Overview

About the property

3 Bedroom. 2 Bathroom. Sleeps 7. Historic 1918 cabin with a modern addition.

Belle's Cabin prime location right on Main Street in beautiful downtown Talkeetna coupled with the historic attraction makes Belle's a perfect place to stay. We are located within steps to ALL major attractions. No driving required, EVERYTHING is within walking distance. Surrounded by beautiful gardens and lush landscaping, your stay will be very private and quiet.

We feature luxury mattresses and premium bedding. Two nicely-appointed bedrooms offer Queen beds while the third bedroom has a Full/Twin bunkbed plus an additional Twin for a total of 7 guests. The larger spacious bathroom in the new addition has a full tub/shower and the other bathroom in the original cabin has been renovated to modern standards with a wide shower, toilet and vanity.

A full kitchen allows for meal preparations. The kitchen is part of the original 1918 Belle McDonald cabin but has all modern appliances, including oven, toaster oven, coffee maker, and a small (not full size) refrigerator. With all the delicious restaurants within walking distance you may not find yourself cooking much... also there is no TV at Belle's Cabin.

The gardens have been loved and cared for over the years and in summer bursts with gorgeous flowers of many varietals and a large assortment of peonies. Some of the peonies in the garden are the first ever recorded grown from seed at this high latitude.

Dating back to 1918, Belle's Cabin was originally owned by Belle McDonald, an indomitable, hardworking trading post operator who lived in Talkeetna for over 40 years. A large addition to the cabin was recently added and designed with modern standards which complement the original historic structure.

After Belle McDonald, Roberta Sheldon made this cabin her home. Roberta lived in Talkeetna 50 years, authored two local bestselling historic books, and was the wife of Don Sheldon, who was known as one of the world's foremost mountain-glacier pilots. Don's air rescues, pioneering flights, mercy missions, and everyday adventures are recounted in many books, on The Discovery Channel, and in numerous articles including National Geographic, LIFE Magazine, The New York Times, Reader's Digest and Sports Illustrated. Roberta and Don Sheldon owned & operated Talkeetna Air Service until 1975, when Don died of cancer. The local Sheldon Community Arts Hangar was the base of operations for Don; it housed his airplanes, mechanical and woodworking shops, stored an extensive collection of climbing gear he loaned, and hosted many of the early mountaineers who pioneered climbing routes on Mt. McKinley/Denali, and was known as the Sheldon Sheraton.

Although Belle's Cabin is located on Main Street it remains a quiet retreat due to the positioning of the house and the lush landscaping. It is truly a gem of a property that will add to the memories you make exploring Talkeetna and the grandeur of Alaska.

About Marne Sheldon

Belle's Cabin was the home of Talkeetna's first businesswoman, Belle Lee McDonald (who lived in Talkeetna 40 years) and later became the home of Roberta Sheldon. Roberta Sheldon lived in Talkeetna over 50 years and was instrumental in helping shape the charm of the town today. She also authored two local best-sellers: The Heritage of Talkeetna and The Mystery of the Cache Creek Murders.

Roberta and her husband Don Sheldon owned and operated Talkeetna Air Service, which Don founded in 1948. Don Sheldon was known as one of the world’s foremost mountain-glacier fliers. His air rescues, mercy missions, pioneering flights and everyday adventures are recounted in numerous articles including LIFE Magazine, The New York Times, and Reader’s Digest. An area on Denali is named The Don Sheldon Amphitheater; where the historic Sheldon Mountain House is located (built in 1966). The book Wager With The Wind was written about Don, and numerous stories about Sheldon are featured in many books about Alaska. In addition, Don flew 26 missions in World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and four other Air Medals. The Sheldon Community Arts Hangar here in Talkeetna was the base of operations for Don; it housed his airplanes, mechanical and woodworking shops, stored mountains of climbing gear he loaned, and hosted many of the early mountaineers who pioneered climbing routes on Mt. McKinley/Denali. Don Sheldon died of cancer at the age of 54. Roberta never remarried.

Belle’s Cabin (the original two-room cabin structure) dates back to 1918. In 2003 Roberta had Master Logger Arthur Mannix and his team add a large addition to the original cabin, and made it her home. Roberta dearly loved the community and people of Talkeetna.

Roberta’s children Kate Sheldon and Robert Sheldon and Robert's wife Marne welcome you to their historic Talkeetna gem.

Beyond Expectations

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we walked in the door we felt welcomed, from the fresh flowers to the hand written welcome. The location was everything we hoped for, walking distance to all the Talkeetna treasures. The gardens were magnificent, the peony roses took me back to my childhood. Nothing was left out!. Coffee, tea, easel with drawing supplies, someone thought of everything, down to the books on the shelves. I have stayed in many VRBO homes, but this one definitely surpassed all the rest.

I would definitely recommend Belle's Cabin and if the future holds another trip to Talkeetna, I would undoubtably stay again.

Thank you Sheldons!

"We would go back in a heartbeat"

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in Belle's cabin in June and loved every minute of our stay. We were 6 adults and a toddler and the home was perfect in every aspect. It is beautiful, historic and very comfortable. Though in the heart of downtown Talkeetna it is also very private. As described you can walk out the door and be able to walk to everything in town. We went river rafting ate at the roadhouse and visited many of the neat gift stores in town. You can easily walk to the rivers edge and see the beautiful mountains including Denali on a clear day. Our toddler loved running in the park and seeing the trains come through town. Our stay was perfect in every way and I would love to return someday. Thank you to the Sheldon family for all the special touches they add to their beautiful home and their hospitality. Joan Raymond and family Enfield Ct.

Lovely cabin with perfect location.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay over 4th of July weekend. It has to be the best location and cabin in town with so many great personal touches that make the stay ideal. We had three kids ages 10-14 and not a single complaint was heard about the fact that there was no TV....that says a lot about how great the cabin was!!!

Great location

  • 4 of 5

Great, historic cabin right in the center of town. We walked everywhere and only got in the car for our day trip to Denali. Much larger than we thought and very comfortable. Only complaint was the constant flow of tour buses bringing in people. Beautiful flower garden!
