Overview

About the property

Modern, immaculate and comfortable cabin surrounded by nature at it's finest

Tobacco Ridge Farm consists of 64 magnificent acres that you will have all to yourself to explore. The original tobacco barn has been fully renovated into a warm and cozy cabin that is clean, comfortable, modern inside and will easily sleep 5 - 6 people. The cabin has hard wood floors, knotty pine interior walls and the trim and stairs are made of reclaimed oak barn wood from a nearby farm. The custom handcrafted kitchen has a solid red oak countertop and cabinets also created from reclaimed barn wood. The kitchen has a farm house sink, refrigerator, microwave, stove, coffee maker, breakfast table with chairs and everything else that will make your stay comfortable. Downstairs is a private bedroom with 1 queen size bed and a dresser. Upstairs is a large "L" shaped loft with 3 twin beds and 1 full size bed. The bathroom is spacious with large step-in shower, blow dryer, cubbies for storage and a washer and dryer. The cabin offers Direct TV, a central a/c and heating system along with an instant hot water heater so you will never run out of hot water during your shower. Step outside onto the 16x20 deck over looking the fire pit and views of the farm. Outside are tables, chairs and a propane BBQ grill. Sit on the deck and listen to the wild turkey calling and the bluebirds singing while enjoying your morning coffee. There are 64 acres to explore which includes a creek, 3 small waterfalls, fields and woods. Walk quietly and you will see whitetail deer, wild turkey and numerous other wildlife. The farm land lays in several levels; top where the cabin and stock barn are located, middle field with long range views of the Daniel Boone National Forest and the bottom known as the holler where the creek and waterfalls flow. The farm has great views of the surrounding hills and is very quiet and peaceful. A nice fire pit is near the cabin with plenty of firewood that we supply along with three log benches for sitting. Campfires at night are awesome while roasting marsh mellows, making smores and sipping your favorite beverage. Take a picnic basket with you as you walk down to the creek (Clifty creek) and relax in the tranquil setting. There are many arrowheads lying around near the creek so look carefully and you may find some. There are two log benches down on the creek bank so you can sit and enjoy the surroundings. Next to the creek there is a place to set up a tent if you want to sleep under the stars while listening to the water roll across the rocks. The farm is only 1 hour south of Lexington where you can find the Bluegrass Airport, fine dining, shopping and world famous equestrian parks. Lake Cumberland is nearby where you can fish, swim, rent a boat or jet ski at Lee's Ford Marina. Cumberland falls, Daniel Boone National Forest and the Big South Fork National Forest are a short drive. North on Hwy 461 is Kentucky's country music hall of fame in Renfro Valley where you can see a show or walk through the quaint shops. There are restaurants, an old one room school house, water wheel and original old Kentucky log cabins that you can browse through. Two local wineries are just down the road where you can sample and purchase homemade wines. Cedar Creek lake and Laurel River lake are both a short drive where you can find awesome fishing and great views. Mammoth Cave National Park is under a two hour drive to the west on highway 80 for a fun day excursion. Somerset has many restaurants, an old fashion outdoor drive-in movie theater and many shops to visit. Somerset also has a really cool water park for the kids and a few private pay to fish stocked ponds if you want to wet a line. About a 10 minute drive from the farm in the nearby community of Staab Kentucky off highway 80 east is the worlds smallest creek known as "Short Creek" which you can find on the web. There you can swim, fish or explore the cave where the creek disappears back under ground, or you can skip all of it and just hang around the farm and get relaxed. The farm and cabin are truly a piece of old Kentucky history. It is peaceful, quiet and beautiful yet not to far from town and the lake. All we ask is that you please take care of our place like you would your own and keep it nice and clean. It has taken since 2009 to get the barn remodeled and comfortable and we are always improving. We hope you choose to stay at our wonderful farm, we enjoy sharing our little piece of Kentucky history with others. Please call me direct if you have any questions or suggestions. Kind regards, John and Caroline 772-216-3718

About John Barca

John and I like a nice, simple, yet clean and comfortable place to stay when we get away from our daily routine of work and raising kids. The property in Kentucky is just that. John, who has always wanted to be a farmer, had been in search of a special place for several years. He fell in love with Kentucky because of its rolling hills, green pastures, water supply, ability to fish and hunt and to get back to nature. The farm was originally owned by relatives of the current neighbors. Tobacco was primarily grown on the farm but during World War 2 the farm was used to grow hemp. The hemp was used for ropes and clothes for the soldiers and military to help with the war effort. Later years different breeds of cattle were grazed and the hemp fields were turned to hay. Currently the hay on the farm is cut, baled and used by our neighbors for their cattle which are nearby. With the lack of cattle grazing on the farm has allowed the woods and non-hay area to grow. By having more woods and cover has increased the number of deer, turkey, rabbits and other wildlife allowing them to flourish. The now cabin is the actual tobacco barn used for decades to hang and dry the tobacco after harvesting. The cabin, stock barn and chicken coop were built with lumber cut from the farm itself. We love our little cabin and farm and we are sure you will too.

Why John Barca chose Lake Cumberland

How many people get to sleep in an 80 year old tobacco barn and have 64 acres to run on, truly a piece of old Kentucky history. The farm is centrally located to numerous attractions which makes for an affordable vacation. It is peaceful, quiet and beautiful yet not to far from town and the lake.

A hidden little gem for a family get together or couple's get away.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I selected this listing as a close last minute escape. The idea of 60 plus acres of secluded farmland and a converted tobacco barn just 5 hours from home piqued our interest. And we could not have been happier with our decision.

John, the owner, could not have more congenital or accommodating. He made himself available to assist with any needs or concerns. Just a nice guy to do business with.

The description of the property is spot on and the photos of the cabin not do it true justice. The cabin is extremely clean, updated and very well maintained. The modern rustic décor even appealed to my wife. Everything you need is on hand. Basically, just bring food and clothes. Even a set of walkie-talkies is there to maintain communication while roaming about the farm.

Frankly, I do not think you can find too many rental listings that truly offer the bang for the buck as this one. You can barely stay in a chain hotel or motel for the same money. We would definitely return and highly recommend this little gem.

perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

What a perfect getaway spot, smack dab in one of the prettiest areas Kentucky has to offer. Rolling hills, pastures, green tobacco fields as far as the eye can see... these are just some of the sights that greeted us on the winding country road that took us to this unique renovated barn house. The rental is rustic and cozy and remarkably well-stocked with cooking gear, paper products, fluffy towels, even some toiletries - we had everything we could possibly need and then some. There's a nice big deck and a fire pit surrounded by wood benches, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed using. Walk on down the gravel drive, and you're greeted with a view like something out of a postcard - a huge green meadow on a steep hill, leading down to a rolling creek. You really feel like you're away from everything, but it's also close to stores and restaurants in Somerset. And there's a fantastic roadside produce stand about 2 miles down the road from the rental - you haven't lived until you've had a farm fresh summer tomato from there! The owners of the rental are super nice and accommodating, a real pleasure to deal with. If you're looking for a beautiful getaway spot in the heart of Kentucky, do yourself a favor and check this place out!

Beautiful cabin on beautiful property

  • 4 of 5

First impression when we arrived was it was a beautiful cabin in a beautiful, quiet surrounding. The barn/cabin was very well built and pretty. It was smaller then I pictured in my head (we had 6 people and 4 small dogs) but it would be great for a couple or family of 4. The bathroom connected to a bedroom that did not have a door, which was a definite downside since we were using that room. The big bed in the downstairs bedroom and the big bed upstairs was very comfy, but the little beds were not so much. The air worked well, but we wished the windows had curtains because a lot of sin and heat came through the windows. We enjoyed the outdoor fire pit, but really wished there was an overhang or at least unbrella on the back porch. This place had a beautiful porch but unfortunately we couldnt spend much time there because of the extreme heat and sun, there was absolutely no shade on the porch.

Overall this place was pretty nice. There were ups and downs of the location. The up side was it was secluded next to beautiful farms and a beautiful scenery, the downside it was super far away from anything we wanted to do. Just to go hiking somewhere seem to take at least an hour and the closest store is about a half an hour.

Awesome vacation at an awesome farm

  • 5 of 5

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Barca,

I want to take just a few minutes to tell you how much my wife and I enjoyed staying at your farm in Somerset, KY. It was special for us as we have just moved to Kentucky, completed the moving process, and are now ready to explore Kentucky’s beautiful landscape. First I want to say how much we enjoyed the 64 acres of land - forest, open fields, stream, etc. It was a stage for us to walk, take pictures, read, and just sit on the benches next to the stream and marvel at the works of our Creator. In the evening we would sit on the deck, listen to the sounds of nature, and enjoy an intimate conversation. It is so nice to talk to one’s spouse in the privacy and beauty of your farm. Of course I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about grilling a steak on your gas grill. Delicious! Finally, the cabin itself was beautifully appointed with a few stuffed animals on the walls(fish, deer, wild boar), vaulted ceiling, hardwood flooring and the knotty pine interior. Everything we needed to cook our meals was provided for in your up-to-date kitchen. The mattress in the master bedroom(1st floor) was very comfortable. The shower had a wonderful spray to wake up to in the mornings. What more can I say? Tobacco Ridge Farm hit our “restart buttons” and now we are refreshed and living the retired lifestyle of true Kentuckians. Thanks you John and Caroline from the new Kentuckians

Hidden treasure

  • 5 of 5

I can not say enough on how lucky we were to stay in Kentucky. Esp on this hidden treasure. It was truly paradise. It was perfect the moment we book with John. He was easy and very pleasant to work with. He made our stay his highest priority. When we arrived it was nice and quiet but not to far any from everything that you could ever want to do. Cumberland and Cumberland Lake are a must see. The pictures do not really show how beautiful the place really is. The beds and rooms were just the right size esp with teenagers. The farm was well supplied the items you will need to make yourself right at home.

Such fun!

  • 5 of 5

This was such a lovely place to stay with our two boys. They loved the loft to sleep in and the creek within walking distance. We caught some tiny fish and enjoyed navigating the mossy bank and slate creek bottom in our wellies. The owners were very communicative and kind. An idyllic retreat!
