About the property

Multi-level guest cottage on shorefront estate

Located on Frenchman's Bay in the scenic Schoodic Peninsula, a short drive to Bar Harbor, Tree Tops Cottage is the charming guest house of a beautiful coastal estate on five acres of woodland, gardens, and a peaceful, protected, and pristine shore front. High in the branches of old pines, the 3-level cottage has panoramic views from all three levels of the mountains of Acadia, small islands, seasonal cruise ships at anchor, lights of Bar Harbor at night, and the occasional lobster boat working from local fishing villages. Wander along garden paths to the water where you can launch your kayak on a quiet cove and paddle into Flanders Bay, by Seal Rocks, and pull up on a Sandy Beach for lunch and a swim. The protected cove is a perfect place to try kayaking in the finest paddling waters in the area, or striking out in an exploration of the many islands that make up the calm side of Frenchman's Bay. Take your camera as you look for nesting bald eagles, and walk along our shore to find sea heather in season. Find a hammock or chair by the water, watch the tide ebb and flow, or capture a spectacular sunset at the end of your day.In close proximity to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, you can explore miles of carriage roads for walking and biking, the park loop road by the ocean, and endless trails and paths for hiking and walking.

At the end of the day, return to the cottage and relax on the large deck or the screened porch, surrounded by trees and gardens. The first level master suite with two double French doors opens onto the deck where you can enjoy morning coffee along with the ever-present hummingbirds. The main level has a full bath, completely furnished kitchen and living area, with dining table, relaxing chairs, and a couch in a cozy nook for reading or napping. Walk from the living room into the elevated screened porch, a captivating environment for alfresco dining or relaxing on the chaise, taking in the beauty of the bay. A window wall in the open loft creates a tree top aerie with spectacular views, a television, and additional sleeping accommodations for two. Whether you are looking for a destination to relax in the Schoodic and Bar Harbor area, enjoy the gardens and explore Downeast Maine, or want an active vacation to hike, bike, or paddle, Tree Tops Cottage welcomes you. The semi-retired owners, normally in residence, can be an excellent resource for all activities in the area, especially biking, hiking, and paddling. The cottage provides a unique setting to experience the best that beautiful Downeast Maine has to offer. As the cottage is close to the water and has three levels with stairs, it is most suited for adults and children 12 and older. It is furnished and equipped to accommodate four.

Everything we could have wished for!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I did not realize that we were really looking for a Maine vacation on the quiet side of Bar Harbor (AKA Schoodic Peninsula) until we discovered the listing for Tree Tops Cottage. This is a beautiful, intimate, well-equipped, 3-floor guest cottage above the trees, overlooking a cove in Frenchman's Bay and beyond to Mt. Desert Island and Bar Harbor. Lively Bar Harbor and the hiking/biking/touring on Mt. Desert Island are an hour's drive away, or -- much better -- an excellent 45-minute scientific adventure on the Schoodic Ferry. Although we enjoyed our day’s exploration of Mt. Desert Island, we preferred the hiking, climbing the coastal rocks, and the arts/antiques/restaurant exploring in Schoodic during the rest of the week.

The cottage itself was so appealing that we were completely content to spend days there, whether on the lovely, flower-banked stone patio right outside our comfortable bedroom, or in the living room and loft with their cozy chairs and reading nooks, or, most of all, on the second-floor screened-in porch where we ate and enjoyed the antics of the resident hummingbird. The porch was also my husband’s and my sanctuary for meditation and a little writing. The opportunity to sit quietly overlooking trees and water was a great gift – I could actually feel my work-induced high blood pressure dropping.

John and Carolyn have included everything to make this cottage a true guesthouse, from wine, cheese, and crackers to celebrate our arrival, to fresh flowers on the table, to a beautifully-equipped kitchen and plush linens.

The cottage itself is wrapped around in lovely forest. Carolyn’s gardens are the glorious result of passion and hard work, and the magnificent home they are completing on the property is indeed a labor of love. A path down the hill through the woods leads to a secluded clearing right on the water, complete with chairs and kayaks.

John and Carolyn themselves were warmly welcoming, anticipating our needs and at the same time respectful of our privacy. Becoming acquainted with this lovely, fascinating couple was an additional gift.

We consider our time at Tree Tops Cottage a blessing. We would return in a heartbeat!

Fabulous Rental!

  • 5 of 5

We give Treetops Cottage our very highest recommendation. The cottage is attractive and comfortable--the owners have thoughtfully outfitted it with touches that make all the difference, from topnotch cookware to the comfortable bed and fresh flowers--and the location is breathtaking. The view from the second story screened-in porch as well as lower deck to Frenchman's Bay and Mt Desert Island is glorious and ever-changing. Closer to hand, the owner's extensive flower gardens and collection of worldwide evergreens--not to mention their exceptionally beautiful shingle style home--made us feel as if we were living in Maine's version of Paradise. The owners are a delightful couple who attend to every need (though they anticipate most beforehand!). And they kindly allow guests to use their kayaks, which we thoroughly enjoyed doing. We were also happy with the location of the cottage: conveniently near Route 1 yet burrowed far enough into the countryside so that you'd never know it was there. The proximity allowed us to head both north and south with ease, to go hiking in the Schoodic portion of Acadia National Park and visit the area's many superb galleries and artists' studios, antique shops and restaurants. This is a very special place and we're grateful we found it. Deep thanks to John and Carolyn!

Wonderful experience!

  • 5 of 5

We have rented through VRBO many times over the years, and Tree Top Cottage is one of the tops (bad pun intended!)!! The cottage is even nicer than the pictures, providing a comfortable, informal atmosphere that goes perfectly with the beautiful, natural environment that surround it! The screened in porch and large deck are great for just relaxing. The location is great for seeing and exploring all that the Schoodic peninsula has to offer. With a wonderful ferry ride, you can be in Bar Harbor. There is plenty to do, and there are many opportunities to truly "get away," "unplug" and be off line!! John and Caroline were terrific hosts, allowing all the privacy we wanted but available to answer questions. This was one of our best vacations!!

More than we expected

  • 5 of 5

I don't really know where to start. John and Carolyn are amazing hosts.

The tree house home is spectacular. Carolyn made it a home away from home. We arrived to flowers (sooo many flowers) wine and cheese. John waved to us from his boat, with a smile of his face. We traveled from Florida and I'm sure, looking a bit tired.

Everything you might need is there. From flashlights to maps to board games and many books.

I enjoyed the deck, reading. Quiet sounds of the trees with an occasional butterfly landing next to me on the flowers.

We took the sea kayaks out and went across the bay with wine and crackers. Tides are a bit tricky, but they will give you tide maps. Not a worry.

Kitchen had everything we needed. Went to Portland for a day trip and found a lobster boat just coming in. Bought 6 lobsters for $40! We feasted on them for

3 days back at the house.

Hubby saw a deer on the property to his delight but not to the delight of Carolyns flowers . ;)

Their love and pride in the property shows.

My goal (in FL heat?!) is to master up my gardening skills now that I have left the beautiful state and amazing home of John's and Carolyn's.

We came in as strangers and left as friends.

Dan and Barb Cook

(Thank you J and C!)

The view was spectacular! The cabin was charming, warm and cozy. Beyond our expectations!

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for an abundance of beauty, serenity, and nature surrounding a charming treetop cabin this is the place for you! Acadia National Park called to us daily for hiking, biking and mountain climbing. Bar harbor was a 50 minute drive. We shopped, dined and took a trolley tour. John and Carol thank you for your hospitality. We will be back!!! Marcie and Danny, Dunmore, Pa.

Oasis on the Bay

  • 5 of 5

All of the other reviews for the Tree Tops Cottage and for John and Carolyn quite correctly describe their superb experiences which reflect our feelings. We use VRBO on a regular basis and what makes Tree Tops so special is the effort that John and Carolyn make to sure that you have a great experience while you are their guests. We like being away from the crowds of Acadia Park on the Island and found that the Schoodic portion of the park and the villages on the Peninsula provided us the coastal Maine experience we were looking for. Tree Tops also is very well located for visits to Campobello, East Port and St. Andrews in New Brunswick. The Gardens that that John and Carolyn have created around the Cottage and their home are spectacular and make it easy to just kick back and enjoy.
