If you're planning a vacation to East Hawaii, I'd like to welcome you to stay at the Koholā Hale "Whale House". This renovated, two bedroom, two full bath vacation home offers a South East Asian decor with furnishings sure to please.

Located on a street that fronts the ocean, this property features a large lanai with excellent ocean views. Listen to the waves break on the shoreline and watch green sea turtles playing in the surf. During the winter months, October thru March, it's an excellent location to whale watch! With your morning cup of Kona coffee, enjoy a beautiful sunrise on the front lanai. A private lanai off the master bedroom looks over a beautifully landscaped tropical garden that's home to a variety orchids, palms and plumeria trees. The space includes a large cabana. Great for relaxing with family and friends!

Offering internet access and satellite TV, you'll feel right at home. The kitchen is fully equipped for all your culinary and entertaining needs. A large granite counter provides extra space for entertaining and seating. A beautiful mango wood dining room table seats eight. French doors open onto the large, ocean facing lanai.

The master bedroom includes a king size bed, large closet, and nicely appointed private bath and vanity. The second bedroom hosts a queen size bed and closet. Located in the semi-private den is a full size futon and built-in desk. This den can be used as a third bedroom. With a second full size futon in the living room, this house can sleep up to eight comfortably!

With a short drive to the quaint old village of Pahoa, you'll find a local supermarket, gas stations, bookstore, cafe, drugstores, gift shops, surf shop, Post Office and a handful of excellent restaurants; Mexican, Thai, Italian and local fare.

Conveniently located, many sights can be found within a hour's drive. At Volcano National Park you'll be able to see the volcano put on a show for you. At Kaimu Beach, sink your feet into one of Hawaii's newest black sand beaches. Explore Kapoho Fish Ponds where you can snorkel with tropical fish. Be adventurous at Alahanui Park and take a dip in the calm, healing waters of a natural geothermal pond or visit one of our many botanical gardens in this area. See why this island is nicknamed the "Orchid Island"!

Come stay at the "Koholā Hale"!

About Richard Marston

I was born and raised in California and moved here 25 years ago. My wife's family is from this area so naturally, we would come here to vacation with our own family. When it came time to retire, we built this house and moved to the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii. We've been on vacation ever since!

Richard Marston purchased this house in 1989

Why Richard Marston chose Pahoa

This house is located directly across the street from the ocean which protects it from some of the strong waves and spray that frequent the area. On days that have tropical showers, we have a covered lanai and cabana with BBQ, perfect to enjoy the outdoors in comfort.

What makes this house unique

You can sit on the front lanai with your cup of Kona coffee and watch the sunrise. On our nice pleasant Hawaiian nights you can sit and watch the silvery Moon come up over the ocean and if you're lucky, you'll be here during whale season, when you can hear the humpback whales bellow and play right in front of your very own home away from home!

Home away from home, we will be back!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 7 nights here and loved every night. The home is very comfortable...decorated tastefully, not 'cute'.. we knew we were in Hawaii.. on vacation. The large deck looks out into the ocean. A small, public park is a short walk ... where you can sit on the lava rocks and watch the large waves come in. The small town of Pahoa is a 10 minute drive, where you can buy groceries and gas. This home is very close to all of the sites we wanted to see.. the volcano, the black sand beaches.. the scenic 'Red Road' as well as the McKenzie Park, the Lava Tree park... and a short drive to Hilo, with it's museum's and past Hilo to the Waipio Valley look out, and scenic jungle road. After a busy day of site seeing we could come 'home' and make a great dinner to eat on the large deck, enjoying the tropical trees and ocean view. Richard, the owner is friendly, helpful, and lives in a little town just a short distance away, so he can be there within 1/2 hour if you need anything. This was a perfect vacation. We have already told our daughter & her little family about this treasure. They are planning their trip now... and we surely will be back. Thank you Richard! Sincerely, Jeff & Colleen Case. Whidbey Island, Washington state.

We loved our stay!

  • 5 of 5

The property was lovely, the house was very comfortable, and especially important is that the beds were comfy! Our stay felt serene. And the east side of the island is really beautiful and laid-back.

A beautiful place. Has everything that you may need. Nice ocean view.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay. It's a bit off the beaten path, but that is what adds to its charm. Richard is very nice, he spent about an hour with us. We would stay there again if we ever get to Hilo. Has the wonderful tree frogs that chirp most of the night.

near the ocean

  • 5 of 5

Kohola Hale was a very nicely done home in Pahoa. The grounds and interior are nicely kept. We found everything we needed in the kitchen. The bedrooms were nice sized and beds comfortable. There are extras like water shoes, chairs, snorkeling gear, and beach mats that helped make our stay nice. I loved my early morning walks down the street to nice ocean walks and sea cliffs. The neighborhood is very quiet, like a hidden gem. The location of house is close enough to Hilo and Volcanoes National park for day trips. We hiked five miles in and five miles out to see Lava flow. What an experience! We met the owner and chatted with him- he made us feel very welcome. Thanks for the short but charming stay at the home.

Enjoyed Meeting Richard!

  • 4 of 5

This home is located on the ocean at the bottom of Hawaiian Beaches Subdivision. We felt very safe and saw neighbors walking daily. We stayed two weeks and Richard stopped by after we arrived to make sure everything was okay. He was not intrusive but very informative of things to do in the area and even cut a orchid for us to bring home on the day we left. An email was waiting when we arrived back in Tennessee advising our security deposit would be refunded within 2 weeks - we've rented from VRBO many times and never had this quick of a response. Although we didn't cook the kitchen has everything you need to make dinners. We particularly enjoyed the font lanai - even saw two whales on our first full day there - having two bathrooms, and the washer and dryer. Thanks for everything Richard!
