Photos and Description of this Kyle holiday cottage

5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, stunning views, surrounded by mountains, loch nearby.

Situated at the head of the awesome Glenshiel in the shadow of the five sisters of Kintail, Woodlands is a spacious and extremely comfortable, self-catering, large, holiday cottage. With 21 Munros in its vicinity (the Five Sisters and Saddle being accessed direct from the house!), it is perfect for hillwalkers and ramblers. It is also ideal for families with children. With pool and basketball on offer plus many board games, children love the house and what it has to offer (happy, occupied children = happy parents!). Of course, many adults enjoy these pastimes too. For those wishing to tour by car or by motorbike it is extremely well-located for touring most of the Highlands and Islands. Finally, Woodlands' atmosphere, size and layout is great for large get-togethers.

Woodlands is a fantastic base for climbers, walkers and tourers. Apart from the multitude of Munros in Glenshiel itself, many other mountain ranges are reachable from Woodlands - the Cuillen hills, Knoydart, Glenelg, Torridon, the Ben Nevis range and Glen Affric. In addition, Glencoe is less than two hours away. For those who prefer to not go to such heights, there are countless mid and low level walks. Ramble through forests and isolated glens, wander alongside tumbling burns and cascading waterfalls, stroll along the banks of tranquil mountain lochs, or explore the miles of coastline the North West is famous for - all virtually on the doorstep!

Woodlands is also extremely well-placed for touring the Highlands and Islands. Enjoy the peace and tranquility of Applecross (made famous by Monte Hall's documentary series) accessed via the highest road in Scotland or take a cruise along Loch Ness and visit Urquhart Castle.

Closer to home there is the dramatic Eilean Donan Castle, the glorious Glenelg peninsular, the delightful Plockton or you may fancy going over the sea to Skye. Take a seal trip, sail in a glass-bottomed boat, go boating, pony trekking, mackarel fishing or just relax in the house and enjoy the views.

As mentioned before, children love Woodlands. Apart from pool, table football, basketball and many board games, there is half an acre for them to run around in plus woodland to explore behind the house (please note that small children will need supervising as one third of the garden is steep and a small spring flows down the hillside). When they are finally tired at the end of a hard day's playing, there is a TV, Video and DVD player. Lastly, the 10-seater dining table attracts adults like moths to a flame and the huge lounge is perfect for socialising. Families scattered to the four corners of the earth have reunited under Woodlands' welcoming roof.

*Fantastic accommodation, beautiful scenery. Excellent!

*Wonderful location. Another fantastic week at Woodlands. Relaxed in a brilliant house. Looking forward to next visit.

*Excellent week, great house, great location.

*I had the most wonderful time and I'm pretty sure that goes for everyone else too. Lovely cottage, gorgeous surroundings... I'll be back.

*Fabulous house - ideal for 2 families in gorgeous location.

*Thank you. Fantastic. We'll be back hopefully in summer to get some climbing done.

*Quite brilliant new year. The magnificence of the area can only be appreciated by those who have stood in it.

*Great place - love to come again.

*Great house, great weather, great walks, nearly bagged 3 Munros! A good selection of restaurants nearby. Trip to Applecross a bit hair-raising. Snow so deep on top of Sgurr an Airgid dog had to be put in rucksack for final ascent.

*A little piece of heaven in GODS country.

*Had a wonderful time in your lovely house. Enjoyed walking, spotting porpoise, birds and deer. Fabulous.

*Lovely place - bagged a few Munros.

*Not every day one hangs out washing or looks out of the window in such beautiful surroundings. A lovely stay.

*A perfect setting for a 50th birthday.

*Although it rained heavily for the first few days it certainly didn't dampen our time here. Scenery was awesome!!! House was large and comfy. Kitchen was a bit rustic by hey that's the way we like it, well equipped. Kids had a fantastic time and are already nagging us to bring them back. A big thank you.

About Miss Paula Reynolds

My partner and I fell in love with the Scottish Highlands 30 years ago. Rob is a keen hillwalker and I am a semi-professional artist and like a lot of artists before me, I am searching for the artists' holy grail - trying to capture the majesty and atmosphere of the Highlands. 13 years ago we decided to buy in Glenshiel as there is an abundance of Munros, coastline and wildlife in the area, and at the time we were going to move up there with our children. Things didn't work out as planned so we decided to rent it out as a holiday home and also use it for family holidays. Even all these years later, Glenshiel never ceases to thrill and there is always something new to discover.

Miss Paula Reynolds purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Miss Paula Reynolds chose Scottish Highlands & Islands

We were attracted to Woodlands because of its location. However, when we first viewed the property, we were bowled over by the size of the interior (it is very much a Tardis), the gorgeous views, and the wonderful, welcoming atmosphere of the place. Within minutes we had decided to buy, a decision we have never regretted.

What makes this cottage unique

The views from Woodlands are stunning, the mountains are on its doorstep and there is a huge amount to do in the area. The kitchen has proved a big hit with its long table and children seem to love the place. My own children (now grown up) say it's because it's so spacious and as the adults clustered around the kitchen table every evening, they had the freedom of the rest of the house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Just a very quick note to say a big thank you for an absolutely fantastic week we spent at "Woodlands" - we all had a wonderful time and our accommodation was absolutely perfect.

It was a very special time, not only because we had such amazing weather (blue skies and sunshine!), but a friend and myself also managed to compleat our last, 283rd Munro which we did together on the same day, during the week. After 21 years of trips up to Scotland from the South of England it was certainly something to celebrate - hence the big party of friends and family.

"Woodlands" certainly lives up to it's description on the website - it was very cosy, clean and exceptionally well appointed.

I have sadly to inform you that unfortunately one of our party thinks they may have lost the spare key, somewhere along the track to the Attadale Estate bothy. If this is the case, I fear that the unmarked key is lost for ever. I am very sorry - if you are able to get a replacement key cut I will certainly pay for it. Do let me know.

Anyway, I hope the house was left to your satisfaction - I will certainly recommend "Woodlands" as THE place to stay in the Shiel Bridge area.

Many thanks once again,

Large cottage for groups doing hill walking

  • 5 of 5

Just had a good week hill walking in this cottage with a group of friends. The accommodation is good, the large lounge and kitchen were great and toilets/bathroom to bedroom ratio good - 2 bedrooms en-suite and 2 further bathrooms. Nice welcome pack on arrival was appreciated as later group were bringing tea/coffee! Good location for lots of hill walking. Kitchen is well equipped and lots of large pans. We ate out twice at Jac-o-bite restaurant. Was better (more choice) on the Thurs than the Tue, but good anyway, reasonably priced.

A great place for a holiday in the W.Highlands

  • 5 of 5

Excellent property for our group of 9 walking friends. Plenty of comfortable space for sleeping, cooking and eating and socialising as well as getting away from each other when necessary! Woodlands is well equipped with everything you need, really. Info from, and communication with, the owner was friendly and helpful, queries answered and deposits returned promptly,

Terrific location with fantastic walks and hikes from the door and within short drives. Clearly lots of potential for driving further afield, too if we'd only had more time! Buses stop a few yards from the property, seemed popular and would certainly offer lots of possibilities even without a car.

Apart from the wonderful mountains (which we knew were there!) probably the most delightful discovery was the lovely area around Glenelg, quiet gentle walking, river swimming, the Sandaig islands and the perfect tranquility of the Sound from the garden of the Glenelg Inn.

All highly recommended!

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. One of Woodlands' best features is it's location for both local hillwalking and rambling and drives out to many different parts of the north west highlands. You certainly made the most of this with your many excursions. I'm so pleased you had such a good time. I hope to hear from you again in the future. Best Wishes, Paula

Wonderful time in a beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

We've been coming here for almost a decade now, as it's simply perfect for our needs. Ideally located for walks (you're right next to the Five Sisters obviously, but we made it all the way to the Quiriang this year!, but also day trips to Skype, Eilean Donan Castle, Loch Ness, etc. Anyone coming up on the bus gets dropped off thirty seconds from the cottage, but despite being right next to the road it's really quiet and peaceful. The kitchen has everything you need, and it's even better with the new cooker. Thanks again!

Excellently Positioned House to Explore Skye

  • 4 of 5

My family, including visitors from Australia spent the week exploring Skye and the West coast of Scotland from this well positioned and amply sized house. The huge living room and kitchen made the stay more comfortable. Would definitely recommend to large groups and families! The only downside was the midgies but they are unavoidable in this part of the world.

Big and nice house surrounded by nature

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this house during our holidays in Scotland. We visited Skye, Eilean Donan castle, the Loch Ness, and did some walks near the house. Everybody loved it. The house is very big, with plenty of room: we were a 9 people group, but the house can easily accommodate bigger groups. The heating worked perfectly, the rooms were nice and comfortable, more than enough bathrooms for everybody, and huge kitchen and living room.

The owner was very helpful, and gave us lots of information about activities. I would definitely recommend this house to big groups.

Other attractions include the nearby Falls of Glomach, Eilean Donan Castle, the Iron Age Brochs of Glenelg and, of course, the abundance of wildlife the area has to offer. Golden eagles, pine martens, seals, porpoises, otters, wild goats and red deer have all been spotted in the vicinity. There was even a whale in nearby Loch Duich once!
