Welcome to The Waterside Cottage,
Spacious, airy and relaxing 2 bedroom cottage on Harness Creek, just 5 minutes to the Naval Academy and 30 minutes to DC or Baltimore. The Waterside Cottage is ideally situated to unwind from urban stress, yet close enough to enjoy the great galleries, memorials and bountiful history in the region. Or, you could just lounge around reading books, playing board games and rejuvenate in the tranquility.
Relax on the patio in adirondack chairs, sipping your morning coffee or enjoying a sunset glass of wine, watching the great heron that lives here or the foxes across the creek that play at the waters edge.
This is a very quiet, rural neighborhood 3 miles and 5 minutes from historic Annapolis. There is even a vineyard around the corner. Harness Creek Rd was described by Washingtonian Magazine as one of Maryland's 'Streets of Gold'. We agree ... we live next door!
The Cottage has hardwood floors and is fully furnished in a
comfortable 'Cottage Living' style. Sleep in the luxurious comfort of high-thread count linens, down pillows and duvets. Bathe with handmade soaps by a local purveyor and soft organic towels. There are also beach towels for those dips in the creek. The kitchen is fully-stocked with all number of gadgets, perfect for your crab feast, that Chesapeake picnic or a romantic dinner.
Over the years, the Cottage has had a fair share of upgrades yet she still retains the elusive character of yesteryear. Come ... unwind ... melt into cozy, lazy days.
We have had a challenging season in 2015. What is not permitted is to have more than 4 people stay overnight or 6 people visit during the day. Parking is limited to two cars. If you have plans that exceed these limits please call me to discuss your specific circumstance prior to booking. The Cottage is not a party house. Please do not make a reservation and then ask for leniency.
Built in 1928, our little cottage is part of the very fabric of this neighborhood community. The property was once owned by the Sheckell’s (you may notice their entrance to the historic Lydia's Rest on the corner across the street) just after you pass Harness Creek Vineyards. The first change of hands was to Rufus, who built the Cottage. A few years later, Rufus sold to the Gable family who owned it for most of the 20th century. They sold to Mr Leonard in the late 1980s. We became part of this history in 2004.
John and Theresa Morrison purchased this cottage in 2004
Over the years, the Cottage has had its fair share of upgrades (including a recent do-over of the kitchen area and larger bedroom) yet she still retains the elusive character of yesteryear. Time does indeed seem to lull by in a lazy respite from urban fever. The cozy atmosphere beckons you to curl up with a good book - or to write one.
The Cottage is replete with reading material and board games. In the summer, you can enjoy swimming in Harness Creek, accessible either from the dock or a gentle slope from the yard. In the winter, a warm wrap, sitting on the adirondack chairs warming in the sun is bliss. For most of the year, kayaks, canoes and paddleboats are available for rent at Quiet Waters Park, which also has a wonderful walking trails through its forests.
As a self-catering home, the Cottage is complete with all the necessary kitchen accoutrements, bath towels, beach towels, etc.. There is a supply of pantry items such as tea, sugar, salt n pepper and spices. To enhance your stay at The Waterside Cottage, we provide environmentally sound soaps and lotions. The towels are soft organic cotton and the sheets are crisply ironed high thread count 100% cotton. Luxurious down pillows (and hypo-allergenic pillows) and duvets ensure a wonderful night’s sleep.
Our goal is to provide you a comfortable get-away ... a place that feels like your very own vacation home.
We had a lovely time here - thank you for all you did to make our stay comfortable. The wildlife was especially wonderful to watch and listen to. I loved the blue heron who seems to be your mascot. Be well, and we hope you enjoy what's left of the summer. Julia
Owners were super. Helpful and friendly, but never intrusive. Property was just as we hoped. Wish we could be there in warmer months. I am sure the setting would be even nicer in Spring Summer and Fall.
We had a great stay and the location was great. Easy access to historical downtown and good access to local area shops. Theresa brought over some breakfast on our first day , we came in very late. THANK YOU !
Cute cottage with beautiful views and a boat dock. Enjoyed spending time as a family and loved that we could bring the dogs, kayaks, and boat. Our sons quickly discovered paddle boating (rented just across the creek) and forgot about their kayaks during our hot July weekend stay. We spent most of our time on the water, despite those pesky jellyfish, and my husband and sons proudly caught our final dinner of steamed crabs, with the expert help if a very nice neighbor. Thanks to the host couple for a very nice extended weekend "home away" from home.
We enjoyed staying at the cottage. John and Theresa are lovely people who made our stay very comfortable. The cottage is situated right on the creek with great views - very serene. We look forward to coming back.
As others have said, the owners of the cottage are wonderfully friendly. They are quick to respond to questions and generous with what's provided at the cottage, but all without intruding on your stay. The cottage is old, but in a charming way, as it has been well cared for and updated throughout. We took advantage of the plentiful windows for most of our stay, only using the air conditioning when the temperature and humidity outside got to be too much for my husband. The yard and dock were both nice to have with kids, and we spent a lot of time outside playing, fishing, crabbing and watching the wildlife. There were a handful of pleasant surprises, like the cabinet with kids toys on the porch, crab trap for the dock, charcoal for the grill, condiments and spices in the kitchen, etc. It was a perfect fit for our family and we would absolutely consider going back!
The location and property were nice and we enjoyed being right next to the water. Unfortunately the weekend we visited was unseasonably cold and the cabin's heat wasn't working properly. We had a half-dozen space heaters scattered around the house yet could never get the temp above the low 60s. The owners were easy to get in touch with but, apart from advising us to turn up the space heaters and pointing us to extra blankets, weren't able to resolve things.
