About Carolyn Thompson
I moved to France to live permanently in 2016 with my husband Jerry and our Working Cocker Spaniel Inca. It's hard not to fall in love with this area. We had explored this region on holiday when our children were very young and again 20 years later when they were all grown up. Our attraction for the Perigord Noir had never diminished and so now we find ourselves living our own little dream and having a French adventure. Le Peyruzel is a special spot, it remains very unspoiled and operates as a working farming community, crops here are mainly Walnut groves, but also wheat, barley, hay, maize, and sunflowers too. Our properties sit nestled on the slopes and enjoy the most amazing views across the Ceou valley and beyond. The properties are about 200 years old and formed a cluster of ancient farm buildings, they have been lovingly restored from dereliction by the previous owners over a period of 20 years and have operated as gites for many years. A brand new pool built into the slope has been created by us this year and this has been a most welcome addition to the property and helps to ensure that our children come to visit us regularly!
Carolyn Thompson purchased this Cottage in 2016
Why Carolyn Thompson chose Daglan
The thing that sold this property to us was the character of the buildings themselves, the quality of their renovation and the views. When you drive in you just feel peaceful, relaxed and at home.... it’s as simple as that!
What makes this Cottage unique
Location, location, location….to be in such a perfect spot and yet so close to so many of the regions gems is what makes Le Peyruzel a special place.

Quiet, restful with grand view
Amazing little cottages tucked between several over laps of hills.....not far from most of the attractions in the Dordogne. Lovely sunsets and something to see from every window.
Cottage has everything one needs to set up housekeeping and if it is not there the owner will find it.....we had a very comfortable stay.
We liked having the owners on site as many places have property managers....owners make sure your needs are being met, answer questions and if you needed some help in an emergency would be there....makes an older traveller feel that bit more secure.
Lots to do in the area and if you want to have a day of rest a lovely well cared for pool. Although the cottages are side by side they are sound proof....with private outdoor eating spots and entrances to the pool....although it is fun to get to know your neighbour.
So much going on in the area.....boat and kayak tours, lots of Chateaus and beautiful gardens to visit.....Sarlat and Lascaux are not far away....
We never watched TV so no idea re how the reception was but wifi was fine.....great laundry room with lines to make use of the sunshine....my favorite drying tool.
Small towns in the area with great boulangeries and patisseries....and a very good grocery store.....and of course lots of markets everyday.
You could search a long time and not find a better place. My biggest problem was the hob...I just never learned the trick to keeping it on....
Very good location. Easy to get everywhere!
This is better located than it might seem. It is 20 minutes from the southern edge of Sarlat ( and the rental car place and train station). Maybe 10 minutes from Domme, which we loved!! And Cenac, which has a very good market AND grocerie. Great restaurant in Daglan, La Cantina. Very good. One can drive easily most everywhere from this cottage, and you can walk quite aways into the little burg of Peyruzal ( no shops there). Fabulous view of this from Walnut, both day and night.
Both Jerry and Carolyn are very personable.
We loved the cottage. One caution, however. It is on two levels, the bedroom(s) and bath on the second level. The steps are fairly narrow and steep to reach it. I had no real problems, at age 72, however I was also quite slow going up.
Quite enchanting countryside. We loved it.
Beautiful setting, lovely property, fantastic hosts
We stayed in both Walnut and Truffle over 2 weeks. Both properties well equipped and decent size pool. Comfortable beds. Beautiful setting very peaceful and great walks for the dog. Plenty to do but you do need a car. Carolyn and Jerry are lovely people very friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. We will definitely return.
Clean and well equipped cottage in beautiful surroundings, with easy travel to local attractions
Walnut cottage is set in quiet and scenic surroundings. The cottage has everything you need to make it feel home from home. Carolyn and Jerry make you feel at home immediately and offer suggestions of local attractions without being intrusive.
Even though we don't have a dog we loved seeing Inca who is such a gentle and loving natured dog.
My husband found it a great base to explore the area on his road bike with plenty of challenging routes to complete.
We visited Sarlat (early one morning before the crowds, as suggested by Carolyn), went canoeing (which is a great day out), visited the local bread maker Friday night (lovely bread, make sure you get there early before it sells out), Domme is lovely and the caves are worth a visit but go early, and finally the Castles are great to explore with Castelnaud a good visit taking no more than a few hours to do.
Would throughly recommend the cottage and the area as there is so much to explore, and would stay in the cottage again if we wanted to stay in the area again.
Thank you Jerry and Carolyn.
Gorgeous place, fabulous holiday!
We stayed in Walnut for 2 weeks with our little dog Ollie. The gite and the surrounding area are stunning, Carolyn, Jerry and Inca their dog were perfect hosts, giving us great advice and suggestions for places to visit, we were wowed with them all! We would highly recommend the gite(s) and the location itself is perfectly placed for exploring as everywhere is so close. Every time we visited a village / chatuea we said it was our favourite...until we visited the next one! Go, you cannot be disappointed!
Thank you x
Dear Rachel, David and Ollie,
Thank you for choosing to stay with us in Walnut. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed the area so much. It is a truely special place and so hard not to appear to be over selling it! Everywhere captures your imagination! Thank you for being such great guests, we loved meeting you both and Ollie is such a lovely little dog too, you need to get him a canoe now!

A beautiful retreat with fantastic views.
The cottage is in a lovely secluded location and has spectacular views over the valley below. It is charming inside and furnished in keeping with the age of the building. All mod cons are provided and the kitchen is well equipped. Our two boys loved the heated pool which was open till 10pm! Jerry and Carolyn were very warm and welcoming hosts with plenty of advice about where to go. We'll definitely go back!
We are in the heart of the Perigord Noir and really close to all the major attractions that this stunning area has to offer. Here are just a few of the places close by some just a few minutes from us
