The old Upper Chetco School is now open as a rustic getaway for families, fishermen, hikers, bikers, swimmers and people who love the Chetco River! Short miles to Riverside Market going back to town or Loeb Park heading up river. As only locals know Brookings is home to the beautiful banana belt which comes with a marine layer frequent in the summer. Just above the fog line, enjoy a short trip to the ocean for the day and then retreat to sunshine and a swim in the river at Loeb Park or one of the many river bars on the Chetco.

The South Wing consists of two large "schoolrooms." One with a modest kitchen and open living room. The living room has two couches and a futon that can be used as a bed. The second houses the library books from the school along with 3 queen sized beds. The large bathroom has an overhead shower and roomy stall area.

The North wing is more cozy and not as bright. Has a cabin feel with the one "schoolroom" equipped with a king and a queen bed in the same large studio room as kitchen and living room area. The bathroom is the mirror of the South wing bathroom with overhead shower and floor drain. Two very small "office" rooms are off the hallway. One room has a single twin and the next has two twin bunk beds. These rooms lead into the laundry room for the entire rental.

Converted from school rooms, this rental is unique and unconventional. Some of the perks include a playground and gym at your doorstep, a game room with pool, ping pong and air hockey, a large stone fire pit, an outdoor basketball court, a library with hundreds of interesting reads, and spacious rooms. Surrounded by horse pastures we have a large parking area and are fully wheelchair accessible. Enjoy the Upper Chetco ideally located at the gateway to the Upper Chetco River and the Kalmiopis Wilderness area.

Great place for a big family!

  • 4 of 5

This place was really neat and perfect for our big family. Wish there was more than 1 bedroom per side and a dishwasher, but plenty of beds. Super close to great swimming, too. We had a great time!

Huge, fun place

  • 5 of 5

This is a very roomy place with tons to do. There is ping-pong, basketball, and more. This is a great place for a family reunion or a work retreat. The place is clean. I suppose the only slight annoyance is that there is only one shower in each of the two bathrooms, so they are often in use with a large group. I would definitely stay here again.

Reliving 5th grade

  • 5 of 5

It's been several months and I still can't get upper Chetco out of my mind. I literally have dreams about staying there all the time. But I've always loved the school since transferring from town the 4th quarter of the 4th grade...exploring it without limits was heaven.

My old classroom is now the game room. At the time, there was a pile of junk, including the wood stove from my grandfather's house. We had many ridge visitors including my dad and his friend, Nick. When Nick said he recognized the stove and my dad was like that was his dad's, I didn't believe him. Later his step mom, Mimi, stopped by and confirmed that the wood stove was indeed theirs.

We had so visitors who shared their memories of the school. I loved looking through the library books looking for familiar names. I played guess what book my brother checked out...and laughed every time I was right. (He loved cars). My book choices were obvious (babysitter's club...with twins!), and a butterfly book (I remember writing that report).

Pro tip: wear shoes. The real hardwood definitely took a toll on my feet. But shoes are overrated.

My dad, rebellion that he is, enjoyed parking in the school bus only zone. He's been around the ridge since he was 16 and had many memories of the school that pre dates having kids who went there.

There was a old year book we found, and my dad knew just about every kid in there. His brother was an 8th grader that year.

It was a really neat experience and surreal, because we were there the first week of school. I had forgotten how busy the north bank road is though.

One of the best parts was seeing a true sunset. Being away from town and heavily populated areas, your could see the sun still setting around 10pm.

I can't wait to go back. I really want to have a girls getaway there. And I see they've painted the game room. The neat thing about the unpainted room was seeing where bookshelves were. There were National Geographic's, which amused me because the shelf in the corner used to be filled with them.

I was disappointed that the marry go round and the teeter-totter were gone-I'm sure the school district took that down.

I could go on. I have always loved that school. One day I will be back and will explore much more. I really want to take my brother back.

Owner's Response: Jessica, Thanks for the review! It is always nice to hear that someone "loves" the school. And not for the couch we put in a nice kitchen set, but for the school itself. For us it has a personality and a heart. We love it too. We fuss and take care of it as if it were a beloved grandmother. We walk down memory lane every time we are there. The yearbook was my sisters. Yes, I remember the merry go round and a huge metal slide, as well as the old boat that used to be in the playground. How cool was that??! Yes, those things have gone but I do know who has the merry go round and am hoping to recapture and replace someday. The wood stove came from friends who lived on comstock, so yes, an old house on the lower ridge, not sure if it's the same one but quite possibly it is. We are planning on installing it in the living room where you stayed. The project of the school is ever so slow though so not sure when. The books are so much fun, just what the district left. I try and stay away as I have gotten lost in them many times and get distracted from my task. They are so cool! We want to organize them but haven't made it there yet. Again thank you and we hope you do return someday, the upper chetco will be waiting...
