of. The castle of Strassoldo is very interesting to wander around, and the town is centrally located for many daytrips. We loved it!

Traumhaft schöne Tage in Strassoldo

Lovely Village Stay
Castello Di Strassoldo is a lovely spot, not fancy but comfortable and well equipped, in a unique and special setting. The owner Gabriella and helper Nidia are wonderful and it is clear that you are staying somewhere with tremendous history and charm. The castle complex is fascinating and the morning and hourly bells from the small church remind you regularly that you are in a bit of a fantasy land! There is not much to the town other than a small grocery store, a pharmacy and a post office but that's really all you need! Except, of course, a truly wonderful bar called BarBagianni (you will understand the name when you get there!) that is run by a lovely group of women and seems to be the social center of the town. It is a vibrant place that made our stay perfect.

About the host

Hosted by Gabriella W. di Strassoldo

Host profile image
Gabriella Williams di Strassoldo is the current owner of the castle of Strassoldo di Sopra.
Her mother inherited her family's estate in awful conditions in the Sixties. The place belongs the counts of Strassoldo since it was built more than a thousand years ago. Like her mother, Lella felt obliged to look after the complex and helped her mother as much as possible since she was very Young, so the two of them alone dedicated their life to the maintenance and restoration of the castle.
The lack of money and aid forced them to face many difficulties, but year after year there were improvals and the complex has now acquired its ancient beauty.
The complex is formed by a central building and a series of houses once used for administrative and rural purposes, the whole is surrounded by centuries old gardens washed by spring water courses. Many parts of the complex were complete total ruins up to 20 years ago.
Gabriella grew up in Britain, Germany, Austria and Italy and speaks fluent English, French, German and Italian. She, therefore, brought her experience and different mentality to Friuli-Venezia Giulia, implementing many touristic activities that involved also other castles of the Region.
She organised many fund raising activities (exhibitions, visits, weddings, workshops, presentations, etc.) with the aim to carry out the heavy restoration works.
After renovating many parts of the main building of the castle and its garden, she brought back the Archives, which had been sold by her grandfather, in 2001, and immediately started restoring its ground floor and garden. In 2009 the the rice mill, which had partially collpased was also restored and turned into bed and breakfast, with four double rooms, which are open from mid April to mid November.
In 2012 the guards' houses and the Vicinia, which had collapsed, were restored and turned into holiday homes. There are now three lovely self catering and independent Holiday homes, each with its own garden.
