About this property

Actress Bette Davis' former mountain lodge... spacious, enchanting!

Enjoy cool summers, fall foliage, and winter sports in the White Mounatins of New Hampshire!

Butternut is fabulously located near a picture-perfect New England town amidst all the year-round pleasures that the White Mountains have to offer. But its irresistable magic is the character that perfectly reflects the famous woman who built it... beautiful, elegant, timeless.

Built by actress Bette Davis in 1940, Butternut retains the character of that grand era while accommodating family and friends in contemporary style. Peace and privacy prevail on the 22 acre property overlooking the White Mountains. It is located on a quiet birch-lined road three miles from the villages of Sugar Hill and Franconia, and five miles from Franconia Notch State Park, Echo and Profile Lakes, and Cannon Mountain ski area.

The house is comfortably furnished with country antiques, artworks, and charming accessories. It is fully equipped with kitchen accessories for the gourmet cook, satellite TV and electronics, high speed internet, washer/dryer, and all bed and bath linens. The attached garage with firewood accessible from inside is a delight in bad weather.
There is a standby generator to ensure that full house power is provided during local power outages.

The Sugar Hill / Franconia area is ideal for summer, fall, and winter vacations. Butternut is available throughout the year. Reserve your vacation today and enjoy life as an American icon once did!

New England Getaway
A unique home with lots of nooks and crannies to explore and gorgeous views from every window. In spite of the rain and cloudy weather, we enjoyed exploring the area and spending quiet time reading the memorabilia about Bette Davis. Our least favorite thing was the stuffed raccoon in the Silo!

An Antique Charmer in the Rural Mountains
This was a one of a kind stay. This rustic barn house stands as a testament to a bygone era. We love old houses and live in one ourselves so we felt right at home. If you love ultra minimal modern spaces then this would not be a right fit for you. We very much enjoyed all the rustic spaces and opening all the windows and taking in the breezes and beautiful natural scenery that surrounds the property. My husband and I took up permanent residence in the facing wing chairs next to the huge casement windows with our coffee in the morning and our New England IPA in the evening. We took a little ride to the Conway area and were so glad we booked Sugar Hill. Conway was so commercial and Sugar Hill is really quiet and relaxing with little country stores etc. Be sure to stop by Harman's Cheese (best Cheddar!) and try Polly's Pancakes for breakfast! Littleton is just 15 minutes away if you want a slice of a little city life while staying in the country. We loved sleeping with all the windows open and hearing nothing but the birds in the morning. It was truly a special experience that our family will remember fondly. My boys loved the silo observatory in the home. Bette Davis built a true shangri la in the White Mountains here and it was special to experience a little of what she loved.

Beautiful Home and Property
Our stay at Butternut was perfect. The home is even more beautiful than it is in the pictures. It is well stocked with anything you could ever need and provided a central location for many hiking trails. We hope to visit again someday!

Butternut was part of my childhood when my family stayed at a local inn whose owners had sold the property to Bette Davis in 1938 and later bought it back from her in 1958.

Why they chose this property

Butternut is fabulously located near a picture-perfect New England town amidst all the year-round pleasures that the White Mountains have to offer. But its irresistable magic is the character that perfectly reflects the famous woman who built beautiful, elegant, timeless.

What makes this property unique

You will find Butternut far more that a plain house; it has a warm ambience that will make you feel right at home from the moment you walk through the door. The open plan of the first floor is wonderful for sharing time with family and friends, while the private rooms, nooks and crannies provide perfect opportunities for personal time. The lovely grounds of lawns, gardens, meadow, and woodlands offer diverse landscapes to enjoy and a spectacular mountain view as a backdrop.
