About the property

Welcome to Pot Pie House! Immerse yourself in Eastern Shore culture in this newly renovated historic cottage located in the quaint waterfront village of Wittman, just minutes from St. Michaels.

According to locals, this charming nineteenth century home was a transplant from Hooper’s Island in Dorchester County, Maryland. It did not come to be known as “Pot Pie House” until it was later relocated to Wittman. As the story goes, Pot Pie Road was named for the oyster pot pies that the local women would make for traveling pastors. The house soon became a landmark for passing wayfarers and weary travelers in need of direction or a home-cooked meal.

The home is situated in a small, secluded neighborhood off Harris Creek. Sip your morning coffee on the front porch and savor the slow-paced Eastern Shore way of life or take a stroll down to the water’s edge to enjoy the peace and serenity offered by the calm backwaters of the Bay. Don’t forget to grab your binoculars—eagles, heron, and several waterfowl species make their home in the area, too.

Newly renovated in 2015, Pot Pie House features 3 bedrooms and 1 ½ bathrooms making it an ideal choice for a large family or even for two families to share. Two bedrooms are furnished with queen beds, and the third with twin bunk beds. There is also a full-size sofa bed in the living room, which sleeps an additional two guests.

The kitchen is fully equipped (there is also a gas and charcoal grill outside) so you can cook at home. Or, if you prefer, you can sample one of the area’s many great restaurants specializing in everything from barbeque to pizza and, of course, locally sourced, fresh seafood.

If you have your own boat, bring it along! We have two boat slips available for your use (at a nominal additional charge) located at a small public pier within walking distance of the house. Don’t have a boat? Borrow one of our two kayaks to explore Harris Creek and some of the other surrounding waterways. The many quiet creeks that branch off the Chesapeake Bay are ideal for fishing, crabbing, bird watching, water skiing, and tubing. If you want to see more of the Chesapeake Bay, we can recommend several fishing charters or sightseeing tours.

The Eastern Shore terrain is flat and perfect for biking or walking. We’ve provided two bikes, but don’t hesitate to bring your own! Enjoy a leisurely bike ride down rural roads. St. Michaels is only 7 miles in one direction, and neighboring Tilghman Island is only 8 in the other. If you have kids, the Wittman Community Park includes a playground, basketball court and baseball diamond and is a short, 2-minute walk from the house.

Rain put a damper on your plans? Take a quick ride up the road to enjoy the many shops, restaurants, and bars St. Michaels has to offer or visit the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum to learn about Maryland’s oyster and crabbing industries. For the beer and wine connoisseurs, St. Michaels also boasts a brewery, a winery, and even a distillery.

If you are not from the area, you may also opt to take a day trip to Annapolis, Washington D.C., Baltimore, or one of the sandy beaches of Maryland or Delaware—all within 2-3 hours of Wittman.

We hope you choose Pot Pie House to enjoy your Eastern Shore vacation!

About Elaine Parsons

Wittman MD captured my heart when I first visited over two years ago. My life time search for small quiet quaint places with old homes and a history by the water was finally found. I grew up in Takoma Park MD which has all that Wittman has except for the water. My love of old homes and and close community started there. Now living in Westminster MD close to Gettysburg in an Old home with a Gentlewoman's farm in the backyard my life is complete.

Why Elaine Parsons chose Wittman

This area is an unknown are to the Eastern Shore. We stumbled upon it when a friend offered to sell us a house in this area. We fell in love with the area. We then found Pot Pie house and decided to renovate her for family and guest.

What makes this house unique

Pot Pie House is quaint to include an inviting porch to enjoy early morning coffee or an early evening wine. Enjoy bon fires - Pot Pie house has one in the back yard waiting for her guest.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Absolutely lovely stay! The home is spotless and cozy, set in a secluded neighborhood just a short drive away from St. Michaels, so we had our choice of easily getting into town for the shops, galleries, and restaurants or staying in and enjoying the peaceful natural locale around the house. The owners were very communicative, welcoming, and extremely helpful in offering tips for where to go and what to do in town. The kitchen was well-equipped for us to make meals there when we didn't feel like eating out, and the living room was very comfortable, stocked with DVDs and boardgames that we enjoyed immensely over the rainy weekend. The perfect spot for a reunion with old friends.

A lovely, comfortable home surrounded by natural beauty

  • 5 of 5

We shared Pot Pie House with our daughter, son-in-law and 8 month old granddaughter. There was plenty of room for all of us with a variety of spaces that lent themselves to group activities, as well as individual, such as naps or reading. the front porch is especially lovely, even in pouring rain. The kitchen was well supplied with everything we needed for home meal preparation. Groceries were readily available in St. Michael's. There was even baby equipment available, the kiddie pool being a greatly enjoyed spot for splashing! We never got a chance to use the bikes or kayaks available. Next year!!

Spending time in St. Michael's was lovely. Walking around town, especially on back and side streets was very pleasant. Many good restaurants to choose from, with delicious menu options even for such unfortunate souls like me with fish/shellfish allergies.

Driving out to Tilghman Island, or off to myriad points/landings with gorgeous views of the bay was especially delightful. So much greenery, fields of soy and corn, in addition to blue sky and sea! A balm to the eyes and souls of these hard-core city folks.

Many thanks to Elaine Parsons for making all this available. We hope to make this trip an annual trip. There's still much more to do and see.

Quiet and Charming

  • 5 of 5

Pot Pie house is the perfect spot for a quiet getaway. The beds were very comfy and the house was very quiet! The house is about 1/4 mi from a boat ramp that accommodates big boats and kayaks (the house has 2 for use). Wonderful backyard and a fire pit for extra fun. The house is about 10 minutes from St. Michaels and the same distance to Tilghman Island. Lovely front porch too! Elaine was very easy to work with and everything was as promised at the house. Clean and comfy!
